Proposal Subject: (One sentence overview of the proposal. Examples: change in title, prerequisite and description of NUR XYZ. Create new plan of
study in XYZ department, etc.)
This is a proposal to revise the General Sociology Option (UOS) Plan of Study: 1. Drop SOC 34000/PSY33900 “General Social
Psychology” as a required course. 2. Add Requirement Option: Either SOC 314 “Race and Ethnic Relations” OR SOC 411 “Social
Stratification”. 3. Drop SOC 24500 “Field of Sociology”. 4. Designation of other optional sociology classes at PUC. 5. Reduction in
number of electives.
Department approval: 11/26
Justification: (Explain the rationale for the proposed change.)
1. SOC 34000 (Social Psychology) is being dropped as a requirement because the course is currently taught without
sufficient sociological emphasis for it to continue as a requirement. Sociologists are unable to staff the course; however,
since it continues to be taught by psychologists, the course remains an optional course for the sociology major.
2. The requirement of taking either SOC 314 or SOC 411 will help provide both enhanced understanding of the
influence of social structures on social behavior and better preparation for majors taking our capstone course SOC 402,
Principles of Sociology.
3. SOC 24500 is being dropped due both to logistic challenges of offering a one credit course and to comply with the
Indiana mandated limit of 120 hours.
4. The designation of other optional sociology classes should serve to clarify the curriculum for sociology majors.
5. The number of electives is being reduced to comply with the Indiana mandated limit of 120 hours.

See proposed bingo sheet, Appendix B
Impact on Students: (Explain how students will be affected by the proposal. Benefits to students should be listed.)
These proposed changes to the sociology plan of study should better prepare sociology majors for their capstone courses. By listing
the variety of optional Sociology courses, including those with designated as Experiential Learning, the plan of study should help
sociology majors plan their courses of study.
Curriculum Proposal 1
Impact On Other Departments: (Explain how other academic departments may be affected by the proposal, and summarize any discussions with
other departments about the proposal. If adding or deleting a course, explain how other departments may be affected.)
The substitution of one required sociology plan of study course option (SOC 314 or SOC 411) for another required course (SOC
34000 / PSY 33900) should have no overall impact on Behavioral Science faculty resources. Sociology has sufficient faculty to teach
both required course options. There will be a reduction in the number of sections needed to teach PSY 39000, which is dual listed
with SOC 34000.
Impact on University Resources: (Curriculum changes affect university resources. Explain here how instructional, lab, computer or library
resources may be affected by the proposal. It is especially important to address the possible need for additional faculty.)
These proposed changes slightly reduce the need for elective courses and the need for staffing a one credit sociology course. The
substitution of one required sociology course for another should have no overall impact on faculty resources.
Impact on General Education Requirements: (If the proposal fulfills or changes general education requirements in your department, explain this
here.)
These proposed changes to the sociology plan of study should have no impact on General Education requirements.
