JOB DESCRIPTION Title: Specialty Registrar in Paediatric Dentistry Directorate: Eastman Dental Hospital & Great Ormond Street Hospital Board/corporate function: Specialist Hospitals Responsible to: Clinical Lead Accountable to: Clinical Director Hours: 10 PA (40 hours per work) Location: Paediatric Dentistry UNVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), situated in the West End of London, is one of the largest NHS trusts in the United Kingdom and provides first class acute and specialist services both locally and to patients from throughout the UK and abroad. The new state-of-the-art University College Hospital which opened in 2005, is the focal point of the Trust alongside six cutting-edge specialist hospitals. UCLH was one of the first trusts to gain foundation status. The Trust has an international reputation and a tradition of innovation. Our excellence in research and development was recognised in December 2006 when it was announced that, in partnership with University College London (UCL), we would be one of the country’s five comprehensive biomedical research centres. The Trust is closely associated with University College London (UCL), a multi-faculty university. The Royal Free & University College Medical School (RFUCMS), which is one of the highest rated medical schools in the country, forms the largest element of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences (FBS), which was formed on 1st August 2006. FBS comprises the former Faculty of Clinical Sciences, four postgraduate Institutes (Ophthalmology, Neurology, Child Health, Eastman Dental) and the Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research. This structural change further enhances the exceptionally strong base of research and teaching in Biomedicine at UCL. Alongside our relationship with the world leading UCL and Royal Free medical school, we enjoy close links with London South Bank and City universities offering the very best in training and education. CLINICAL BOARD The Specialist Hospital Board (SCHB) incorporates 6 Specialist Hospitals which include The Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Obstetric Hospital (EGA), The Heart Hospital, The Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD), The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), The Royal London Homeopathic Hospital and The Eastman Dental Hospital lead by the Medical Director. The SCHB works closely with the Acute Hospitals Board which incorporates the specialties of Critical Care and Theatres, Outpatient and Imaging, Pathology, Emergency Services, Medicine and Therapies, Surgery, lead by their own Medical Director. DIVISION/DIRECTORATE/DEPT/WARD* The Eastman Dental Hospital aims to build on its own reputation for high quality patient care and clinical service as well as maintaining high quality education in line with the UCLH Trust objectives. The Directorate will develop into a ‘pioneering pathfinder’ healthcare institution with clinical quality, education and research at its core underpinned by innovation in all these areas. The aim is to foster and encourage, in line with the global Trust objectives, access to purpose designed specialist services which are integrated closely with those in the community to minimize travelling for patients, at the same time as developing other specialist services such that patients and families can benefit from changes driven as a result of audit, research and investment in the health service. The Eastman Dental Institute (EDI) is a postgraduate dental school forming part of University College London (UCL), and works closely in the furtherance of its mission with the Eastman Dental Hospital (EDH). EDI’s main activities are research and postgraduate education in the field of oral healthcare sciences. The Eastman Dental Institute and the Eastman Dental Hospital are jointly referred to as the Eastman. The Eastman operates as a single entity, with the clinical departments of the Hospital doubling as research and teaching departments for the Institute, thus ensuring the highest possible standard of evidence-based care for patients and the practical application of training for postgraduates. Together they are able to enhance the experience of those working and training at the forefront of clinical research and patient care. Last year approximately 80,000 patients were seen as outpatients in the Eastman Directorate. The Eastman Dental Hospital is situated in its own site on Grays Inn Road and interfaces very closely with the main Trust site and the other Specialist Hospitals. GREAT ORMOND STREET HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN NHS FOUNDATION TRUST Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. It aspires to offer outcomes for children in the top five in the world. the largest centre in the UK for children with heart or brain problems, and, with UCLH it is the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer. It is the only specialist Biomedical Research Centre for paediatrics, it works in partnership with the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), part of University College London, and together they form the largest paediatric research and teaching centre in the UK, and one of the largest in the world. The hospital at Great Ormond Street is the only exclusively specialist children's hospital in the UK. It does not have an Accident and Emergency department and largely only accepts specialist referrals from other hospitals and community services. The population of children served by the hospital is characterised by those with multiple disabilities and/or health problems and rare and congenital (present at birth) conditions. Many children need the help of different specialist teams. Improvements in health care and diagnosis mean that many children have dramatically improved survival rates and more therapeutic options than was the case 10 years ago. Sadly though, many of the children cared for at GOSH still have lifethreatening or life-limiting conditions. We have well over 192 828 admissions or outpatient appointments a year. Over 90 per cent of these are specialist services. This includes clinics we run around the country with our specialists going out to help local services. We have around 3,729 full time and part time hospital staff. The ICH has around 470 staff. Many senior staff have roles in both organisations. We have 318 open beds for all our services. 32 of these are intensive care beds 63 per cent of our specialist inpatients would count as intensive care or high dependency patients in another hospital, showing what heavy levels of nursing they require. The hospital website lists 55 clinical, diagnostic and support services. The Trust employs a total of 2,600 staff. The Interim Chief Executive is Mr Julian Nettel. The General Manager for Surgery is Ms Sarah Metson and the Divisional Director is Dr Elizabeth Jackson. THE MAXILLOFACIAL AND DENTAL DEPARTMENT 3.1 Aims and Objectives The Maxillofacial and Dental department at Great Ormond Street Hospital lies within the Clinical Unit of Surgery. The department provides maxillofacial surgery, orthodontic services, paediatric and restorative dentistry within the Trust. Over 5000 patients are seen annually as outpatients within the department. The inpatient workload is just under 300 episodes. The department has 3 operating lists per week shared between the specialties. A bid is in place to increase this to 4 sessions due to 18 week pathway pressures on Paediatric Dentistry. Beds are allocated on Peter Pan ward. There are also beds available on the Island Day Unit. 3.2 Present Staffing: Miss Caroline Mills Mr Norman Hay Mr Brijesh Patel Mr Robert Evans Mr Peter Ayliffe Miss Carol Mason Dr Susan Parekh Dr. Urshala Devalia Dr. Gehan Abou-Ameira Mr Simon Critchlow Mr Daljit Gill Specialty Lead and Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon 8 PA’s Consultant Orthodontist, 10 PA’s Consultant Orthodontist, 8 PA’s Consultant Orthodontist, 10 PA’s Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon 7 PA’s Consultant Paediatric Dentist, 7 sessions Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, 2 PA’s Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry 4 PA’s Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry 6 PA’s Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, 2 PA’s Consultant Orthodontist, 5 PA’s There are also; - 3 part-time technicians in a well-equipped laboratory. - 2 part-time dental hygienists. - 6 dental nurses - 2 receptionists. - 2 part-time secretaries.
