Practice 3: Identifying Nouns
The following passage has many nouns, underline all the nouns you can find.
Simon asks his mother if she can buy him a dog. Simon has always wanted a dog named Charlie, and now
that he is fourteen years old, he thinks that he is old enough to have his own pet. Simon’s mother tells
him that if he babysits his little brother, Jack, the whole summer, and shows responsibility; then she will
let him get a dog when the next school year starts. Then every day, Simon has to wake up early every
morning, and go on his paper route. He has to come home, and babysit Jack until his mother comes home
from work in the evening. Then when the summer ends, Simon’s mother is impressed with his dedication
and decides to get him a dog. Simon wants to adopt a dog from the shelter, so him and his mother go
together to look for a good dog. After looking at a few dogs, Simon decides to adopt a small Jack Russell
terrier. He names the dog Charlie.
Subject and Object Nouns
A subject noun is a noun that performs the action of the verb in the sentence. For example, consider the
following sentences:

Maryam goes to class early.
Salalah attracts thousands of tourists every year.
In the above sentences, ‘Ahmed’, ‘Maryam’, and ‘Salalah’ are all performing the action of the verb; hence,
they are all subject nouns.
An object noun is a noun that receives the action of the verb. For example, consider the following
sentences:
The bus carries the students to school.
Teachers use many books for teaching.
Sara reads Fatima’s letter silently.
In the above sentences ‘students’, ‘books’, and ‘letter’ are all receiving the action of the verb.
The students are receiving the action of being carried by the bus.
Books are receiving the action of being used by teachers.
2
OMAN COLLEGE OF MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY
