RemoteScan™
RemoteScan™ is a software solution that turns any TWAIN scanner, right out of the box, into a
network scanner. With RemoteScan™ ordinary or high-end scanners can now be shared with
other PCs or Thin Clients across your entire network. One scanner can now meet the needs of an
entire office.
RemoteScan™ for Windows Terminal® Services / Citrix®
Installed on an Application Server, RemoteScan™ allows users at workstations (PCs or Thin
Clients) to scan directly into software which is running on the server. RemoteScan™ is an easy
to install, easy to use solution that does not require sharing of folders or directories, and does not
compromise network security. Works with any TWAIN scanner and any application software,
installs in minutes and does not appreciably load network traffic.
RemoteScan is a trademark of RemoteScan Corporation.
Windows is a registered mark of Microsoft Corporation.
Citrix is a registered mark of Citrix Systems, Inc.

RemoteScan™ WHITE PAPER August 2004
Overview
RemoteScan™ is Windows® software which converts any TWAIN scanner (flatbed, sheet feeder, drum,
USB, Parallel, etc.) straight out of the box, into a network scanner. RemoteScan allows a single scanner
to be shared with other users over a network (IP, LAN, WAN), much in the same way as it is common to
share printers.
In addition with RemoteScan, scanners connected directly to client workstations can be accessed by any
application software which is running on Windows Terminal Services or Citrix servers. This is done
without any redirection or technical complexity; with RemoteScan Terminal Services / Citrix® users can
easily scan directly from their workstations without compromising network security in anyway and
without having to establish shared folders or directories.
RemoteScan installs on any PC running Windows (from Windows 98). RemoteScan also installs on Thin
Client appliances that are running XPe. RemoteScan, in any license configuration, has a very small foot
print (less than1 meg), and is provided as a self-installing download from the www.remote-scan.com web
site. Support is provided directly by RemoteScan Corporation through an online support forum, email,
and by phone during standard business hours.
Installing and using
To use, a copy of RemoteScan is installed on each computer or Thin Client appliance which has a scanner
directly attached. This allows the scanner to become a "shared scanner." RemoteScan is then installed on
the Windows Terminal Services / Citrix Server, and any other computer or Thin Client appliance where a
user needs to access the shared scanner.
For RemoteScan to function properly, it is necessary to first connect a TWAIN compatible scanner to a
PC or Thin Client appliance, and install the scanner driver provided by the scanner manufacturer.
RemoteScan will then access the manufacturer's driver and will become the user interface for the
installed scanner.
Features
Any number and combination of scanners can be shared on a network with RemoteScan. In a Windows
Terminal Services / Citrix environment this is especially advantageous since all application software on
the application server will "see" and then list individual scanners which are in fact located at remote
locations as if they were locally attached directly to the application server. This means that individual end
users can purchase and install a variety of scanners from different manufacturers on each of their own
workstations which then can be accessed by application software running on the Terminal Services /
Citrix server.

Features (continued)
RemoteScan supports all TWAIN compatible scanners, including high-end scanners which include such
features as sheet feeders and other advanced options.
RemoteScan uses highly efficient, lossless compression for transmitting data, and does not appreciably
slow down overall network traffic.
Since RemoteScan becomes the "front end" for the scanners which it accesses, RemoteScan provides user
configurable templates for pre-setting common scanner configuration options, such as DPI and color
settings. These templates are useful for large enterprises where administrators need to have users scan at a
consistent DPI/color settings.
RemoteScan uses native RDP and ICA protocols, which means that a scanner attached to a workstation
can be accessed by the Terminal Services or Citrix application software without changing firewall
configurations and without compromising network security. With RemoteScan you can also setup shared
scanning areas where one scanner is shared by any number of Terminal Server or Citrix clients.
Licensing
Licensing of the RemoteScan Terminal Services / Citrix product
A single license of RemoteScan Terminal Services / Citrix allows the installation of one copy of
RemoteScan on a single Terminal Services / Citrix application server, as well as installation on up to a
specified number of end-user computers which will be accessing the application server computer.
RemoteScan Terminal Services / Citrix licenses can be purchased in user increments of 10. Part numbers
for these licenses are REMOTESCAN-TS## where "##" is the required number of end users / client
machines where RemoteScan will be installed.
Licensing of the RemoteScan product for NON Terminal Services networks
A single license of RemoteScan allows the installation of one copy of RemoteScan on a single computer
where a scanner is physically attached, as well as installation on up to a specified number of end-user
computers which will be sharing that scanner. RemoteScan licenses can be purchased in user increments
of 10. Part numbers for these licenses are REMOTESCAN-RS## where "##" is the required number
of end users / client machines where RemoteScan will be installed.
