NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1.
Am I able to explain the three Newton’s
Laws of Motion?
2.
Can I relate these laws to Sporting
examples?
BLP HABITS

Imagining and Noticing
STARTER
1.
What has a foot but no legs?
2.
Poor people have it. Rich people need it. If you eat it
you die. What is it?
3.
What comes down but never goes up?
4.
I’m tall when I’m young and I’m short when I’m old.
What am I?
5.
Mary’s father has 5 daughters – Nana, Nene, Nini,
Nono. What is the fifth daughters name?
STARTER
1.
A snail
2.
Nothing
3.
Rain
4.
A candle
5.
If you answered Nunu, you are wrong. It’s
Mary!
STARTER 2

Explain the following terms with examples:
Linear Motion
 Angular Motion
 General Motion
 Force

TASK

Write sporting examples for the following:
 Cause
a body at rest to move
 Cause a moving body to change direction
 Cause a moving body to accelerate
 Cause a moving body to decelerate
 Change an object’s shape
EXAMPLES OF FORCE





Cause a body at rest to move (a Football will remain on the
penalty spot until force is applied to it by the player)
Cause a moving body to change direction (if a ball is
travelling towards the goal and the goalkeeper makes a save,
the force exerted by the keeper will push the ball away in
another direction)
Cause a moving body to accelerate (when running to take a
penalty the player starts running slowly and then gets faster by
applying more force on the ground)
Cause a moving body to decelerate (if the ball travels into
the goal it will hit the net, causing the ball to slow down)
Change an object’s shape (when a player kicks the ball, it
will temporarily change shape; as will the net when the ball
hits it)
NEWTON’S THREE LAWS OF
MOTION
NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION –
“LAW OF INERTIA”

“A body continues in a state of rest or
uniform velocity unless acted upon by an
external force”

Give an example of this in your chosen
Sport
NEWTON’S THREE LAWS OF
MOTION
NEWTON’S SECOND LAW OF MOTION –
“LAW OF ACCELERATION”

“When a force acts upon an object, the
rate of change of momentum experienced
by the object is proportional to the size of
the force and takes place in the direction in
which the force acts”

Give an example of this in your chosen
Sport
NEWTON’S THREE LAWS OF
MOTION
NEWTON’S THIRD LAW OF
MOTION – “ACTION/REACTION”

“For every action there is an equal and
opposite reaction”

Give an example of this in your chosen
Sport
