Strategy Progression Tracker – First Level I can share ideas with others to develop ways of estimating the answer to a calculation or problem, work out the actual answer, and then check my solution by comparing it with the estimate. MNU 1-01a I have investigated how whole numbers are constructed, can understand the importance of zero within the system and can use my knowledge to explain the link between a digit, its place and its value. MNU 1-02a I can use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division when solving problems, making best use of the mental strategies and written skills I have developed. MNU 1-02a I can continue and devise more involved repeating patterns or designs, using a range of media. MTH 1-13a Through exploring number patterns, I can recognise and continue simple number sequences and can explain the rule I have applied. MTH 1-13b I can compare, describe and show number relationships, using appropriate number vocabulary and the symbols for equals, not equals to, less than and greater than. MTH 1-15a When a picture or number symbol is used to replace a number in a number statement, I can find its value using my knowledge of number facts and explain my thinking to others. MTH 1-15b Strategies: I can…. First*/Stage Four NZ maths/Counting on and back Maths Recovery Addition and Subtraction Solve adding problems by counting on from the bigger number (HNP p29) Solve subtracting problems by counting back from the biggest number (HNP p29) Solve missing addend problems by counting on from the bigger number (HNP p29) Solve missing subtrahend problems by counting down to the number remaining (HNP p29) Solve adding and subtracting problems by counting in tens (HNP p28) Multiplication and Division Solve multiplication problems by skip-counting in twos, fives and tens (HNP p32) Solve division problems by grouping collections into equal sets or sharing into equal groups (HNP p34) Fractions Find halves and quarters of shapes and sets by equal sharing Also see NZ maths books: Book 5 - Addition and Subtraction /Book 6 – Multiplication and Division and Maths Recovery Books: Teaching Number in the Classroom (Wright et al) and Developing Number Knowledge (Wright et al) Check the Highland Numeracy Blog for links: https://highlandnumeracyblog.wordpress.com/ Strategy Progression Tracker – First Level I can share ideas with others to develop ways of estimating the answer to a calculation or problem, work out the actual answer, and then check my solution by comparing it with the estimate. MTH 1-15b Strategies: I can…. First **/***/Stage Five NZ maths/Facile Counting Maths Recovery Addition and Subtraction Solve simple problems mentally by using Basic Facts I know: Doubles/ Five-based facts/ Making tens (HNP p29) Solve 2 and 3 digit number problems using partitioning through tidy numbers (Split second number into parts to jump to/back nearest decade - HNP p29) Solve 2 and 3 digit number problems by partitioning tens and ones (HNP p28) Solve addition problems using the commutative property (HNP p28) Solve problems using my understanding that addition and subtraction are inversely related (e.g. solve subtraction problems by adding up) (HNP p30) Find the difference between quantities by adding or subtracting (HNP p31) Multiplication and Division Record arrays as multiplication sentences and work out the total (HNP p37) Use repeated addition or subtraction to work out an unknown fact from a known fact (e.g. I know 6 x 5 = 30, so 5 x 5 must be 25 - HNP p35) Use repeated addition or subtraction to solve division problems (HNP p35) Form factors when I know the Basic Facts (HNP p35) Fractions Find a fraction of a number by trial and improvement using addition facts Find fractions of lengths and shapes, including fractions greater than 1 Put fractions in order from smallest to biggest or vice versa Also see NZ maths books: Book 5 - Addition and Subtraction /Book 6 – Multiplication and Division and Maths Recovery Books: Teaching Number in the Classroom (Wright et al) and Developing Number Knowledge (Wright et al) Check the Highland Numeracy Blog for links: https://highlandnumeracyblog.wordpress.com/
