How to remember the Brachial Plexus: YOU YOUNG MERMAIDS LINE UP IN FRONT OF MY ULTRA TRIDENT Draw the plexus first using the story: Poseidon called all the mermaids around and said “You Young Mermaids, Line Up in front of my ULTRA Trident” Once they had amassed he then yelled out “Robert Taylor Drinks Cold Beer” YOU YOUNG Poseidon’s ULTRA TRIDENT MERMAIDS (ULTRA (NOTE UTLRA in reality)) LINE UP in front of add 5 lines on top, 3 lines on bottom So now we have two things left to do- Label the regions and divisions and of course the names of the nerves (see next page). NOTE*** Story goes ULTRA Trident, but the spelling will be UTLRA. So the UTLRA Trident is as follows: U= Upper Subscapular Nerve T= Thoracodorsal Nerve L=Lower Subscapular Nerve R= Radial Nerve A = Axillary Nerve ULTRA Trident is BEHIND THE PLEXUS, thus forming the POSTERIOR Division of the Brachial Plexus. So now you have drawn the Brachial Plexus, use “Robert Taylor Drinks Cold Beer” which gives us… Roots, Trunks, Divisions, Cords, and Branches * For the DIVISIONS: note that the initial nemonic has …..Line Up IN FRONT of Poseidon’s ULTRA trident……. So just like the story, the ULTRA Trident is BEHIND THE PLEXUS, thus forming the POSTERIOR Division of the Brachial Plexus. Story for all the nerve names that come off the Brachial Plexus: So all the mermaids went and decided to get high, but getting high: Nemonic is: LSD SALT Made Many Mermaids Undergo Mass Misery Starting off with the 6 branches that you added on top they are LSD SALT The 3 branches that you added on the bottom are Made Many Mermaids (MMM) The three Anterior branches Undergo Mass Misery (UMM) L=Lateral Pectoral Nerve S= Suprascapular Nerve D= Dorsal Scapular Nerve S= Nerve to the Subclavius A=Accessory Phrenic LT=Long Thoracic M=Medial Pectoral Nerve M=Medial Brachial Cutaneous Nerve M=Medial Antebrachial Cutaneous Nerve U=Ulnar Nerve M=Median Nerve M=Musculocutaneous Nerve *****FLIP PICTURE ON SIDE TO GET BELOW***** LSD SALT MMM UMM U = Upper Subscapular T= Thoracodorsal L= Lower Subscapular R=Radial A=Axillary L= Lateral Pectoral S= Suprascapular D= Dorsal Scapular S= Nerve to the Subclavius A=Accessory Phrenic LT=Long Thoracic M=Medial Pectoral M=Medial Brachial Cutaneous M=Medial Antebrachial Cutaneous U= Ulnar M= Median M= Musculocutaneous Nerve Upper subscapular nerve Lower subscapular nerve Thoracodorsal nerve Radial nerve Axillary nerve Lateral pectoral nerve Suprascapular nerve Dorsal scapular nerve Nerve to subclavius Accessory phrenic nerve Long Thoracic Nerve Medial pectoral nerve Medial brachial cutaneous nerve Medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve Ulnar nerve Innervation Subscapularis muscle Subscapularis muscle and teres major muscles Latissimus dorsi muscle Muscles of the posterior brachial and antebrachial compartments (13 muscles) Deltoid and teres minor Pectoralis major Infraspinatus and supraspinatus muscles Levator scapulae, rhomboideus major and minor muscles Subclavius muscle Diaphragm Serratus Anterior Muscle Pectoralis major and minor muscles Skin of the medial side of the brachium Skin of the medial side of the antebrachium Anterior Antebrachium - The flexor carpi ulnaris and the ulnar half of the flexor digitorum profundus Hand Muscles - All muscles of the hand not innervated by the median nerve - the adductor pollicis muscles, the hypothenar muscles, the 3rd and 4th lumbrcals, the palmar interossei, and the dorsal interossei Median nerve Anterior Antebrachium - All of the anterior compartment muscles of the antebrachium except the flexor carpi ulnaris and the ulnar half of the flexor digitorum profundus Hand Muscles - 1/2 LOAF – Intrinsic Hand Muscles Musculocutaneous nerve Muscles of the anterior brachial compartment So how do we know which nerves go to which muscles in the Antebrachium and Hand? Remember: ½ LOAF ALL ANT COMP. OF ANTEBRACHIUM & RADIAL ½ OF FLEXOR DIGITORUM PROFUNDUS Antebrachium THE 1 & ½ EXCEPTIONS FLEXOR CARPI ULNARIS ULNAR ½ OF FLEXOR DIGITORUM PROFUNDUS 1 ½ muscles 6 ½ muscles Median Nerve 1st & 2nd Lumbricals Opponens Pollicus Abductor Pollicus Brevis Flexor Pollicus Brevis 1/2 LOAF Ulnar Nerve Hand ALL THE REST OF MUSCLES OF THE HAND NOT INNERVATED BY THE MEDIAN NERVE SO…. 1. YOU YOUNG MERMAIDS LINE UP IN FRONT OF MY UTLRA TRIDENT 2. ROBERT TAYLOR DRINKS COLD BEER 3. LSD SALT MADE MANY MERMAIDS UNDERGO MASS MISERY 4. ½ LOAF This is adapted from my previous anatomy teacher’s methods for learning the brachial plexus and arm innervations.
