Monoterpenes
Oils That Have a Significant % of Monoterpenes:





Bergamot
Grapefruit
Lemon
Opopanax
Orange




Ravintsara
Rosemary ct camphor
Siberian Fir
Sweet Marjoram
Therapeutic Properties:
Monoterpenes are effective airborne deodorizers and purifiers. They are emotionally
uplifting and often provide an analgesic effect where muscle pain and stiffness are
present.
Safety Considerations:
Oils high in monoterpenes can cause skin irritation or sensitization if they have oxidized,
an important reason to store them well (cold and dark). Monoterpenes are not watersoluble; avoid in the bathtub unless they are well diluted in carrier oil or fatty substance
like milk.

Sesquiterpenes
Oils That Have a Significant % of Sesquiterpenes:




Geranium
German Chamomile
Helichrysum
Opoponax




Patchouli
Spikenard
Vetiver
Ylang Ylang
Therapeutic Properties:
With sesquiterpenes, the therapeutic effects of each component needs to be considered
individually, as one cannot generalize as easily as with the monoterpenes.

Monoterpenols
Oils That Have a Significant % of Monoterpenols:


Geranium
Lavender


Sweet Marjoram
Ylang Ylang
Therapeutic Properties:
Essential oils containing a significant percentage of alcohols are often effective antiinfectious agents; being antibacterial, antifungal and/or antiviral. They have the
advantage of being non-toxic, mild on the skin and mucous membranes. They are great
for long-term use.
Monoterpenols are great in skin care as they are generally safe and healing for the skin.
They act as a tonic for the nervous system, support emotional balance, and nourish and
strengthen the immune system.
Safety Considerations:
Most Monoterpenols are generally safe on the skin and are not known to be irritants.

Sesquiterpenols
Oils That Have a Significant % of Sesquiterpenols:


Patchouli
German Chamomile


Sandalwood
Vetiver
Therapeutic Properties:
The therapeutic properties of Sesquiterpenols are varied, as individual components have
unique effects.





Grounding- G. Chamomile, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Patchouli
Antispasmodic- Sandalwood, G.Chamomile
Antibacterial- G. Chamomile, Patchouli
Anti-inflammatory- Sandalwood, G. Chamomile, Patchouli
Immune stimulant- Vetiver, Sandalwood
Safety Considerations:
Sesquiterpenols are generally safe oils and are not known to be irritants.
48
Aldehydes
Oils That Have a Significant % of Aldehydes:

Lemongrass
Therapeutic Properties:
Generally, essential oils containing a significant percentage of aldehydes have sedative,
anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and anti-infectious properties. They are great
antifungal agents. Aldehydes can also be tonifying to the nervous system, temperature
reducing and cooling.
Safety Considerations:
Oils with a significant aldehyde content can be irritating to the skin and mucus
membranes. Low concentrations of aldehydes in blends are generally safe for the skin
(suggested use at 1%).
49
Ketones
Oils That Have a Significant % of Ketones:
 Rosemary ct
camphor
Therapeutic Properties:
Essential oils containing a significant percentage of Ketones are valuable in respiratory
infections such as colds and flu, as they are highly effective mucolytics and can also act
as expectorants. Ketones are also analgesic.
Safety Considerations:
All Ketones do not have the same safety concerns. The following are non-toxic Ketone
compounds: menthone, verbenone, vetivone, verbenone, fenchone, carvone, pipertone,
and jasmone.
The Camphor content in Rosemary ct camphor could be concerning, therefore it would be
wise to avoid using it with children, those who are epileptic, pregnant or have a high
fever. Use all oils that contain camphor for short periods of time and in small amounts.

Esters
Oils That Have a Significant % of Esters:




Bergamot
Geranium
Helichrysum
Lavender



Roman Chamomile
Siberian Fir
Ylang Ylang
Therapeutic Properties:
Many essential oils containing a significant percentage of esters are antispasmodic
(ranging from a gentle antispasmodic action to a powerful one, depending on the oil).
Esters tend to be sedative, balancing, analgesic and soothing. Some ester rich oils are
good digestive aids, many are anti-inflammatory, and most are effective on skin rashes
and skin irritations. They are known as the balancing components.
Safety Considerations:
Bergamot is phototoxic, but esters rich oils are generally safe oils.
51
Oxides
Oils That Have a Significant % of Oxides:


Eucalyptus (globulus)
German Chamomile

Ravintsara
Therapeutic Properties:
Essential oils containing significant amounts of 1, 8 cineole have antiviral and mucolytic
effects. They can be very powerful aids in any respiratory illness. Some oxide rich oils
are anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic. They also tend to be analgesics.
Oxide rich oils also have a stimulating effect on the mental process, increasing cerebral
blood flow to the brain when inhaled.
Safety Considerations:
Care must be taken with using oils containing1, 8 cineole with asthmatics, as it is
possible to set off an attack. This is an individual response to the oil, dose, application
and specific situation. Do not use with infants. If oxidized can cause skin irritation and
sensitization.
