ABC – HEALTH RECORDS ACCESS BOOKING AND CHOICE*
The Access, Booking and Choice (ABC) Directorate has a number of functions which
include the following

 Health Records
 Reception services
ACTIVE CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICE*
The Active Case Management Service aims to reduce unplanned unnecessary
admissions and length of stay for patients with complex health and social care needs.
This involves coordinating care at times of transition and responding in a timely
manner when patients on the caseload are experiencing a health or social crisis.
ADULT SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY
The Assessment and treatment of speech and swallowing disorders including voice
and fluency. Swallowing assessments may include the need for diagnostic tests such
as videofluroscopy. Speech and Language Therapists are the lead experts regarding
communication and swallowing disorders.
ANTICOAGULANT SERVICE
The Anticoagulant Service is provided in the community and at Salford Royal to
Adults who require anticoagulation treatment. The Anticoagulation Team is a nurse
led multi-disciplinary team which provides support, education, and management to
Salford patients who require anticoagulant therapy or advice.
AUDIOLOGY SERVICE
The Audiology Service is provided to adults and children presenting with hearing
loss, tinnitus and balance disorders. The service provides assessment, rehabilitation,
counselling and practical advice to ensure adults and children with hearing loss,
tinnitus/balance disorders are able to live, access education, and work to their
maximum ability with an improved quality of life in their work and social spheres.
BLADDER & BOWEL SERVICE (formerly CONTINENCE ADVISORY SERVICE)*
This service provides a specialist clinical nursing service and a professional advisory
service to the patients registered with a Salford GP. In addition it provides advice and
support to social care agencies, voluntary and the private sector within the City of
Salford.
CARDIAC REHABILITATION SERVICE*
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Service provides a City-wide, evidenced based,
individualised approach to support patients and their families/carers who have had a
cardiac event in the previous 12 months.
CARDIOLOGY MEDICINE*
The Department of Cardiology Medicine Salford provides a comprehensive DGH
cardiology service having subspecialty interest in intervention, devices, imaging and

heart failure. The Department has a variety of subspecialty interests which enhances
the care of patients with heart disease in Salford including: On-site nuclear
myocardial imaging service, Cardio-respiratory investigation department, DSE
service, Rapid Access Chest Pain clinics, New On Set Chest Pain Service, Heart
Failure Service. The department is supported by a full range of non-cardiology
medical and surgical services.
CARDIO RESPIRATORY*
This department provides invasive and non invasive investigations for cardiology and
respiratory patients.
CARE OF THE ELDERLY*
The Care of the Elderly Department has a variety of subspecialty interests including,
falls orthogeriatric liaison, Parkinson’s disease, syncope and epilepsy in older adults
and delivers high quality services in acute Geriatric Medicine for Salford patients.
The acute service is managed across four wards by four Consultant Geriatricians.
Services are supported by nursing staff trained in the managing older people and
multidisciplinary teams. Mental Health Liaison support is provided by a Consultant
Psychiatrist. Further support in the form of strong leadership is provided by an
experienced Safeguarding Adults team.
CAST TEAM*
The CAST team provides a number of interrelated functions to address both the
chronic and acute needs of the patient. Prevention of admission with referrals taken
from primary or secondary care. Early supported discharge providing a proven, safe
and effective alternative to continuing hospital based care. Patients can be cared for
at home for up to 14 days.
CHILDREN’S COMMUNITY NURSING SERVICES
Children’s Community Nursing Services are committed to working with partners and
recognises the inter-dependence between a number of agencies created by the
needs of some children and their families/ carers. Children’s Community Nursing
Services have been developed to ensure a quality approach to the right care, in the
right place, at the right time is delivered. These services focus upon the promotion of
health and the prevention of disease.
COMMUNITY DENTAL SERVICE*
The service provides specialised dental services to people living in Salford with
complex needs who are unable to use general dental services; teaching for dentists
and dental undergraduates; assessments for general anaesthetic and treatment
using Inhalation Sedation.
COMMUNITY HEART FAILURE SERVICE*
The Community Heart failure Service provides high quality localised care for patients
diagnosed with left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) or severe inoperable
(mitral or aortic) heart valve disease. The service is delivered in community based
clinics or through home visits for patients with advanced heart failure symptoms and
inoperable heart valve disease.

