Modeling Chemical Reactions
Materials Needed:
12 Carbon atoms
6 Oxygen atoms
12 Hydrogen atoms
2 Nitrogen atoms
Directions:
1. Each colored ball represents an atom. Fill in the key below to show which color
represents each element:
N=
C=
H=
O=
2. Build the following:
2 molecules of Hydrogen Gas (H2)
2 molecules of Methane (CH4)
3 molecules of Oxygen gas (O2 )
3. React one H2 molecule with one O2 molecule by splitting the molecules and joining one
oxygen atom to two Hydrogen atoms. Because there is an unreacted oxygen atom, you
must react it with another oxygen molecule to form a second water molecule.
4. Summarize what happened in this reaction by filling in the number of each molecule
reacted or formed in front of its formula:
______ H2 + ______ O2
______ H20
Drawing of this Reaction
5. Now “react” Methane (CH4) with Oxygen (O2) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water
(H2O). Start with one molecule of methane and one molecule of oxygen. Continue
reacting molecules of CH4 and O2 until all of the reactant atoms have been used up to
form products. (You cannot have any atoms left over. They must all be used.)
6. Summarize what happened in this reaction by filling in the following:
_______ CH4 + ______ O2
_____ CO2 + _____ H2O
Drawing of this Reaction
7. Build the following
2 molecules of NO2
2 molecules of H2O
8. React all of your Nitrogen dioxide with all of your water to form as many molecules of
Nitric Acid (HNO3) as possible. Use the left over Hydrogen atoms to make Hydrogen
gas (H2).
9. Summarize your reaction in the following equation:
_____ NO2 + _____ H2O
______ HNO3 + _____ H2
Drawing of this Reaction
Questions:
1. Summarize Dalton’s atomic theory.
2. Compare the numbers and kinds of atoms to the left of the arrow to the numbers and
kinds of atoms to the right of the arrow, in each of the reactions you modeled. How does
this information support Dalton’s theory?
3. Bonus Question: If you had 6 molecules of water and an infinite supply of Carbon
dioxide, how many molecules of Glucose (C6H12O6) could you build? Explain.
