Norton House
Address
Ocean Front Walk 2509
Los Angeles California 90291
United States
.
One of Gehry's earlier projects, the Norton House experiments
with a variety of different materials, including concrete block,
glazed tile, stucco and timber logs. The property sits directly on
the ocean front boardwalk, but the bedrooms and personal
spaces are pushed farther back to give privacy. According to
Gehry, "their varied texture and colors reflect the visual chaos of
the building's complex urban context". The private perch which
overlooks the beach is a studio/office for the owner who was
once a lifeguard.

LAPD Headquarters Facility

.
The programming and design of this dynamic new 480,000 square
foot Los Angeles Police Department [LAPD] Administration
Headquarters Facility presented a singular set of challenges to
the design team led by Los Angeles-based AECOM and
Denver-based Roth + Sheppard Architects. In addition to
addressing critical contextual and site considerations, this
landmark public building had to meet precise programmatic
mandates and modern day federal security requirements while
delivering an iconic counterpoint to the City's most powerful
architecture. The resultant LEED Gold structure and inviting
urban spaces throughout the 162,508 square foot site, deliver a
striking, yet highly functional new headquarters to the Los
Angeles Civic Center and downtown community.

Chiat Day Office Building
Address
Main Street 340
Los Angeles California 90291
United States
.
Frank Gehry's Chiat/Day office building is a collaborative project
with Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen who are known for
their monumental artworks of everyday objects. The binoculars
at the entrance contain two small conference rooms with the
eyepieces serving as skylights for the rooms. The building also
showcases one of Gehry's first uses of a thin metal panel skin,
seen in his later works like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and
the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

LA Louver lies about as far west as one can go. Just off the
boardwalk in Venice, this gallery features some of the most
prestigious names in contemporary art. This is the temple where
David Hockney will display a mural before it sells to a museum. It
is the perfect environment to view the sleek and mysterious
sculptures of John McCraken. It's where sculptor Peter Shelton
astounds, Ed Moses hangs his hat (and his paintings), rockabilly
artist Terry Allen provides the humor and wit, and mere mortals
can come to oggle the selections (text from

LAPD Motor Transport Division
Address
S Main St 260
Los Angeles California CA 90012
United States
.
Located in Downtown Los Angeles, one block from the Los
Angeles Police Department's new headquarters, this 300,000
square foot, 5-story concrete structure integrates three
components that typically stand on their own: an 800 car parking
structure for the LAPD's employees; a mechanics' garage, car
wash, and refueling station for the LAPD's top brass; and a
culturally-oriented retail component along Main Street. Holding
all these elements together is an undulating, vertically-banded,
stainless steel mesh screen which stretches across the full width
of the 300-foot long structure. Painted in a pattern of leaf-like
forms with two tones of green, it creates a dynamic, joyful image
that represents the 'greening' of Los Angeles.

Union Oil Gas Station
Address
Slauson Ave 4700
Los Angeles California 90056
United States
.
Situated at La Brea and Slauson Avenues in Los Angeles' Mid-City
neighbourhood, the Union Oil Gas Station is a marriage of the
city's historic love affair with the automobile and today's modern,
one-stop shopping spirit of immediate gratification and
convenience. The daring and active design seeks to resuscitate a
streetscape through integration of a 12-pump gas station,
mini-market and car wash. The resulting structure is an original
machine of vehicular form and function. Mirroring Southern
California's ubiquitous freeway interchanges, two planes soar from
the ground. One, a concrete ramp, takes patrons up and over the
rear of the mini-market and back down into a car wash. The
second, a sinuous and curvilinear metal structure, swoops down
from the sky to serve as the roof of the mini-market. The form
regains an upward momentum that carries it around the front of
the market where it becomes a 30-foot canopy over the pumps.