COMMUNITY NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION*
The Community Neurological Rehabilitation Team (CNRT) offers specialist
multidisciplinary services for people with neurological conditions. The team provides
appropriate assessment treatment, maintenance, support and advice for people living
in the community and referral to other agencies as required.
COMMUNITY PAEDIATRIC SERVICE
The Community Paediatric Service is an outpatient service for children delivered by
the community paediatric consultant team. Specialist outpatient clinics include;
assessments of children referred because of concerns about developmental or
educational progress; clinics for vulnerable children and those in special
circumstances; general paediatric clinics in local settings and enuresis clinics.
COMMUNITY REHABABILITATION & SUPPORTED DISCHARGE TEAMS*
Community Rehabilitation Team
The service provides rehabilitation to people within their own homes in order to
maintain independence and prevent premature admission to long-term care. The
team accepts referrals from Primary care and Community to provide assessment,
therapeutic intervention and advice to service users and their carers.
Supported Discharge Team
The service provides rehabilitation to people within their own homes, supporting
discharge from hospital in order to improve and maintain independence. The Team
provides assessment, therapeutic intervention and advice to service users and their
carers.
CONTACT SERVICE CENTRE
Centrally manages the initial processes when a patient is referred into Outpatients at
Salford Royal Hospital. We ensure that all patients are accurately entered onto the
PAS system, checking all patient demographics are present and up to date. We
facilitate each referral in getting it triaged by the clinical teams and booking the
patients into their outpatient appointments appropriately within local and national
target times. We manage all call flows into the trust in regards to appointments,
cancel and rebooking and also appointment queries patients may have. The Call
Centre function also ensures all appointment requests are actions from wards, and
other clinical / service areas within the trust. All template requests are received and
auctioned within the ABC function, where they will be cancelled, added, amended,
and all booked patients rebooked to appropriate clinics
DERMATOLOGY*
The Dermatology Centre at Salford Royal offers a full range of dermatology services
and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Our specialist services include:
Phototherapy, Dermatological Surgery, Laser surgery, Mohs' Surgery, The Psoriasis
Clinic, Paediatric Dermatology, Allergy Testing, and Skin cancer clinics.
The Dermatology Centre is involved in the development of dermatology services
across Greater Manchester and our Consultant body and Nurse Specialists
provide general dermatology services as well as specialist outpatient and inpatient
services. The centre is recognised as having one of the top dermatology clinical and

basic research programmes in Europe and has strong academic links to Manchester
University and the Christie Hospital.
DIABETES AND ENDOCRINOLOGY*
The Diabetes and Endocrinology Department has 8 NHS/Academic Consultant
colleagues, 3 Specialist Registrar’s, 2 Endocrinology Specialist Nurses and a team of
Diabetic Specialist Nurses. The Clinical Directorate provides high quality MDT care,
busy outpatient department and inpatient specialty beds. In addition to Diabetes and
Endocrinology the Clinical department provides more specialist services such as
Obesity, Medical Weight Management and Chronic Fatigue.
DIABETES SERVICE*
The Diabetes Service provides a highly specialist level of education, assessment,
treatment and management for children and adults with type 1 diabetes, type 2
diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance who are registered with a Salford General
Practitioner and a number of out of area patients. All facets of the service are
focused on developing and supporting patients with the principles of selfmanagement.
DIETETICS
The Assessment, advice, treatment and ongoing management of clinical nutrition
(enteral and parenteral nutrition) in acute and chronic disease states, this will include
elements of measurement (weight, height etc). Service are provide to inpatients as
well as clinic settings and within the patients home.
DISCHARGE ASSESSMENT TEAM (IC)*
The Discharge Assessment Service supports the safe discharge of patients who
require community care; this can be direct to the patients own home with District
Nursing or carers support, twenty-four hour care, or to a residential/nursing home for
assessment and ongoing rehabilitation.
DISTRICT NURSING SERVICE*
District Nurses provide a domiciliary service for housebound adults over the age of
18 years with a physical health care need. The service promotes healthier lifestyles,
physical, psychological and social well being, and supports and encourages people
with disability and long-term conditions to live independent lives. Treatment is also
provided in clinic settings for patients that are able to attend.
EAR NOSE & THROAT
The ENT directorate has seven consultant surgeons. Subspecialty interests include,
head and neck oncology, otology, BAHA, cochlear implants, rhinology and paediatric
ENT. The majority of elective work takes place through the day case unit with
inpatients being cared for on ward A3. Outpatient services take place in the ENT
clinic area and are supported by specialist nurses. Paediatric ENT clinics take place
at Pendleton gateway with clinical input from SRFT surgeons. A paediatric theatre list
also takes place at SRFT.

