Statistics and K-12 in the United States: We’ve Come a Long Way!

Abstract: The United States is realizing the need to achieve a level of quantitative literacy for its high school
graduates to prepare them to thrive in the modern world. Given the prevalence of statistics in the media and
workplace, individuals who aspire to a wide range of positions and careers require a certain level of statistical
literacy. Because of the emphasis on data and statistical understanding, it is crucial for us as educators to consider
how we can prepare a statistically literate population. Students must acquire an adequate level of statistical literacy
through their education beginning in the first grade of education.
The Common Core State Standards for mathematics (that include statistics) in grades Kindergarten – 12 have been
adopted by the most states and the District of Columbia. These national standards for the teaching of statistics and
probability range from counting the number in each category to determining statistical significance through the use
of simulation and randomization tests.
This presentation will provide a brief history of statistics at K-12 in the U.S., an overview of the statistics and
probability content of these common core standards, resources that support the K-12 standards in statistics,
describe the knowledge and preparation needed by the future and current K–12 teachers who will be teaching using
these standards, and the desired assessment of statistics at K-12 on the high stakes national tests will be explored.

1A Preparing Student and Teachers to Navigate the Data Stream

In this session, we will summarize and describe distributions of numerical data focusing on understanding measures
of center and variability (spread) emphasizing the mean and mean absolute deviation (MAD). We will evolve to
using random sampling to draw inferences about a population mean by using simulation to explore the question,
“How close can we expect a sample mean to be to a population mean?” We will develop understanding of center and
statistical variability by utilizing hands on activities.

There is nothing magical about putting students in groups. Students can compete with groupmates, students can
work individually while ignoring groupmates, or students can work cooperatively with groupmates.
When students are working together in a group they are



engaged in explaining to others. Learning, thinking, talking are interrelated
become actively involved rather than are being passive receivers of Teachers explanations
able to assume an instructional role.
In this workshop we will look at a selection of activities across the strands that can be used to support students to
work cooperatively in the classroom.

The subject of statistics is rife with misleading terms, from this workshop we will look at some key Statistical terms
such as Sampling Error and Non-Sampling Error, sampling variability. We will also look at how to use Google Doc in
teaching and assessing Statistics standards.
1D Strategies for raising student engagement and achievement

We will share experiences of running tutorials outside of class and helping at homework centres. This workshop will
focus on how these settings effect student achievement, engagement and confidence in mathematics. We will also
explain how offering this time encourages an environment of success and a growing enjoyment of the subject. We
will share activities that we have used in our classrooms.

2A Stimulating Simulations for AS91268

Do you have students to graph and discuss the distribution of their simulation results as part of their assessment for
AS91269? Do you teach simulations as part of your probability topic? If you've answered no to either of these
questions, then this workshop is (highly likely to be) for you!
This workshop will explore simulations with a focus on probability modelling. We'll identify the key ideas and
concepts that we need to develop, not just for the assessment of AS91268, but also so that we can offer a coherent
statistics learning pathway from NCEA Level 1 to NCEA Level 3. A sequence of lessons and activities used for teaching
this standard will be presented, shared and discussed.
This workshop is aimed at teachers who are already familiar with this standard, but would like to gain some new
ideas or a new perspective on using simulations at NCEA Level 2.

Making the internals work for you – Level 3 Trigonometry at Rainbows End

When the standards changed a few years ago I was left with a bit of a dilemma, like us all, as to how much of the
new Trigonometry Standard at Level 3 needed to be assessed vs how to teach proper modelling skills in a way that
the students could really empathise with.
I'll talk through how I managed to teach the whole standard so that it seemed coherent and run the internal in
Auckland's favourite (only?) Theme Park, Rainbows End! There will be examples of assessments, student work and
classroom activities to take away with you.
