Prepared Study Reports on: ‘Development of Freshwater fisheries in these countries in
a more sustainable way: Trade aspects’
Study included evaluations on:

Preparedness of the regions fisheries to meet EU standards (HACCP, etc), and aspects
requiring addressing at both enterprise level and government structures.

‘Development of Major East African lakes in a more sustainable way: Trade aspects’ Study
involved lakes Victoria, Kyoga (Uganda), Tanganyika (Tanzania, DR Congo, Zambia and
Burundi), Turkana (Kenya and Ethiopia) , July-Sept 2004
UNCTAD / ITC GENEVA;
Study report: A two-week study survey and visits to European Fish value addition and trade
chain, and its linkages with fishery products from Kenya. Study involved value chain analysis,
and preparation of a diagnostic report on the state of fisheries industry in Kenya. Outputs
included a Fisheries diagnostic report, and a strategic plan for enhancing Kenyan Exports
PROJECT EVALUATION EXPERIENCE:
Project Evaluation of a regional (southern Africa) fisheries marketing project (INFOSA)– for
the donor organization (NORAD) against project objectives and efficacy. The project is on fish
value addition, standards, and marketing and the consultancy involved travelling to Tanzania,
Namibia, South Africa, Mozambique and Malawi. Project commissioned by Norad, and involved
three international experts (Dr Mbithi, Dr Goulding, Prof Roth). January 2006.
FEASIBILITY STUDY EXPERIENCE
Danida, Denmark (PSD program)– Hvalspund. Project. Valuation (feasibility study) of the
potential for cage-aquaculture in Lake Victoria, Kenya. Study involved pond and cage designs,
and fish feed mill establishment around the lake. Project involved Ole Kieregaard (lead project
consultant) and Dr Mbithi. March 2006
FOREIGN GOVERNMENT ADVISORY SERVICES ON TRADE
Assigned (by DFID) to advice Government of Namibia in the two ministries on fisheries Trade
and Development. Outputs include development of suitable negotiating positions for fisheries
trade in negotiations with the EU, USA, MERCOSUR and SADC. This involves preparation of
Namibia fisheries diagnostic documents on trade (Rules of Origin, WTO issues and EPA with
the EU, and analysis of various negotiating options.
