Research and design a costume for a specified performance context 26799 Version 1 Internal 4 credits People credited with this unit standard are able to research and design a costume for a specified performance context. Criteria for Merit In researching and designing the costume, the candidate makes links between their research, the requirements of the specified performance context, and their costume design. Criteria for Excellence In researching and designing the costume, the candidate justifies the links between their research, the requirements of the specified performance context, and their costume design. FEMINIST THEATRE 101: Production Task: Costume Student instructions Introduction This assessment activity requires you to prepare for and perform the role of Costume Designer for the Year 12 production of a Feminist Theatre 101. You will work with each of the groups and the two classes as a whole to support the performance on stage. You will identify the requirements for each scene, in terms of individual characters required and then select 3 individual characters from three different scenes across the classes. You will then work with director of each scene to design, refine and source the costumes as required to meet the intention/effect. You will work with the crew to pack-in the costumes, maintain it and pack away following the production as required. You will submit a statement of intention which includes the lists of requirements for each of your three characters and a list of costumes required. You will provide annotated designs to show your intentions and notes-to-self to show how you organised yourself and the crew during the performance. You will be assessed on this supporting material along with your completion of the role and to what degree you have realised your intentions in the performance. You will work closely with the directors of the scenes to realise the intention of each scene. The preparation for this activity will take place over 6 weeks of in- and out-of-class time. You will be assessed individually on how effectively you perform your production role. Task Preparation Your teacher will provide you with scripts of each scene / excerpt. You will research and design costumes recording the process using appropriate vocabulary. You will use your research to design the costumes to meet the specific needs of your specified characters for the production, taking into consideration: - - Genre may include but is not limited to – ballet, period drama, choreographed music video, poi. Style may include but is not limited to – dance, kapa haka, drama, music performance, moving image production, physical theatre, devised work, performance art. Specified character means a role or image created for a specified performance context such as dance, kapa haka, drama, music performance, moving image production, physical theatre, fashion show, devised work, performance art. The text used and the performance context the candidate is being assessed in must be specified by the teacher/tutor. Research and demonstrate safe working practices at all times You will meet with the groups and directors of each scene and make notes on the scenes and characters as required for designing their costumes You will have the opportunity to examine the equipment and resource supplies in the drama department. You will use what you need and liaise with directors and cast to source what else is needed. You will work as a part of a team, with the directors, actors and technical team to mount the production for an invited audience in the Jack Paine Centre. Perform your role 1. Research and create a list of appropriate technical language - (specialised vocabulary) associated with the features and functions of costumes and their specific requirements Range: costume requirements may include but are not limited to – cost; appearance on stage such as – colour, shine, texture; safety; fabric types and effects; quality of construction; special effects; historical or cultural accuracy; research of a minimum of five costuming requirements is required. 2. Create a annotated design of each of your specified characters that visually communicates in sufficient detail to allow the realisation of the costume. Range: visual communication may include but is not limited to – hand drawing, annotated journal, collage, multi-media presentation (2D or 3D); detail may include but is not limited to – annotated specifications of colour, texture, material(s); close-up of particular detail(s) of the costume. 3. Make a list/s of what costumes and accessories are required 4. Work with directors and cast to acquire / source everything required. 5. Take part in technical and dress rehearsals 6. Support the show from backstage: organising costumes and accessories as required 7. After the show, tidy up and return all equipment.