EMERGENCY*
The Emergency Department provides treatment for around 85,000 patients a year.
The department offers specialist trauma and emergency medical care for all forms of
serious injury and illness. The team within the Emergency Department work closely
with the inpatient and community teams to ensure high quality, evidence based care
for all. There is a specialist Emergency Nurse Practitioner service for minor injury,
and a dedicated physiotherapy clinic based within the department.
The Emergency Department runs a dedicated short stay ward for patients requiring
up to 24 hours of inpatient assessment and treatment.
EMERGENCY ASSESSMENT UNIT*
The Emergency Assessment Unit functions to provide early assessment and
treatment to adult patients, who are referred by their general practitioner or by the
Accident and Emergency department. The service is divided into an Ambulatory Care
Area (AAA) with the goal of providing medical assessment, treatment and follow up
without the need for hospital admission; the main ward where patients with more
complex needs are initially assessed and treated. The AAA is designed to provide
high quality patient outcome, good patient experience and save costs by avoiding
unnecessary admissions. To allow this to work EAU also has a Virtual ward and EAU
clinics to facilitate early follow up and appropriate investigations, for example patients
with deep vein thrombosis. The ward area is designed to accommodate more unwell
medical patients whose illness requires a multidisciplinary approach and
physiological observations to detect deterioration while their illness is being
diagnosed or treated. EAU has 6 cardiac monitors available to help with observation.
An example of patients who require close observation and a MDT approach are
patients with acute delirium.
ENHANCED RAPID RESPONSE TEAM INCLUDING SINGLE POINT OF ENTRY
(IC)*
The Enhanced Rapid Response Team prevents unnecessary hospital admission by
providing a multi-disciplinary team service for those experiencing an acute episode of
illness or injury and in a health and/or social care crisis. Assessments take place
either in the patient’s own home or within the hospital.
FALLS SERVICE*
The Salford Falls Service is aimed at reducing the incidence and impact of falls,
particularly among the older population who are most vulnerable to falls and injurious
consequences.
GASTROENTEROLOGY
The Gastroenterology Department has 9 NHS/Academic Consultant colleagues and
3 Specialist Registrars and a multidisciplinary support team consists of 2 Specialist
IBD nurses, 1 Cancer Nurse Specialist and 2 Alcohol Specialist Nurses.
The Clinical Directorate prides itself on the delivery of high quality multidisciplinary
care, and the busy outpatient department is supported by inpatient specialty beds
with dedicated ward staff. In addition to General Gastroenterology and Chronic
Disease management the Clinical department also acts as a tertiary referral centre
for patients with problematic crohns, liver disease, gut motility hepatitis, neuropathic
pain and IF.

GP OUT OF HOURS SERVICE
The GP Out of Hours Service provides the GP registered population of Salford with
a comprehensive service when their own GP practice is closed. Calls to the
service are triaged and patients are given advice on self care, asked to attend.
GYNAECOLOGY*
The Gynaecology Service provides assessment, diagnosis and treatment of
gynaecological conditions including sub-speciality expertise in fertility,
urogynaecology, colposcopy and hysteroscopy, post-menopausal bleeding,
termination of pregnancy and gynaecological oncology.
HEALTH FOR LIFE
The Health for Life Team delivers targeted health promotion activities that include
screening, lifestyle advice and education.
HEALTH RECORDS*
The Health Records team ensure that records are:
 Provided for all Outpatient clinics and emergency admissions
 Provided for legal, research and audit purposes
 Duplicate registrations are merged to create one record per patient
 Provide case notes to secretariat on request
 Release and photocopying of health records when requested from other
healthcare providers
 Respond to telephone and other enquiries from patients and service users
HEALTH VISITING SERVICE
The Health Visiting Service promotes healthier lifestyles, physical, psychological and
social well being, for families with young children under the age of five who are
registered with Salford General Practitioners. It provides a preventative service to
address inequalities of health as a core principle. It offers a universal service with
additional interventions on targeted areas in particular to safeguarding and children in
need.
HOME OXYGEN THERAPY SERVICE*
The home oxygen therapy service is to review any patient who has been issued
home oxygen at least annually to ensure that they meet the criteria for their needs
and that is safe and cost effective. During their annual review patients will have their
lung function recorded and their treatment optimised.
INTERMEDIATE CARE BEDDED UNITS (IC)*
This Intermediate Care Bedded Units provide in-patient nursing, rehabilitation and
assessment in order to prevent an unnecessary hospital admission or promote early
discharge from hospital, and prevent premature admission to long term care.

