TOGAS, TEMPLES AND TALES-LIFE IN ANCIENT GREECE Description: Each day will be filled with hands on activities to learn about ancient Greek life, art, democracy, myths and games. Activities will include making ancient musical instruments, pottery and crafts, water clocks and voting stones and large scale temple. Camp will also include field trips to a local art museum and farmer’s market to see how modern life has been influenced by the Ancient Greeks. The final day of camp will conclude with an Olympics Games and Feast! Activities: Art Ancient Pottery making techniques Music Make ancient musical intruments (Lyre) Daily Life How to dress like an ancient greek (togas) Agora or farmer’s market Myths Learn the Greek gods and goddess (Daulieres’) Read a myth Democracy Waterclock and voting stones Olympics and games Architecture Build a temple (large model of Parthenon or Tholos) Column hunt Science Archemedes screw Supplies: Togas: sheets from vinny’s, safety pins, Room Decoration and teaching supplies:Maps and Posters of Greece Lyre: paper bowls rubber bands cardboard popsicle sticks string, tape Pottery: clay (modeling dough?, cinnamon applesauce dough), paper for crayon resist Head dresses: leaves and ribbon Games: hula hoops, cones, javelin, discus, long jump Temple: cardboard tubes, (make a small scale model to keep) Archemedes Screw: coffee cans or soda bottles Stones for voting: using model magic Coins: use model magic and impression stamp Myths: pick 2 each day to read. Make posters or temples or altars to each. Day 1: Introductions, groundrules, overview, Where is Greece? What is it like? Toga dressing, brainstorm what kids do now and what Ancient greek kids did. Read 2 myths and start talking about the Ancient Greek gods and goddess Make greek folders and come up with a god or goddess they would like to be-what are their characteristics. Make a lyre (paper bowls) Make a waterclock (soda bottles?) Voting stones and practice a vote. Begin making temples (toilet paper tubes) Begin making clay pots Day2: Field trip to Chasen Column hunt on way back If time allows work on temples Read a myth during snack Day3: Begin clay pots, coins and Olympic items Make wreaths for Olympics Talk about what games to have for our Olympics (Pentathalon) Discus (Frisbee) Javelin Long Jump Ancient Feasts and Symposia Day 4 finish with Olympic items Olympics (outside) Olympic Ceremony with crowns Feast Finish any art projects.