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels
Address
West Temple Street 555
Los Angeles California 90012
United States
http://www.olacathedral.org
.
After a 1996 earthquake ruined St. Vibiana's cathedral, Rafael
Moneo was asked to design a new church which is located a few
blocks away from the original structure. The main point of
interest in this building is that the entrance is adjacent to the
alter, a reversed plan compared to most cathedrals. Entering from
the street and traveling up the steps to the main plaza, the
visitor enters the cathedral through two huge bronze doors. A
large ambulatory runs down the side of the church, giving the
visitor glimpses of the large nave as they pass by a number of
small chapels. Reaching the rear of the church, one then enters a
large austere space, almost devoid of decoration. Another unique
feature is the lack of stained glass. The cathedral is instead lit by
thin alabaster stone diffusing the sunlight into a very white light,
illuminating most of the spaces.

Getty Center Central Garden
Address
Getty Center Drive 1200
Los Angeles California 90049
United States
http://www.getty.edu/visit/see_do/gardens.html
.
The Central Garden at the Getty Center was a topic of much
controversy during its construction. Designed by famed painter
Robert Irwin, the gardens do not follow the gridded nature of the
adjacent buildings, but rather slash across the 'valley', and mix
bright swathes of colour against the green lawns before ending in
a large circular pool. Richard Meier so hated the garden's design
that a documentary called 'Concert of Wills: Making the Getty
Center' primarily focuses on the arguments between the two
designers. Luckily for us, Irwin's design won out. As Irwin puts it,
"A garden is an adventure, and nature is probably the closest
thing you're going to get to that kind of -- moving in a world, you
know -- push-pull, in-out, up-down, right and wrong. After a
certain time, once the garden got going, it changed all the rules.
It did things that were so much better than I had thought."

High School No. 9 for the Visual and
Performing Arts
Address
N. Grand Ave 450
Los Angeles California 90012
United States
.
High School #9 is the latest addition to the LA Unified School
District's investment in forward thinking architecture. Located on
the edge of the 'canyon' created by the 101 freeway, it sits
directly opposite of the Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles. The
school campus will include four academies for education in
music, dance, theater arts and visual arts, and a theatre which
will be open to the public. The theatre lobby that forms the
public entrance to the theatre, symbolically emphazises the
openness of the school to the public and simultaneously serves as
an exhibition space which can be linked to the visual arts studios
and the event space on top of the tower. A truncated cone,
placed at the centre of the site, serves as an oculus to the library
below. A grand stair case wrapping around the cone creates a
large public space that still affords some privacy in the busyness
of downtown.

Built in 1984, Frank Gehry's 'Sketch Foundation Gallery - Air and
Space Exhibits' at the California Science Center exemplifies his
irreverent, exploded-then-reassembled sensibilities in
architecture. Irregular, angular forms break from their implied
boundaries and overlap in unexpected, provocative ways,
seemingly defying basic precepts of order and structure in
building engineering. The Los Angeles building is known for its
metal cladding, reminiscent of airplane skin, and for the iconic
jet fighter permanently poised as though leaping over the
entrance wall.

Wilshire Boulevard 5905

.
The LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) has the latest
addition to the Los Angeles art scene. Over the past 40 years, it
had become a sprawling mess with buildings scattered without
connection over a few city blocks. After initially choosing Rem
Koolhaas to bring the complex of buildings together, the museum
board quickly changed their mind and selected Renzo Piano in
2002, who offered a more plausible design. The only new
building, this Broad Contemporary Art Museum, features the
skylit galleries and rooftop louvres Piano has become known for in
his museums. He also connected the remaining buildings with a
glass entrance pavilion. The exterior design is simple and clean;
evoking qualities of both the Getty Center, 10 miles to the west,
as well as the Case Study program from the 1940's and 1950's.