INTERMEDIATE CARE SOCIAL WORK TEAM (IC)*
The Intermediate Social Work Team assesses the needs of any adult over 18 years
who requires a social work assessment and have current involvement from
intermediate care services. The Social Workers will also assess the needs of carers
where the cared for person is known to intermediate care services.
INTERMEDIATE HOME CARE AND ENABLEMENT SERVICE (IC)*
The Intermediate Home Care and Enablement Service provides short term free
domiciliary care. The service offers assessments to identify long term care needs and
the most efficient means of delivery. The service works closely with Allied Health
Professionals to enable service users to maximise their independence.
IV SERVICE (IC)*
The IV service is a joint service between Primary and Secondary Care which
provides patients, requiring over 7 days of intravenous antibiotic therapy, the option
to have their treatment in the community.
MEDICAL PHYSICS
The department supports users of medical equipment, and those involved in R&D
work when medical equipment is required. Support includes general advice,
equipment trials and evaluations, procurement, servicing and repair, manufacture of
prototype equipment, clinical information systems and regulatory issues. Outside
involvement includes working with medical equipment suppliers, compliance with
NHSLA and CQC requirements.
MUSCULOSKELETAL CLINICAL ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT SERVICE
(MSK CATS)*
The Musculoskeletal Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service is a one-stopshop
for all patients with musculoskeletal problems which may include disorders of
the bone, joints, soft tissues, muscles or ligaments.
NEONATES
The Neonatal Unit cares for both Level 2 and Level 3 babies. The Unit accepts
referrals from across the North West as it is currently only one of two units in the
region. The Unit will close on the 18th November under the MIB reorganisation of
services.
NEPHROLOGY
The Nephrology department is the inpatient centre for the West Sector of Greater
Manchester and provides the following specialist renal centre functions:





Management, communication and co-ordination of the Renal Managed

Training and tuition for both Centre and Linked DGH staff
Inpatient Nephrology
Renal High Dependency for the treatment of acute renal failure

Local haemodialysis provided for the local population

Specialist Outpatients
Pre-and post-transplant management (post after three months)
The Renal department at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust comprises:




Two renal wards – currently 37 beds
Three-bedded renal high dependency care unit adjacent to the renal wards
Maintenance haemodialysis unit of 29 stations
Home haemodialysis training unit and self-care unit of 2 stations
The support services for investigation and management of renal disease include full
radiological facility (ultrasound, CT, MR scanning, isotope imaging and interventional
radiology) and renal pathology. A close working relationship exists with the urological
services. Vascular access is provided by the renal transplant team from Central
Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals Trust.

NEURO SURGERY
The Department of Neurosurgery is part of The Greater Manchester Neurosciences
Centre. The adult neurosurgical service is based at Salford Royal Hospital and the
paediatric neurosurgical service at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital,
Manchester. The adult neurosurgical service provides a comprehensive range of
neurosurgical services, which include:
 Access to a 22 bedded intensive care unit
 A dedicated 10 bedded neurosurgical high dependency unit
 68 standard care beds across 3 neurosurgical wards
 Access to a neuroscience diagnostic unit
 3 dedicated neurosurgical theatres
 Access to a 24 hour emergency theatre
 Access to day surgery theatres for local anaesthetic procedures
 A separate theatre suite for interventional neuro-radiological procedures
 Access to an extensive range of radiology facilities ]

The adult neurosurgical service at Salford Royal Hospital operates an upfront
scanning process for all outpatient referrals. By where patients referral letters are be
reviewed by a consultant who then decides whether it is necessary for the patient to
attend a radiological scan prior to being seen in clinic. If patients have already had a
scan at either at Salford Royal or elsewhere these images will also be obtained prior
to their clinic appointment. This is to ensure that clinician has as much clinical
information as possible at the patient’s first attendance, which enables a decision
regarding treatment to be made quicker and reduces the number of follow-up
appointments that the patient will require.
As well as providing general neurosurgical clinics the Department of Neurosurgery
also offers specialised services, which consist of the following:
 Skull Base
 Neuro-oncology
 Neurovascular
 Spinal
 Epilepsy
 Functional
 Pituitary
 Trauma
 Pain Relief
The Department of Neurosurgery also provides Multidisciplinary team meetings in
many of the specialised areas including, Skull Base, Neuro-oncology, Neurovascular,
Spinal, Epilepsy, Functional, Pituitary and Pain. In addition to this the Department of
Neurosurgery offers a 24 hour on-call service across Greater Manchester, as well as
out reach clinics at the following sites:

