Day 3: The Periodic Table
Standards (SOL)
PS.1 The student will plan and conduct investigations in which
f) research skills are utilized using a variety of resources;
k) valid conclusions are made after analyzing data;
l) research methods are used to investigate practical problems and
questions;
n) an understanding of the nature of science is developed and
reinforced.
PS.4 The student will investigate and understand the organization and use of the
periodic table of elements to obtain information. Key concepts include
a) symbols, atomic number, atomic mass, chemical families (groups), and
periods
Objectives (UKD’s)
Understand The significance of atoms in the universe.
Know
The usefulness of the periodic table.
The definition of atomic mass.
The definition of atomic symbol.
The definition of atomic number.
Identify the different components of information on the periodic
Do
table.
Topic/Essential Question
What information can you gather from the periodic table?
Materials & Resources
Class set of computers or time in the computer lab.
A periodic table
Posters
Markers
Construction paper
Engage – Time Estimate: 20 minutes
Students will play a matching game online at
http://education.jlab.org/elementmatching/index.html. They will have to select
elements names with the atomic symbols provided.
Explore – Time Estimate: 20 minutes
Students will make a guide of how to read the information on any block on the
periodic table. The guide will include a picture of an example block with
information on each component (atomic number, atomic symbol, atomic mass).
Explain -- Time Estimate: 20 minutes
Each student will be assigned an element from the periodic table to make a
poster about. The poster will include:
1) The atomic symbol.
2) Information about the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in
each atom.
3) A model of the atom.
4) Historical information (such as who discovered it, if applicable, the
derivation of the name, etc.)
Extend -- Time Estimate: negligible
“Tomorrow you will be making a model of your particular element on the periodic
table using the information in its block.”
Evaluate -- Time Estimate: 3 minutes
Students will have a pre-made exit card with several atomic symbols on them
that they will have to write the names for.

Connections
In the previous lesson, students learned about different atomic models. In this
lesson, the students will learn about the information one can take from the
periodic table. In the next lesson, the class will be making another model of an
atom based on information from the periodic table and the introduction of the
different atomic models.