Caltrans District 7 Headquarters
Address
S. Main Street 100
Los Angeles California 90012
United States
.
The entire eastern and western façades of the Caltrans District 7
Headquarters are composed of a double skin of metal screens
that open and close depending on outside temperatures. The
porous nature of the screens create a movement of perception
throughout the day, from a solid metal box at noon to one of
translucence in the evening. The southern façade is covered
almost entirely in solar panels, producing about 5% of the
building's energy needs. At night, the red and blue neon tubes of
Keith Sonnier's art piece, 'Motordom', light up the courtyard.
Casting the courtyard into an eerie light, these luminescent strips
evoke the movement and fluidity of the 'car culture' in Los
Angeles.

Sitting atop the historic Bunker Hill in downtown Los Angeles, the
Walt Disney Concert Hall occupies a site adjacent to the existing
Music Center in Los Angeles. Originally conceived in 1987, the
project was put on hold for nearly 12 years, until the necessary
funding was found. After Gehry's success with the Guggenheim in
Bilbao, Spain, the project plans quickly moved forward and
construction began in 1999. At the opening ceremony, Gehry
recounted his ideas of inspiration for the project that he had
shared with Mrs. Disney. He said that she should think of the Hall
as a bowl of white roses, and that he wanted to make a flower

The Getty Center straddles two hillside ridges in the Santa Monica
mountains like a modernist Acropolis. This campus of buildings is
more than just a museum; it is also a concert hall, an office
complex, a research centre and a library. The museum is
composed of five galleries arranged around a long courtyard
fountain. The skin of all of the buildings is composed of 30-inch
square panels, made of aluminium painted white, Meier's
signature. Even the Italian travertine stonework follows this
30-inch grid pattern. The use of white in Meier's projects allows
him to skilfully manipulate the natural light, reflecting the
colours of the building's environment. The buildings are the most
beautiful in the late afternoon/dusk when the golden light
washes across the travertine and the sun sets across the Pacific
Ocean.

Gehry House
Address
22nd Street 1002
Santa Monica California 90403
United States
.
Normally, one doesn't expect a Deconstructivist iconic building
nestled in a quiet, suburban setting, but that is the house that
Frank Gehry built in Santa Monica. The original two-storey "dumb
little house with charm," as Mr. Gehry famously called it, can
still be seen behind his renovation. While his later experiments in
architecture tended toward extravagantly curved titanium skins,
in his earlier works everyday materials and techniques such as
corrugated metal, chain-link fence and exposed structure were
used. In some examples, he wraps the entire building with these
materials, completely encapsulating them. However, in doing so,
he also frees the building to do much more than it originally
could. A renovation in 1993 softened some of the original
experimentation, but the original ideas can still be seen in this
unique house.

The Umbrella
Address
Hayden Avenue 3535
Culver City California 90016

The Umbrella in Culver City, Los Angeles was originally designed
as an outdoor performance balcony for a series of experimental
concerts put on by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, called 'The
Green Umbrella'. With the Disney Concert Hall bringing all
Philharmonic activity to downtown, the Umbrella became an
office building for an internet company. This project is one of
Eric Owen Moss' first experiments in the use of laminated glass,
something he continued to explore in later projects.

Eames House
Address

.
Also known as Case Study House #8, the Eames House was one of
25 homes built as part of The Case Study House Program. The
program sought to explore the methods of designing and building
inexpensive and efficient model homes using techniques and
materials derived from the production lines following World War
II. The Eames house served as both their home and their studio
nestled into a wooded bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The
Mondrianesque panel facade is composed of cheap steel and glass
parts that could be found in a catalog. Of the twenty-five Case
Study Houses built, the Eames house is considered the most
successful both as an architectural statement and as a
comfortable, functional living space.

.
This whimsical, colorful building crowns the northwest quadrant
of the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. Built to unite
the corporate executives offices, the design pays homage to Snow
White and the Seven Dwarves, the movie that made it possible
for Walt Disney to purchase this site in 1937. The front façade is
a Post-Modern interpretation of the Parthenon, with dwarfs,
nearly 6 meters in height, holding up the pediment and facing a
pedestrian plaza and reflecting pool. Formerly known as simply
Team Disney Burbank, the building was renamed in 2006 to
honour former Disney CEO Michael Eisner.