This department provides invasive and non invasive investigations for cardiology and
respiratory patients.
NEWBORN HEARING SCREENING SERVICE
Newborn Hearing Screening automatically offers all parents the opportunity to have
their baby’s hearing tested shortly after birth to identify deafness and hearing
impairment in newborn babies.
OBSTETRICS
The Obstetric service provides both consultant and midwifery led care. The antenatal
clinic at SRFT also provides more specialist input such as Diabetes and Renal. The
community led service includes acqua-natal, acupuncture and baby massage. The
facilities on site include a Birth Centre for midwifery-led patients and a Consultant
Delivery Unit for the more complex births. The Unit will close on the 18th November
under the MIB reorganisation of services.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY*
This service offers:
Assessments of activities of daily living and cognition.
Rehabilitation programmes to promote independence
Provision of small aids and adaptations
Ordering equipment and home adaptatons to facilitate timely discharge.
Splinting and bracing procedures.
ORTHOPTICS SERVICE
The Orthoptics Service provides assessment diagnosis and management of ocular
motility disorders and visual impairment. The orthoptist is also involved in screening
for visual defects in children.
ORTHOTICS*
The orthotic service offers assessment, diagnosis, provision, fitting, supply and
review of all types of bodily worn devices, known as orthoses to improve function and
promote independence. These devices can include helmets, collars, corsets, braces,
splints, callipers, insoles and footwear. Some manufacturing and modification of
orthoses is required and undertaken in a workshop area.
OSTEOPOROSIS*
The Osteoporosis service provides screening, assessment, investigation, diagnosis
and management for patients who are at risk of osteoporosis, osteopaenia and poor
bone health, with or without fracture in a variety of settings
PAEDIATRIC ASTHMA SERVICE
The Paediatric Asthma Service focuses on asthma as a Public Health issue, and
that education of both the general public, healthcare professionals, and all those who
work with children in all settings is paramount to ensure a well co-ordinated approach
to its management.
PAEDIATRIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICE
Paediatric Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy is a city wide service and is
available to all children and young people 0-16 years (0-19 in full time education or
special school) who are registered with a Salford GP or who live in Salford. The

PAEDIATRIC SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPIES SERVICE
The Paediatric Speech and Language Therapies Service assesses speech,
language, communication and feeding needs of children and provides a range of
interventions to address the identified needs of children, families and others who
work with children. The service is high quality, evidence based and cost effective.
Working in partnership with children, young people, parents/carers and colleagues,
the service meets their speech, language, communication and feeding needs in a
range of environments.

PAIN MANAGEMENT*
The Manchester & Salford Pain Centre (MSPC) are an integrated clinical team of
doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists and nurses who are expert at managing all
forms of pain. The centre offers an extensive range of services to the population of
Greater Manchester, which include specialised outpatient clinics, pain relief
injections, pain management programmes (at both foundation and intensive levels),
spinal cord stimulators and intrathecal baclofen pump refills.
The Pain Management Programme (PMP) that the MSPC provides is a rehabilitative
programme based upon psychological (cognitive-behavioural) principles, and selfmanagement for people whose lives are adversely affected by chronic pain. The
overall aim of a PMP is to reduce the disability and distress caused by chronic pain,
by teaching sufferers physical, psychological and practical techniques to improve
quality of life.
The Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) service that the MSPC provides involves
stimulating nerves within the spinal cord for the management of patients with chronic
nerve pain.(Neuropathic pain) It is suitable in selected patients who have pain
following back surgery or ‘Complex Regional Pain Syndrome’.
The Manchester & Salford Pain Centre operate a triage system by where patients are
sent a pain management questionnaire on receipt of their referral letter. This must
be completed and returned to the pain centre within 2 weeks. Once the
questionnaire is received the information is uploaded onto an electronic scoring
system. These pain scores are then reviewed by the multi-disciplinary team and a
collective decision is made as to which clinic is the most appropriate for the patient to
be seen in. The specialist clinics that the Manchester & Salford Pain Centre provide

Manchester & Salford Pain Centre specialist nurses also offer an Acute Pain service;
by where the nursing team work across Salford Royal Hospital providing advice,
support and intervention for inpatients with pain.

