Conditional Statements Day 1
ENTRY TASK
• What is the hypothesis of this statement:
• If two angles are vertical, then they share a vertex.
• What is the conclusion of this statement
• If a woman is Hungarian, then she is European
Learning Targets
• I understand what a conditional statement is
• I understand the parts of a conditional statement
• I can find the truth value of a conditional statement
Success Criteria
• I can analyze a conditional statement and state the truth
value.
• What is a conditional statement?
• An if-then statement
What is the hypothesis of this statement?
What is the conclusion of this statement?
If a shape has three sides,
then it is a triangle.
SYMBOLS
• We use symbols to represent different parts of logical statements:
• For an if-then conditional statement we use 𝒑 to represent the
hypothesis and 𝒒 to represent the conclusion.
• To signify that it is a conditional statement we say:
𝑝 →𝑞
Which reads:
If p then q, or
p implies q
VENN DIAGRAMS
• We also use venn diagrams.
• If we wanted to represent the conditional statement:
• If you live in Kent, then you live in Washington.
Residents of Washington
Residents of Kent
WRITING CONDITIONAL
STATEMENTS
• Vertical angles share a vertex.
If two angles are vertical angles, then they share a
vertex
TRUTH VALUE
• A statement is either true or false.
• In order for a conditional statement to be true, every time the hypothesis is
true, the conclusion is also true.
Give the truth value of these statements:
If a woman is Hungarian, then she is European.
TRUE
If a number is divisible by 3, then it is odd.
FALSE

value.

Answer the first two questions on you own. The third question is the answer to this
question.
• What is the truth value of this statement
If two angles form a linear pair, then they are supplementary.
