Name _______________________________ Date _____________ Per. ______ # _____ Solar System Project Our solar system consists of planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and dwarf planets that orbit the sun. Of those celestial bodies, only the Earth is known to sustain life. What features does the Earth have that make it suitable for you and me? Is it possible for us to live on other planets or celestial bodies? The Research You will each be assigned a planet, dwarf planet, or moon. 1. To start save this document to your computer. 2. Then log into your Google Drive and upload it. 3. Then right lick and select open with and choose Google doc. 4. Then rename it and share it with me and your partners. My google email address is [email protected] 5. When sharing projects, rename them by your class color and then by your names. Example: Blue Mary B, Joe R, Bob S 6. Once you have done this, remove older versions so you don’t accidentally do your work on the wrong document. 7. Divide the work among your partners. 8. Research your planet. Focus your research on the features that make it suitable or not suitable for life. 9. The table provided will help guide your research. Learn all you can about it. Record all of your data in the table in this packet. Be sure to cite your source. You should be using bullet points. I will be monitoring your work through Google Drive. Sources:You must have at least 3 different sources and site them. No more than 6 sources should be used. Google is not a source. Wikipedia or other sites open to the public cannot be used. Cut and paste the URL in the box. Then write the source number next to each fact on the fact sheet #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 1 #6 Facts (Some of the data may not be available for some planets or moons. Get approval to leave it blank. ) Clear bullet points Do not copy and paste Source # Meaning of the name. History Who found it? When it was found? What is its position in the Solar System? Give planet order and distance from the sun in km. Give its size (diameter) in km. 2 Mass (kg) Give the gravity at the surface (m/s2). What is the shape of its orbit? Give the length of its year and day. rotational period- Earth hours orbital periodEarth days Atmosphere What gases surround the planet? Give the mean temperature in Celsius. Internal composition What is the planet made of? Does it have tectonic activity? Earthquakes? Volcanos? Moons How many and what are the names of the major moons? 3 Rings How many? What are they made of? Unusual features Tell me everything about your planet that makes it interesting. Examples: retrograde motion, magnetosphere, unusual tilt or rotation. Etc... Does it contain the elements necessary for living things? (Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulphur) Recommended websites: http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/index.cfm http://www.kidsastronomy.com/solar_system.htm http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/science/space-sci/solar-system/ http://nineplanets.org/ http://www.fofweb.com/Science/default.asp westwood westwood The Video Your job is to use knowledge of your planet, moon, etc… to teach the class about your planet/moon and by making a video that will portray it in a creative way. In class you will learn how to use Wevideo to edit your movie. If you need a camera, you can borrow one from the school. Let me know. You can choose from the list of projects below. I encourage you to challenge yourself however; you should choose a project that you feel you will succeed at. Feel free to modify them to best suit your needs or choose an original idea of your own. 4 We will begin the research in school and you will complete it at home. You will have about 2 weeks to complete the project in class and at home. Please use your rubric to be sure that you have completed all parts of the project and follow the schedule provided. I must approve all projects. Suggested Project Ideas 1. Create a song or rap about your planet, etc… and its place in the solar system. You will make a video recording of your rap song. You may invite other students to participate in your video. 2. Write a short story about a journey in a space craft to your planet. Describe what you encounter along the way and what you find when you get there. Create illustrations or act it out in a video. 3. News broadcast- Describe what you have learned about your planet/moon in detail as a news reporter on the scene of a breaking story. 4. Come up with your own creative way to showcase your planet. requirements of the rubric and make sure you get your idea approved.