The Hospital Specialist Palliative Care Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) provides:
 Direct patient care where palliative care needs are complex and cannot be
met by the hospital and/or Primary Care Team
 Indirect patient care through advice and education of generalist colleagues

PALLIATIVE CARE COUNSELLING SERVICE*
The Specialist Palliative Care Counselling Service is a community based counselling
service. This specialist service provides emotional and psychological support to
patients with potentially life threatening or terminal illness and those directly involved
in their care. It offers a wide range of therapeutic approaches based on an initial
assessment. During the assessment interview the counsellor selects the most
appropriate therapeutic intervention to meet the individual needs of the client.
THE PANDA UNIT
The PANDA Unit (Paediatric Assessment and Decision Area) provides dedicated
emergency and short stay care for children less than 16 years of age. This is a
consultant-led service within which children can be assessed, investigated, observed
and treated within 24 hours and without recourse to inpatient areas. The unit also
provides a Tier 2 Paediatric referral service for residents of Salford, or those patients
with a Salford GP. Gate-keeping by Paediatric and Emergency Medicine Consultants
ensures that over 96% of attendees are currently discharged home direct from the
Panda Unit. Early discharge is supported by a dedicated team of children’s
community nursing staff that support integrated care between Panda and primary
care services.’
PATHOLOGY
The Directorate comprises the following departments:
Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Immunology,
Microbiology and Cellular Pathology. The departments provide a comprehensive and
wide ranging diagnostic, analytical, interpretative and clinical advisory service for
Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, General Practitioners in Salford and regional
services in several specialist areas. All departments have full accreditation with
Clinical Pathology Accreditation UK Ltd. Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and
Blood Transfusion provide a 24/7, 365 days per year service. Microbiology provides a
Monday – Friday 9.00 – 17.30 service and 8.00 – 12.00 noon Saturday and Sunday
service with on-call provision outside these times. Cellular Pathology and
Immunology provide a Monday – Friday 9.00 – 17.30 service.
PHARMACY SERVICE
The Pharmacy Service offers a wide range of pharmaceutical service to patients and
staff at the hospital, the local primary care trust, St Ann’s Hospice and a local private
hospital. This includes procuring and dispensing medicines and providing any
additional information that clinical staff may require about the use of medicines. The
service offers a clinical service to all ward areas. Ward areas are visited by a ward
based pharmacy team on a daily basis. Clinical pharmacists give support to medical
and nursing staff on prescribing and administration of medicines. Pharmacy
technicians ensure that medicines are supplied in a timely manner and pharmacy
assistants provide drug stock items to wards and departments.
The clinical service is supported by a Medicines Information (MI) unit and an Aseptic
Preparation Unit . The MI unit is part of the national UK MI Service and is based in
the inpatient Pharmacy. The Aseptic Preparation unit prepares sterile drug products
for use in the hospital. These products include cytotoxic chemotherapy, parenteral
nutrition (intravenous feeding) and a centralised intravenous additive service. The
products made are produced to quality standards through manufacturing practice

