Biotin also known as vitamin H or coenzyme R, is a
water-soluble B-vitamin (vitamin B7). Biotin is
necessary for cell growth, the production of fatty
acids, and the metabolism of fats and amino acids.
There is a professional requirement that where a
product is ordered on a prescription, a pharmacist
must supply a product with a marketing
authorization, where such a product exists and is
available, in preference to an unlicensed medicine.
Metoject Pen® presents in the following strength
single pens:
7.5mg/0.15ml
10mg/0.2ml
12.5mg/0.25ml
15mg/0.3ml
17.5mg/0.35ml
20mg/0.40ml
22.5mg/0.45ml
25mg/0.50ml
27.5mg/0.55ml
30mg/0.60ml
The change in device requires a
different technique for the patients to
self administer and as such there is
some patient education material to
reflect this, please visit

Viteyes® products
Viteyes® products are changing:
Vitamins in Age Related Macular Degeneration:
Older Viteyes® products are being
discontinued over the coming months
and these products need to be switched
to the newer formulations:
Local guidance was to reflect recent trial evidence it was agreed that these may be prescribed locally
(although unlicensed) for a very specific group of
patients in whom there is some evidence of benefit.
Specifically, patients with ‘category 4’ disease who
have advanced disease in one eye only (advanced
lesions or visual acuity <20/32).

‘Viteyes 2 formula’ is the preferred product as it is
least expensive and contains the correct
combination of vitamins and zinc. Prescribing in
‘category 4’ patients normally initiated on
secondary care advice, but patients may opt to
purchase these OTC.
