Post-Doctoral Position in 3D integrated geothermal modelling of Ireland’s crust. The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), in partnership with the Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Researcher position. The position is within the framework of the Irish Research Council funded project G.O.THERM.3D, aimed at developing a robust and unique model of temperature within Ireland's crust and to produce a 3D temperature atlas of the country using existing geothermal data together with other geophysical, geological and petrological data sets. A fundamental goal of the project is to increase public awareness of geothermal energy, focusing and encouraging geothermal resource exploration and assisting in the development of public policy on geothermal energy exploration, mapping, planning and exploitation. The candidate will join the recently established, growing group of integrated geophysicalpetrological modelling in DIAS. The research will be in close collaboration with the Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). The position is funded for 18 months. Specific information on the positions is given below. The starting date for the position is March 1, 2017, or as soon as possible after that (flexible). The starting salary will be €35,489 per year plus benefits. Consideration of applications will begin on February 1st and continue until the position is filled. Potential candidates should send a cover letter outlining their research interests, motivation and suitability, a full CV and contact details of three referees via email to Dr Javier Fullea ([email protected]) using the subject line “G.O.THERM3D”. For additional information on the project or working at DIAS please contact Javier Fullea. DIAS is an Equal Opportunities Employer. Post-Doctoral researcher: 3D integrated geothermal modelling of Ireland’s crust. Salary 35,489 EUR Duration: (18 months) A position for an Earth scientist with expertise in thermal modelling and imaging of the crust using geophysical data (e.g. magnetotellurics, gravity, seismic) and a solid background in geology. Familiarity with the Irish geological setting, geothermal energy context, and available petrophysical data sets (i.e., thermal conductivity, heat production), as well as experience in integrated geophysical-petrological modelling are required. Ability to handle GIS software and programming skills will be considered an advantage. The successful candidate will develop a 3D temperature model of Ireland's crust. The modelling will be carried out based on an integrated geophysical-petrological approach that simultaneously accounts for multiple geophysical (heat-flow, gravity, topography, magnetotelluric, seismic) and petrological (thermal conductivity, heat-production, xenolith composition) datasets, where the main rock properties (density, electrical resistivity, seismic velocity) are thermodynamically computed based on the temperature and bulk rock composition. Specifically, the candidate will adapt existing tools in the group to focus on the shallower structures that comprise the Irish crust, to depths of ~ 30 km. Collaboration with GSI, SEAI and other DIAS group members working on the Irish and North Atlantic lithospheric structure is expected and therefore teamwork ability is required. The successful candidate will also assist in establishing new collaborations to integrate the project into the broader geothermal research community. A key element of the position is to present the outputs of the project in a way that is accessible to the public and to policy makers, as well as to the scientific community and to industry. Therefore, an ability to communicate the project's goals, methodology and results at national conferences, seminars and trade shows, and at other relevant outreach activities, would be favourable. Qualifications: - Applicants must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree within Tectonics/Geodynamics/Geophysics. - Evidence of the ability to present and publish the result of research at national (Irish) and international level and documented research potential. - Ability to conduct independent research. - Proficiency in both written and oral English.