guidelines and the unit is inspected regularly by NHS Quality Control NorthWest. The
service supports over 50 clinical trials and has a newly opened clinical trials
dispensary.
PHYSIOTHERAPY*
The Physiotherapy Service offers: Assessment and treatment of physical and
respiratory function, mobility and independence. Pre and post-operative
rehabilitation. Treatment includes the use of exercise, rehabilitation programmes,
hydrotherapy, pain-relieving techniques such as hot and cold therapy, electrotherapy,
acupuncture. Services are provide within the hospital environment and in out patient
clinics Extended Scope Physiotherapists support Consultant Clinics in Orthopaedics
and Rheumatology as agreed in the AHP contract
RADIOLOGY
Emergency radiology – plain films are available on demand for the Emergency and
PANDA departments. CT, MR and US examinations are available following
discussion with appropriate Radiologist for justification and direction of the
appropriate examination and sequence.
Outpatient radiology - Pain film radiology is available for outpatients and
orthopaedic and fracture clinics 8.30am-6pm, Monday to Friday. Outpatient plain film
radiology outside of these times is by arrangement. CT, MR, US, Nuclear Medicine,
Fluoroscopy and Interventional radiology are available by appointment. Urgent
examinations are appointed within 2 weeks, all non urgent are appointed within 6
weeks. Interventional Radiology encompasses Neuro radiology, GI, Renal and MSK.
Inpatient radiology - Plain film radiology is available for in patients on demand. CT,
MR, US, Nuclear Medicine, Fluoroscopy and Interventional radiology are available
following discussion with appropriate Radiologist for justification and direction of the
appropriate examination and sequence.
Mobile and Theatre radiology -This is provided on demand with appropriate
referral.
Breast Imaging - A symptomatic Breast Imaging service is available working in
conjunction with SRFT Breast service. A full range of breast imaging is available,
mammography, breast ultrasound, FNA and biopsies. All mammograms are double
reported to ‘gold standard’.
Lithotripsy – A lithotripsy service is available in radiology 2, working in conjunction
with SRFT Urology.
DEXA - is provided by SRFT Radiology by currently using a 3rd party imaging facility
on site at SRFT. Reporting of these images is provided by SRFT Radiologists.
Reporting Service - SRFT Radiology provide a Consultant reporting service for the
following areas, Mid Cheshire ICATS, Bolton ICATS, Salford Neuro ICATS, SPINAL
ICATS and Plain Film MSK ICATS.
RECEPTION SERVICE
ABC provides a reception Service to the majority of the Outpatient clinics within
Salford Royal Hospital. This function ensures all patients are greeted when arriving

at clinic, and additional checks made to ensure the patient’s details on the PAS
system are correct and up to date. The reception team also ensure that the patient’s
attendance is noted on the PAS system correctly, and update the attendance with the
correct outcome following the appointment. At this point additional follow up
appointments will also be booked.
RESPIRATORY MEDICINE*
The Department of Respiratory Medicine provides a District-based respiratory service
for the resident population of Salford. The Department has a variety of subspecialty
interests:- Specialist Respiratory Nurse Service, Bronchoscopy Service, Sleep
Service, Lung Cancer service, POSH service, Difficult Asthma Service, Community
COPD service, Interstitial lung disease service, Combine immunology/respiratory
Bronchiectasis clinic, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Supervision of CAST service (COPD
Assessment and Support Team).
RHEUMATOLGY*
The Rheumatology Department has 5 NHS/Academic Consultant colleagues and 3
Specialist Registrars to provide comprehensive Rheumatological care. The
multidisciplinary support team consists of research clinicians and nurses and
dedicated nurse specialists and therapists. There are also excellent and dedicated
Musculoskeletal Radiology services, allowing weekly educational combined
meetings. The Clinical Directorate prides itself on the delivery of high quality
multidisciplinary care, and the busy outpatient department is supported by inpatient
specialty beds with dedicated ward staff. In addition to general Rheumatology, the
clinical department also acts as a tertiary referral centre for patients with problematic
Connective Tissue Diseases including scleroderma, myositis, SLE, and as a tertiary
referral centre for problematic Metabolic Bone Diseases and Musculoskeletal Pain.
SALFORD CARE HOMES PRACTICE*
The Salford Care Homes Practice is a GP Practice that provides Primary Care for
residents of nursing homes in Salford. The practice manages patients who: are ill
with conditions from which recovery is generally expected; have a chronic disease;
or are terminally ill and require non-specialist care.
SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICE
The School Health Service is based within schools and promotes healthier lifestyles,
physical, psychological and social well being. The service is for families with children
aged 4 to 16 years who have a Salford GP or go to a Salford school. In addition, 16
to 18 year-olds can be offered support around spontaneous Safeguarding issues,
working in partnership with schools. The role of the School Health Service is to
identify health needs and address inequalities of health.
SEXUAL HEALTH SERVICE
Salford’s Sexual Health Service includes Genito-urinary Medicine (GUM), HIV and
Contraception. The service is provided and made available to young people and
adults mainly via open access, no appointment community clinics, allowing clients to
have most of their sexual health needs met in one visit in a location of their choice.
The service provides assessments, testing, screening, contraception, treatment,
therapies, counselling, and promotes sexual well being and healthy lifestyles.

