Final Exam Nine
14) List and briefly describe the work of ten environmental advocacy organizations (like
Greenpeace, and the Sierra Club). Conclude by describing which two organizations you would
support with your time and money – explaining your selection.
1,The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
It is a scientific intergovernmental body, set up at the request of member government. It was
first established in 1988 by two United Nations organizations, the World Meteorological
Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and later
endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 43/53. Its mission is to
provide comprehensive scientific assessments of current scientific, technical and socioeconomic information worldwide about the risk of climate change caused by human activity, its
potential environmental and socio-economic consequences, and possible options for adapting
to these consequences or mitigating the effects.
2, The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
It is an international institution (a programme, rather than an agency of the UN) that
coordinates United Nations environmental activities, assisting developing countries in
implementing environmentally sound policies and practices. It was founded as a result of the
United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in June 1972 and has its headquarters
in the Gigiri neighborhood of Nairobi, Kenya. UNEP also has six regional offices and various
country offices.
3, The Earth System Governance Project
It is a long-term, interdisciplinary social science research programme developed under the
auspices of the International Human Dimensions program on Global Environmental Change,
and started January 2009. It will conclude in 2018. The aim of the Earth System Governance
Project is to address with cutting-edge science the large, complex challenge of governance in
the face of intensifying global environmental change and earth system transformation, and to
create a better understanding of the role of institutions, organizations and governance
mechanisms by which humans currently regulate their relationship with the natural
environment and global biochemical systems.
4, The Global Environment Facility (GEF)
It unites 182 member governments — in partnership with international institutions,
nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector — to address global environmental
issues.it is an independent financial organization, the GEF provides grants to developing
countries and countries with economies in transition for projects related to biodiversity, climate
change, international waters, land degradation, the ozone layer, and persistent organic
pollutants.
5, The European Environment Agency (EEA)
It is an agency of the European Union (EU). Its task is to provide sound, independent
information on the environment. It is a major information source for those involved in
developing, adopting, implementing and evaluating environmental policy, and also the general
public. The EEA is governed by a Management Board composed of representatives of the
governments of its 32 member states, a European Commission representative and two
scientists appointed by the European Parliament, assisted by a committee of scientists.
6, Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia or PEMSEA
It is a regional partnership programme implemented by the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP) and executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
The project, started in 1994, was originally known as Prevention and Management of Marine
Pollution in the East Asian Seas (SDS-SEA). Every three years, PEMSEA hosts the East Asian Seas
Congress that consists of a Ministerial Forum, an International Conference and other events.
The conference focuses on tracking progress of SDS-SEA, encourages knowledge exchange and
raises important issues regarding coastal management in the region.
7, Greenpeace
It is a non-governmental environmental organization with offices in over forty countries and
with an international coordinating body in Amsterdam, the Netherlands Greenpeace states its
goal is to "ensure the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity” and focuses its
campaigning on worldwide issues such as global
warming, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling and anti-nuclear issues. Greenpeace
uses direct action, lobbying and research to achieve its goals. The global organization does not
accept funding from governments, corporations or political parties, relying on 2.9 million
individual supporters and foundation grants. Greenpeace has a general consultative status in
the United Nations Economic and Social Council and is a founding member of the INGO
Accountability Charter; an international non-governmental organization that intends to foster
accountability and transparency of non-governmental organizations.
8, The Friends of Nature
The work of the Friends of Nature rests on the conviction that people's opportunities of
personal development are inextricably linked with the protection of nature and the
conservation of natural resources. Hence, the Friends of Nature have, since their inception,
taken a stand for the conservation of an environment worth living in, for peace and
international understanding, for the social and democratic rights of all people, and for a
meaningful organization of leisure time. Building on their century-old tradition, the Friends of
Nature are nowadays committed to the implementation of sustainable development, in
particular to trans-boundary environmental solutions and to an environmentally and socially
sound tourism.
9, Earth watch Institute
It is an international non-profit organization that was founded in 1971 near Boston (USA) to
promote action and understanding necessary to sustain the Natural environment. The Earth
watch supports scientific field research and education by offering volunteers the opportunity
to join research teams around the world to collect field data in the areas such as wildlife
conservation, rainforest ecology, marine science and archaeology.
10, The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
It is an international organization dedicated to finding "pragmatic solutions to our most
pressing environment and development challenges". The organization publishes the IUCN Red
List, compiling information from a network of conservation organizations to rate which species
are most endangered.
Conclusion:
The first organization I will support is the Earth System Governance Project. Because the aim of
the Earth System Governance Project is to address with cutting-edge science the large, complex
challenge of governance in the face of intensifying global environmental change and earth
system transformation, and to create a better understanding of the role of institutions,
organizations and governance mechanisms by which humans currently regulate their
relationship with the natural environment and global biochemical systems. This aim is what I
want to explore and learn more about.
The second organization I will support is Greenpeace. Because it is a nongovernmental environmental organization with offices in over forty countries and with an
international coordinating body in Amsterdam, the Netherlands Greenpeace states its goal is to
"ensure the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity” and focuses its campaigning on
worldwide issues such as global warming, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling
and anti-nuclear issues. This organization covers a lot of countries and focus on a lot of
different kinds of issues, that is why I choose it.
