STatistics Education Web (STEW)
STatistics Education Web (STEW) is an online resource for peer-reviewed lesson plans for K–
12 teachers.
Statistics and probability concepts are included in K–12 curriculum standards—particularly the
Common Core State Standards—and on state and national exams. STEW provides free peerreviewed teaching materials in a standard format for K–12 math and science teachers who teach
statistics concepts in their classrooms.
STEW lesson plans identify both the statistical concepts being developed and the age range
appropriate for their use. The statistical concepts follow the recommendations of the Guidelines
for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Report: A Pre-K-12 Curriculum
Framework, Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, and NCTM Principles and
Standards for School Mathematics. The lessons are organized around the statistical
problemsolving process in the GAISE guidelines: formulate a statistical question, design and
implement a plan to collect data, analyze the data by measures and graphs, and interpret the data
in the context of the original question. Teachers can navigate the STEW lessons by grade level
and statistical topic.
Submit a Lesson Plan
Consider submitting your favorite lesson plans to STEW and encouraging your colleagues to do
the same. STEW needs your participation to be a growing resource for statistics and probability
teachers.
Lesson plans should follow the standard STEW template. Example plans include the following:
Send lesson plans to [email protected] for publication consideration.

STEW Editor and Associate Editors
STEW operates similar to an ASA journal. It has an editorial board consisting of an editor and
associate editors. Authors submit proposed activities to the editor according to a template
prepared for that purpose. The editor has the responsibility of determining which material meets
the guidelines for posting on the website. Generally, this is done by passing the material to an
associate editor for review and comments.
The ASA/NCTM Joint Committee on Curriculum in Probability and Statistics (K–12) is
responsible for appointing an editor for the STatistics Education Web (STEW). If you are
interested in being an associate editor to review articles, send your name, email address, and a
brief description of your qualifications to [email protected].
Editor: Hollylynne Lee, North Carolina State University
Associate Editors: Carol Joyce Blumberg (Winona State University, Retired), Stephanie Casey
(Eastern Michigan University), Susan Friel (The University of North Carolina), Leigh Johnson
(Capital University), Gemma Mojica (The University of North Carolina), Jennifer Nickell (North
Carolina State University), and Amy Wagler (The University of Texas at El Paso)
Copyright
Authors maintain copyright of their published material in STEW. Any person requesting
permission to use materials from a STEW lesson in a publication must obtain permission from
the author of the lesson. Copyright transfers to STEW at the time of the author's demise.
The American Statistical Association/National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Joint
Committee oversees STEW. In that capacity, the Joint Committee recommends that authors and
STEW require of those that request permission to use their lessons in a publication a signed
document that guarantees that the author and STEW will be properly credited in the publication.