Looked After Children’s Service
The ‘Looked After Children’s Health Needs Team offers a dedicated health service
to children and young people who are ‘looked after’ by Salford Local Authority and
children and young people living in Salford who are ‘looked after‘ by other local
authorities.
Youth Offending Service
The Specialist Nurse Youth Offending Service offers a dedicated health service to
children and young who are involved with youth justice services in Salford.
Substance Misuse Service
The Specialist Nurse within the S.M.A.R.T Team offers a dedicated health service to
young people living in Salford with issues around substances and alcohol misuse
which may impact on their health and wellbeing. The ‘Looked After Children’s Health
Needs Team offers a dedicated health service to children and young people who are
‘looked after’ by Salford Local Authority and children and young people living in
Salford who are ‘looked after‘ by other local authorities.
SPINAL SURGERY
The Salford Spinal Surgery Service provides both Specialised and Secondary spinal
surgery services for the patients of Greater Manchester, Mid-Cheshire, the Northwest
and beyond. The service in Salford is one the largest and most active in the country,
serving one of the largest populations, and delivering audited, high quality outcomes.
The service comprises of:
 17 standard care beds on the Spinal Unit
 Access to a 10 bedded Neuroscience High Dependency Unit
 Access to a 22 bedded Intensive Care Unit
 Access 2 short stay wards F3 and G1
 Access to 2 neurosurgical wards
 Access to day surgery theatres for local anaesthetic procedures
 1 dedicated spinal theatre
 Access to a 24 hour emergency theatre
The support services for investigation and management of spinal conditions are
excellent and include full radiological facilities, as well as a close working relationship
with the neurophysiology service in providing intra-operative monitoring for scoliosis /
spinal deformity cases. There are also close links with the paediatric spinal surgery
service at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, which enables for excellent
transitional care into the adult service.
The Spinal Department at Salford Royal Hospital operates a Spinal Surgery
Assessment Service for all outpatient referrals. By where patients referral letters are
reviewed by a consultant who then decides whether it is necessary for patients to
attend a radiological scan in the first instance. This scan will be reviewed at a
multidisciplinary team meeting and a decision will be made as to whether a spinal
clinic appointment is required, or whether it is not the spinal team that the patient
needs to be under the care of. This is to enable the patient to get to the right clinic as

quickly as possible, whilst minimising the number of hospital visits that the patient will
make.
As well as providing clinics at Salford Royal Hospital the spinal service also provide
outreach spinal clinics at Leighton Hospital, Crewe & Manchester Childrens Hospital,
in addition to the following services:
 Specialist Outpatients at SRFT & RMCH
 Inpatient Spinal Surgery, including scoliosis and deformity surgery, spinal
tumour and trauma surgery, complex cervical surgery.
 Day case Spinal Assessment Bed for inpatients with complex problems from

TIER 2 DERMATOLOGY*
The Tier 2 Dermatology Service provides triage, assessment diagnosis and
management of a range of identified dermatological conditions for children and adults
who are registered with a Salford GP. This service is provided in community based
clinics in partnership with Salford Royal.
TIER 2 NEUROLOGY (HEADACHES AND EPILEPSY)*
The Tier 2 Neurology Service comprises of two individual services, Headache and
Epilepsy. The Headache service provides assessment, diagnosis and management
for patients who present with headache within primary care. The epilepsy service
provides community follow up for patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy.
TISSUE VIABILITY SERVICE
The Tissue Viability Service provides assessment, treatment and advice on all
aspects of tissue viability and pressure relieving equipment provision, identify health
needs and address inequalities of health, in addition to this the service provides
support to patients around wound care issues and preventative intervention.
TRAUMA & ORTHOPAEDICS
The orthopaedic directorate provides services for a number of subspecialties. There
are eleven consultant surgeons. There is a trauma service led by a lead consultant
and supported by orthopaedic advanced nurse practitioners. This aims to provide a
high quality service for all trauma patients with a particular focus on the care of
patients with fractured neck of femur.
Elective care is provided by the lower limb teams, with interests in hip, knee, foot and
reconstructive surgery. The upper limb team have interests in hand and shoulder
surgery.

Inpatient care is provided for trauma patients primarily on ward B6. This is also
supported by two consultant ortho-geriatricians. Non day case elective care is
provided on the elective ward, B5.
The directorate runs its own outpatient department. It is also due to take
responsibility for its own operating theatres, recovery and supplies team.
