Grade HS Smarter Balanced Assessment Item Specifications Fact Sheet Claim 1 ‐ Target I: Solve equations and inequalities in one variable. Content Domain: Algebra Claim 1 Priority Cluster Standards Assessed in Target I: A‐REI.3: Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters. A‐REI.4: Solve quadratic equations in one variable. a. Use the method of completing the square to transform any quadratic equation in x into an equation of the form ( – )2 = that has the same solutions. Derive the quadratic formula from this form. b. Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for 2 = 49), taking square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize when the quadratic formula gives complex solutions and write them as ± for real numbers a and b. Achievement Level Descriptors Level 1 Students should be able to solve one‐step linear equations in one variable. Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Students should be able to solve one‐step linear inequalities and quadratic equations in one variable with integer roots. Students should be able to solve multi‐step linear equations and inequalities and quadratic equations in one variable with real roots. Students should be able to solve quadratic equations in one variable with complex roots. Construct‐Relevant Vocabulary completing the square, quadratic equation, quadratic formula, square root Allowable Stimulus Materials linear equation with one variable, linear inequality with one variable, number line solution to a linear inequality, quadratic equation in one variable Allowable Tools None.