3555 Building
Address
Hayden Ave 3555
Culver City California 90016
United States
.
Moss' exploration of form and materials continues here with his
latest building, a television studio in the Hayden Tract. Once a
brick warehouse, the new design seems to rest upon the roof of
the old building. The primary zoning constraint for the project
was limited to a 13m height limit. The form of the roof of the
project was manipulated to comply with an average height
overall but distribute volume where needed. The complex roof
geometry necessitated large glue-laminated beams to achieve the
curving form. The wood structure is exposed on the interior and
thus the skin is constructed as an insulated package. This skin is a
sandwich construction of plywood shear diaphragm on the
interior, cement board fire retardant sheathing on the exterior
and rigid insulation between. Lastly, the waterproofing is an
innovative spray-applied fiberglass material - specially developed
for this project - that conforms to the curved roof and offers a
unique aesthetic with its glassy translucency.

Stealth Building
Address
Hayden Ave 3530
Culver City California 90016
United States
.
The Stealth Building, one of Eric Owen Moss' largest, is a bold
angular building that forms the gateway to the Conjunctive
Points complex. The primary geometric form is an exploration of
a square setion (south end) transforming into a triangular section
(north end). This overlapping of form creates unique spaces
within the structure. Elevated against 3 existing warehouses, a
portion of the site was dug out to remove contaminated soil.
This dugout portion was incorporated into the design, becoming
an outdoor grass theater area.

The Beehive
Address
National Blvd 8522
Culver City California 90016
United States
.
The Beehive is a part of Conjuctive Points, a development that
Moss has been working on with the owner of the Hayden Tract for
some time. For this building, an existing two-storey, wood
building was removed and a new two-storey structure was
designed over the same footprint, leaving only the street façade
as a place for the architect to creatively explore with materials.
The project is an exercise in creating a public image for the
building that is capable of communicating its presence in a
limited area along a busy street (text from architect's website).

Camino Nuevo Charter High School
Address
W. Temple St 3500

Only in Los Angeles will you find a high school located entirely
within a traffic island. Bounded on all sides by two major streets
in the historic Filipinotown neighbourhood, the complex attempts
to recover a piece of land found undesirable by most developers.
The plan is snake-like, undulating within the confined space.
Perforated screens enclose most of the skin, further separating
the classrooms from the nearby street. These screens are painted
yellow and grey in a pattern that uses more yellow along the
convex curves and less where they are concave, to give further
emphasis.

Operated as a joint venture between the California Science
Center and the LAUSD, the Alexander Science Center School has
the distinct privilege of being sited between world class science
museums, and University of Southern California (USC) The school
features an integrated curriculum emphasizing science,
mathematics and the use of technology, and this is reflected in
the architecture. The planted roof on the north building reduces
heat load thereby reducing demand on the mechanical systems.
The siting of the building below the established grade and with
the protection of a large planted berm on Exposition Blvd.
protects the lower level of the structure from intense sun
exposure.

Getty Villa
Address
Pacific Coast Highway 17985
Pacific Palisades California 90265
United States
http://www.getty.edu/visit/
.
In 1997, the Getty Villa (a faithful re-creation of the Villa dei
Papiri, in Herculaneum, Italy) began an extensive renovation
following the completion of the Getty Center, a few miles to the
east. The result is one of hidden architectural gems in the
Southern California architecture scene. Machado and Silvetti
have created a Modernist archaeological site nestled into a small
canyon alongside the aging villa. Often times, a new addition to
a museum either copies the existing style or reacts against it.
Here, however, the architects have pulled off something quite
extraordinary, a perfect melding of a Modernist palette with a
traditional style, both visually and functionally. The visual
layering of elements evokes the feeling of an archaeological dig,
where the architecture is revealed rather than built. At times it
is impossible to tell where the renovation transitions into the
existing.
