8.EE.7
2012
Domain: Expressions and Equations
Cluster: Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
Standards: 8.EE.7.a: Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no
solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms,
until an equivalent equation of the form x=a, a=a, or a=b results. ( a and b are different numbers).
Essential Questions
Why do you write
equations?
Enduring Understandings
An equation can be written to
represent a given situation.
How can you solve a multistep equation?
Inverse operations are used to
solve equations.
Content Statements
Solve one- step equations
with rational numbers.
Solve two-step linear
equations with rational
numbers coefficients.
Write and solve two- step
linear equations with
rational number
coefficients.
Activities, Investigation, and Student Experiences
Use algebra tiles or other manipulatives (Hershey Kisses,
Gummy Bears, apples, oranges, etc) to model algebraic
expressions and assist with solving equations.
Use a flowchart and show how to find the starting number, you
have to work backwards. Same as directions.
Ex: start with a number
Add 3.4
The result is -2.9
5x + 3x -8 = 24 (one solution)
5(x+3) -4 = 2(x+2) + 3x -6 (no solution) Have students discover
and understand that there is no value for z that will satisfy the
equation.
Start simple:
4x + 4x = 8x
8x = 8x
x=x

Tamara can mow
acre in one hour. If her yard is 2
acres, how many hours will it take her to mow the entire
yard? (5)

Provide students with equations similar to the above examples.
Also provide students with a die or spinner that correlate to each
equation. Allow students to draw their own conclusions about
the solutions.
The cost for a new cell phone plan is $39 per month plus
a one-time start up fee of $78. If you are charged $1014,
how many months will the contract last? (24)

Domain: Expressions and Equations
Cluster: Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
Standards: 8.EE.7.b: Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require
expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms.

Activities, Investigation, and Student Experiences
Using balance and iconic forms of algebra tiles, demonstrate
how to solve equations using given parameters. Model how to
use tiles and then have pairs of students each create example and
share with other students to solve.
Use 2 columns to justify each step of equation. Solve using
appropriate property of equality.
