Cycles Nitrogen Cycle Questions you should be able to answer: What is the order of the nitrogen cycle? How do humans impact the nitrogen cycle? What is a key player in the nitrogen cycle, and what would occur with a decrease in the organisms? Nitrogen cycle explained: Plant receive nitrogen from the atmosphere through nitrogen fixing bacteria on the roots of plants. The nitrogen (Nitrates) helps the plants with growth process and are latter found in the plants cells. Elk receive nitrogen plant after it eat or if the plant die the nitrogen will return to the soil though decay. After eating the plants elk Pee and poo, which contain nitrogen in the form of ammonia that is broken down by bacteria into nitrates. Nitrates are then either used by plants for growth or it returns to the atmosphere. Cougar eats the elk Left over elk decomposes into (Nitrates) through dentifying bacteria returning it to the atmosphere. Nitrogen can returns to soil and Absorbs to plant through nitrogen fixing bacteria. Nitrogen in the atmosphere can only leave the atmosphere when it is absorbed by bacteria know as nitrogen fixing bacteria. This bacteria lives on the roots of plants, the plants them use this nitrogen to grow. Bacteria is key player, decrease numbers of bacteria mean decrease in plants being successful, because they do not have sufficient nutrients to grow. The decrease will also impact the amount of material that can be decayed because bacteria holds are large role in this process as well Human impact: fertilizer, contamination of soil, less plants for less is absorbed from the atmosphere and some explanation. Nitrogen Cycle Carbon Cycle Example diagram/ flow chart if mention molecules I would add that piece to the area like Photosynthesis (put formula) Carbon cycles through the system using the process of photosynthesis and respiration. In these process Carbon molecule moves from the form of carbon dioxide (CO2) to sugar(C6H12O6) in Photosynthesis to Sugar which is then processed in respiration with the presence O2 back into Carbon dioxide (CO2)and water(H2O) needed for photosynthesis. Formulas The power of 3 Photosynthesis Input Outputs Matter Matter Energy Matter Matter Energy 6CO2 + 6H2O + Light Energy --- C6H12O6 + 6O2 + ATP Energy Respiration Input Outputs Matter Matter Energy Matter Matter Energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 + ATP Energy --- 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP Energy Combustion C6H12O6 + 6O2 + Heat(Spark) --- 6CO2 + 6H2O +(Various) Energy What you should see: The inputs for the photosynthesis become the outputs for respiration. The formula makes a system. The inputs for respiration are the output from photosynthesis. The formula of photosynthesis and respiration form a x when you look at them vertically (write in from board). The formula for combustion and respiration has similar: Output , Need energy to start reaction, both have energy transferring to another form. Differences: Use different fuel, output different amounts of energy, use different amount of O2 for there reactions, and are found in different area(ex. Cell vs. Cars) Carbon cycle explain: The gases of O2 and Carbon Dioxide are found in the atmosphere and must be taken into the organism. While the process of photosynthesis occurs in the plants only(in the chloroplast of the cell). The process of respiration occurs in both animals and plants (in the mitochondria of the cell) of in the system. Carbon is also cycled through he system through the decay of living materials. This carbon is in the biomolecule that make up the living materials such as in cells and enzymes. The carbon is returned from these cell when the molecule are broken down (decay) also completed by bacterial process and enzymes. Carbon is not only in put into the atmosphere through respiration of organisms, but from the burning of the fossil fuels by humans. This input into the atmosphere makes the recycle of CO2 more difficult. Also the removal of tree or algae from any part of the system will keep the atmospheric CO2 at a high level because it is to being recycled through the plants cell to make energy. This build up of CO2 can lead what is know as the green house effect which causes the temperature of the planet to increase. Questions you should be able to answer: What is the formulas for respiration and photosynthesis? What Happens if more Carbon dioxide enters the system by the burning of fossile fuels? What is a man made problem that affects the carbon cycle and explain it affect? What happens if more algae in the ocean die off? How does the inputs and output of matter and energy in each formula transfer from one form to another? What is the green house effect? Food Web and Food Chain Example diagram Question you should be able to answer: What is the Oreo Effect? What happens if you remove green plants? What happen if you remove kites? What happen if you remove the rabbit and mouse? What happens if habitat is destroyed to a food web?
