Parts of Speech in Brief
1. Noun: names a person, place, or thing, or idea
Common noun: any noun that does not name a specific person, place,
thing, or idea. Common nouns start with a lower case letter.
Proper noun: the name of a specific person, place, thing, or idea.
Proper nouns are capitalized.
2. Verb: conveys an action or state of being (existence)
An action verb tells what the subject is doing.
A linking verb connects the subject to a noun or adjective in the
predicate. Jill is a student. (links to noun) Jill is happy. (links to adjective)
Helping verbs help form some of the tenses of the main verb. They
are also called auxiliary verbs. Example: He was running.
3. Adjective: adds information about a noun or pronoun
The articles, a, an, and the are adjectives.
A proper adjective is formed from a proper noun, and is always
capitalized. Examples: Joe’s iguana, German chocolate is tasty.
A common adjective is any adjective that is not proper, and it is not
capitalized unless it is the first word in a sentence. Ex.: huge, yellow
4. Adverb: adds information about a verb, adjective, or another
adverb
The four basic types of adverbs show time, place, manner, and degree.
When? Where? How? How much? or How often?
5. Pronoun: takes the place (stands in for) a noun
The antecedent of a pronoun is the noun it is standing in for.
6. Preposition: tells you the relationship of something to
something else
A prepositional phrase includes the preposition, the object of the
preposition (a noun or pronoun) and any modifiers of the object.
7. Conjunction: a word that connects other words or groups of
words
The three types of conjunctions are coordinating (FAN BOYS),
correlative (either/or, etc), and subordinating (A WHITE BUS).
8. Interjection: a word or phrase used to express strong emotion
or surprise.
The interjection is set off from the rest of the sentence by a comma or
an exclamation mark.
