1. JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title:
Phlebotomist
2. JOB PURPOSE:
 To collect blood samples by venepuncture or capillary route from Locality
patients within the Practice.
3. ORGANISATIONAL POSITION:

4. SCOPE AND RANGE:




The safe accurate and efficient collection of blood samples from patients.
Post holder will be expected to work unsupervised although advice is available.
Accept referrals from a range of staff e.g. GP’s, consultants, midwives etc.
5. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:














Adherence to practice policies and procedures relevant to all areas of work
and regulatory requirements. These would include the following but may
not be limited:
Health and Safety Policy in particular Infection Control and needle stick
injury.
Patient Confidentiality Policy.
Risk Management.
Adherence to Information Governance policies and current data protection
legislation.
All Standard Operating Procedures.
Quality Management.
Manage time and resources effectively in carrying out the duties of this
post.
Respond to question and enquiries. If unable to assist, direct enquiries to
the appropriate staff member.
Collection venous blood samples from patients using a variety of blood
collection system and techniques at practice.
Train new staff and other staff groups in phlebotomy when required.
Regular cleaning and decontamination of trolleys and bench surfaces.
Maintain records in compliance with policy and the Data Protection Act.
Safe disposal of specimens, needles and other consumables.
6. EQUIPMENT & MACHINERY:




Phlebotomy trolley with associated stocks.
Operation of photocopiers, printers and scanners.
Emergency equipment.
Blood collection sets.
7. SYSTEMS:


Comply with Clinical Governance standards.
Collating audit data.
8. DECISIONS & JUDGEMENTS:

Compliance with established acceptance and rejection criteria for matching
patient requests and samples.
 Compliance with all related NHS Lanarkshire Policies and procedures.
 Make decisions on identification and suitability of samples for laboratory
procedures.
9. COMMUNICATIONS & RELATIONSHIPS:
 Communicate with Patients.
 Participates in training of less experienced personnel.
 Communicates enquiries or complaints from patients and visitors and
communicate effectively with colleagues from a range of disciplines.
 Communicate with patients and relatives in a sensitive and professional manner
providing reassurance and support where appropriate.
 Communicates with specimen transportation providers.
 Attend Team Meetings.
 Attends courses for personal and professional development.
10. DEMANDS OF THE JOB:
PHYSICAL
 Driving.
 Stand/ walk/ twist/turn/stoop/stretch/kneel while attending to clients in
variety of settings.
 Carry clinical equipment.
 Carry non clinical equipment
SKILLS
 Venepuncture.
MENTAL
 Aggression can be experienced whilst dealing with non compliant/distressed
clients.
 Post holder may be required to respond in crisis situation.
 Absolute concentration and co-ordination required during specimen collection
and labelling.
EMOTIONAL
 Frequent exposure to a variety of emotions when dealing with
distressed/anxious/worried patients/carers.
 Dealing with patients with challenging behaviour.
 Communicating with distressed/worried/anxious/clients/carers
 Dealing with complaints and reporting same to senior staff.
WORKING CONDITIONS
 Frequently works in isolation.
 Working with infectious blood.
 Manual handling of blood containers.
11. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB:







Coping with increases in activity especially during winter months.
Taking samples from highly infectious patients.
Dealing with Patients with poor veins and deciding best access.
Dealing with difficult patients.
Communicating with very ill patients or patients with mental health problems.
Exposure to verbal aggressive behaviour and potential physical aggression.
Reassuring patients with needle phobias.
12. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE
JOB:





A certificate in venepuncture is essential.
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology is required.
Previous experience preferred.
High awareness of Infection Control policies and procedures.
Manual dexterity essential.
Maintenance of CPR training.
