TIME MACHINE SCRIPT
Narrator: Hello, everyone. You are going to watch a short report on the history of Athens.
These are our reporters, Sarah and Oliver, who are going to transfer you to another era
travelling by our Time Machine.
Sarah: Hello. My name is Sarah and I have been working as a reporter for many years.
Oliver: Hi. I am Oliver and I am a very experienced reporter, too. Sarah and I are going to
give you a lot of information on the famous city of Athens.
Narrator: This is our Time machine! Are you ready? Please, close your eyes and don’t
open them until I tell you to do so.
Narrator: Let’s go!
Narrator: Here we are. Now open your eyes!
Sarah: Wow!
Oliver: This is the Mythological Period of Athens.
Sarah: Athena, the goddess of wisdom, is the protector of the city.
Oliver: According to Greek mythology, Athena competed with Poseidon, the god of the
sea, in order to be the patron deity of Athens, which back then was unnamed.
Sarah: They agreed to give a gift to the citizens and the citizens would choose the gift
they preferred. Athena gave them an olive tree and they named the city after her.
Oliver: Oh, look there she is. Let’s go and talk to her.
Sarah: Athena…! Hello, we are reporters from the year 2017.
Athena: 2017?
Sarah: Could you tell us some things about you?
Athena: Of course. What would you like to know?
[1]
Oliver: Please, could you tell us about the owl on your shoulder?
Athena: The wise owl reveals truths to me. It illuminates “the blind side” of my thoughts
and it allows me to see the true reality beyond deceit.
Sarah: Very impressive!
Athena: I must always be fair to my citizens and help them.
Sarah: After all, you are the goddess of knowledge and wisdom.
Athena: Of course. The citizens have built the Parthenon on the Acropolis for me.
Oliver: Thank you very much.
Narrator: After our encounter with Athena, the reporters will be transferred in another
era. Are you all ready? So, close your eyes. Let’s go.
We are in the 5th century B.C.
Sarah: Is this the Golden Age of Athens?
Oliver: Exactly.The Age of Pericles.
Sarah: That’s when the Parthenon was constructed in order to house the new statue of
Athena.
Oliver: Wait a minute! Aren’t they Ictinus and Callicrates, the architects of the
Parthenon?
Sarah: Excuse me, could you tell us some things about the construction of the famous
monument?
Callicrates: Who are you?
Oliver: We are reporters from the future and I can assure you that the Parthenon is
going be one of the world’s greatest monuments ever!
Ictinus: Really? Mmmm! Well, it measures 300 by 150 meters and it is 70 meters
high. It sits on the highest part of the Acropolis.
Callicrates: We have used Pentelic Marble, which is known for its pure white appearance,
from the nearby Mt. Pentelicus.
[2]
Sarah: It’s so shiny!!!
Ictinus: Its construction begun in 447 B.C and it was completed in 438 B.C.
Callicrates: It’s also a symbol of the Athenian Democracy …
Ictinus: …and an enduring symbol of ancient Greece.
Sarah: Thank you.
Oliver: It was an honor talking to you.
Sarah: It is really the finest example of Greek Architecture.
Oliver: Yes, you are right.
Narrator: The two reporters were very happy for meeting those important people and very
impressed by the great monument. They go back to the Time Machine and get ready to
travel in 2017. Thank you for joining us!!!
