EECS Research Overview MSc Project Proposals MSc Project Proposals Kamyar Mehran Lecturer in Power Engineering School of EECS Queen Mary University of London October 23rd, 2016 EECS Research Overview MSc Project Proposals Energy efficiency in home environment Control of fastswitching dc-d converters Energy storages and Electro-chemical battery packs Calibration of IC engines using multi-sensory fusion EECS Research Overview Msc Project Proposals Battery energy storage system (BESS) for Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) application Residential Grid Storage: o o o Benefit homeowners by storing electricity generated from solar/ wind High demand can be shifted to off-peak hours in the grid Resolving the grid instabilities caused by renewable sources SimpliPhi Lithium-iron-phosphate Lightweight battery system for homes Vehicle to Grid: VEHICLE TO GRID V2G o o o Fast Charging of vehicular batteries in homes Selling the extra electricity to the grid Storing the extra capacity in vehicular batteries GRID TO VEHICLE G2V EECS Research Overview Msc Project Proposals Battery energy storage system (BESS) for Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) application Project: o The capital cost of battery packs is a major obstacle and one solution is to use aged battery packs from electrical vehicles. o Aging can change characteristics such as the internal resistance, capacity and efficiency of the battery pack. o Bi-directional dc-dc converters used to connect the battery pack to the rest of the system may become unstable as well. EECS Research Overview Msc Project Proposals Battery energy storage system (BESS) for Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) application Interesting aspects in the project: o Stability of the power converter is studied subject to variation in internal voltage and resistance of the battery pack. o Simulation of the integrated (battery pack, converter) system in MATLAB/Simulink o Real-time analysis of the integrated system in dSPACE real-time simulator using hardware-in-the-loop methodology to validate the results dSPACE real-time simulator – SCALEXIO – located in Power and Control Laboratory in EECS EECS Research Overview Msc Project Proposals o Monitoring the energy usage in home environment to lower the energy cost. o Using wireless sensors/actuators network for home appliances, one can monitor and measure the energy consumption via a realtime network interface. o An intelligent agent is designed to recognize autonomously (using machine learning) the user behaviour towards energy usage and to make decision to lower the energy cost. o Situational awareness (SA) enables very lowlatency and high-throughput monitoring, archiving, reporting, querying, and visualization of the state of a complex, dynamic system through a sensor network. Wireless energy Management for home environment using Situational Awareness (SA) EECS Research Overview Msc Project Proposals Wireless energy Management for home environment using Situational Awareness (SA) Interesting aspects: o Power (RMS) measurement of individual devices o Sensor/Antenna/actuator network design to sense the environment (Devices, Human, Renewables, Batteries) and send the commands to the environment (actuators) o Protocols/architecture design of SA system o Security: Game theory o Ad-hoc network (MAC layer, Physical layer) o Routing o Design o Optimal Control/Adaptive Dynamic Programming for optimizing the sensor network o Machine Learning to interpret human behaviour towards the devices o Intelligent Agents (as a part of SA system) to make decisions for power efficiency (switching on/off devices, controlling the renewable source) EECS Research Overview MSc project proposals Modelling of internal-combustion spark-ignition (SI) engine o Mathematical modelling of spark-ignition (SI) engine are essential for implementing the best engine control system, engine calibration and emission prediction. o Accurate modelling of mass flow, pressure and temperature in the famous 4-stroke engine is still a challenging problem. Interesting aspects: o Modelling of different parts of SI engine in MATLAB based on the thermo-dynamics and mass-flow dynamical equations. o Dynamic behaviour modelling of axial parts of engine, i.e. air-path system, turbo-charger. o Real-time analysis of the integrated system in dSPACE real-time simulator using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) methodology to validate the results. EECS Research Overview Msc Project Proposals • • • Hyperloop, the future transportation The Hyperloop is an open-source idea proposed by the futurist Elon Musk as an alternative mode of transportation to significantly reduce the travel time and cost for inter-city journeys. The first Hyperloop will be between Los Angeles and San Francisco reducing the travel time to only 30 minutes with a total estimation of 840 passengers per hour. Currently many student competitions have formed to propose the best solution for Hyperloop system. Developed by Mr Hariras Tongyai, one of my UG project students. EECS Research Overview Msc Project Proposals Hyperloop, the future transportation o Building a mechanical system, i.e. a motor system, to achieve levitation and propulsion through either Air Bearings or Electromagnetic Levitation. o A motor controller is needed to regulate the motor system through a control panel/program communicating with the capsule via wireless communications (TCP). Interesting aspects in the project: o Motor drive control system design using a micro-controller o software GUI design and coding o mechanical design/3D printing o hardware design (capsule, tube) and integration o Network/communication system design o CAD/CAM design and modelling in Matlab/Simulink. Developed by Mr Hariras Tongyai, one of my UG project students. EECS Research Overview Msc Project Proposals Nonlinear behaviour and control of DC-DC converters • • • DC-DC converters are widely used converters that its application spans from high-voltage national grid to all sorts of home appliances, PCs and laptops. Due to large variation of input voltage or current, the converter response may become chaotic (non-linear and non-periodic) This project is for regulating the response of the converter such that the converter operates in its normal period-1 switching response. Interesting aspects in the project: o dc-dc converter modelling in MATLAB/Simulink o Stability & bifurcation analysis o Nonlinear and Chaos Control. o Employing Fuzzy Logic Control (or other type of intelligent control) The control approach can be implemented on FPGA or Microcontroller to check the simulation results in an experimental setup.
