A1 Title, Medium and Price: Subtle, Fiber, $220.00 Size in inches: 18 long, 10 wide, 9 deep Award: First Place in the category Adult Craft Artist: Martha B. Cowden Dayton, Ohio Description: The artist has created a woven cylindical form out of rough-textured fibers. One end is closed, so the piece could function as a container for dried flowers. The form is woven of grayish brown fibers. The fibers look as though they are the natural color of the material, rather than dye-colored, because they have light and dark streaks instead being one uniform color throughout. The artist has attached round forms, about two inches in diameter, to the outside of the tall cylinder, for added texture. These are various shades of brown: beige, dark brown and tan. A2 Title, Medium and Price: Geometric Puzzle, Wood, Not for sale Size in inches: 9 long, 9 wide, 1 deep Award: Second Place in the category Adult Craft Artist: Verne R. Sanford Valparaiso, Indiana Description: Light and dark wood pieces have been shaped to create a puzzle. The pieces of wood are very smooth and well-crafted. The perimeter of the puzzle is a square. There is one small light square in each corner of the larger square. A triangle fills the spaces between each square, with its flat edge against the outer rim of the puzzle and its point facing inward toward the center. This arrangement of squares and triangles creates an open space in the center that is shaped like an x. This x-shaped space is filled with eight pieces of dark wood that are shaped so they come to a point in the center of the puzzle. She appears to be sitting with her legs tucked under her body. She is holding one pot in her lap, while several other rest on the ground in front of her knees. She is looking down toward the pot in her lap, but you cannot see much of her face because of the large round hat she wears. The sculpture looks very graceful because of the way the artist has used rounded shapes and smooth edges. The hat, the pots, the bottom of the woman's skirt and even the curve of her arms contribute to the smooth lines that join the parts of the figure so that they flow gracefully into each other. B6 Title, Medium and Price: Schooner, Mixed media, $385.00 Size in inches: 24 long, 18 wide, 3 deep Artist: Zena Reubel School: Braille Institute, Los Angeles, California Description: The artist has created a picture of a ship on the ocean from clay and fiber. The sky behind the ship and the water beneath it are flat, but they have an interesting tactile quality because they are made of small colored tiles held together by plaster. The ship is shown with sails unfurled. The white clay sails and the brown hull are sculpted so that they are raised about three inches above the surface of the background. The hull of the boat is covered with a plant fiber that reminds one of the texture of wood. Some of the waves in the ocean are sculpted so that they rise above the flatter surface of the rest of the water. The ship looks as though it is moving very rapidly through the waves. The boy is drawn on the right center portion of the picture. His chin rests on his hands and he has stuck out his tongue in disgust. A smiling girl is seated a couple of rows of behind and to the left of the boy. She has cupped her head in her hands and is leaning to one side.
