Classification
The systemic arrangement of living world into
different
categories
according
to
different
characteristics is called classification.
Classification is the only way to know the structure and
nature of such huge number of animals. Morphological
characteristics of the animal, similarity and dissimilarity
among them and their interrelationship are the basis of
classification.
Porifera
General Characteristics
(1) They are simplest multicellular animal.
(2) Body wall with numerous pores. Through these
pores food and oxygen enters into the body.
(3) There is no compact tissue, organ and organ
system.
Examples: Spongilla, Scypha

Cnideria
General Characteristics
(1) Body consists of two embryonic layers. The
outer one is ectoderm and the inner one is
endoderm.
(2) Their body cavity is known as coelenteron.
It helps in digestion and circulation.
(3) Ectoderm bears a special type of cells called
cnidoblast. These cells help in locomotion, defense,
capture of prey etc.
Example: Hydra, Obelia

Body Structure of Hydra
Platyhelminthes
General characteristics
(1) Body is flat, bisexual and mostly parasitic.
(2) Body is covered with cuticle.
(3) Body bears sucker and hooks.
Example: Liver Fluke, Tape Worm

Cuticle
Nematoda
General characteristics
(1) Body is tubular (cylindrical) and covered with
thick skin.
(2) Digestive system is complete. Mouth and anus
are present.
(3) Respiratory and circulatory system are absent.
(4) Generally unisexual.
(5) Body cavity is without lining and true coelom is
absent.
Example: Round worm, filaria worm.
