Honors Multi Cultures 1 Course Syllabus Honors Multi Cultures Mrs. Moore Room 121- extension 2121 [email protected] 2016-2017 Course Expectations and Requirements: Honors Multi Cultures Welcome to Multi Cultures! This course aims to provide students with a general overview of world history and western civilization from the beginnings of civilization through modern times. The main goal of this course is to demonstrate how history has impacted our world today. In addition, the course aims to give students the skills necessary to move on and be successful in Advanced Placement social studies courses. In terms of material, there is much to cover and therefore we move quickly. I look forward to an exciting and challenging year! Required text: Ellis and Esler, World History: Connections to Today. New Jersey: Prentice Hall, 2005. Students will have access to textbooks in the classroom but will be provided with a username and password to the online version for home use. If this presents a problem, please contact me so other arrangements can be made. Academic Expectations and Goals: 1. Develop and understanding of the major core concepts of world history 2. Understand the impact of past events on today’s society 3. Work cooperatively to solve problems and complete tasks both in and out of the classroom 4. Maintain an organized binder of course work 5. Learn the basic skills of research 6. Acquire and utilize historical thinking skills in a variety of ways 7. Maintain high ethical standards when conducting research and completing assignments Skills Focus: 1. Primary source analysis 2. Identifying point of view and how point of view affects history 3. Essay construction with a focus on thesis statements, evidence, and use of documents (DBQs) 4. Establishing an argument with use of evidence 5. Chart and data interpretation 6. Use of technology Course Policies 1. Attendance- Students are expected to attend class daily. The school attendance policy (which can be found in the student handbook) will be followed in regards to missed assignments a. Students should ask for missed assignments at the beginning of class or at an appropriate break b. Suggestion: find a homework buddy who can let you know what you’ve missed and check the folder in the front of the room 2. Homework- Homework will be assigned several times per week. All work will be graded and therefore should be considered individual work unless expressly stated otherwise. There will be NO late assignments accepted. 3. Projects/Papers- Several major projects and papers will be assigned throughout the year. There will be NO late projects/papers accepted. 4. Participation- Students are expected to participate in class and make relevant contributions to discussion. Participation will consist of: attendance and lateness issues, completion of in class work, contributions to discussion and behavior (positive and negative) Honors Multi Cultures 2 Course Syllabus 5. 6. Grading- Grades are determined on a points basis with weighted categories. The following categories and weights will be used to determine your marking period grade as per the district recommendation: a. Assessments- 70% i. This may include: Tests, Quizzes, Essays, Projects, etc. b. Classwork- 20% i. This may include: In class assignments, Projects, Essays, etc. c. Homework- 10% Academic Integrity- Students are expected to practice academic honesty regarding all homework, writing, group assignments, tests, quizzes, projects, etc. Those in violation will be held to the school’s academic integrity policy which can be found in the student handbook. Additional Information 1. You will need a binder specifically for this class. You will be required to keep it organized with materials readily accessible 2. If you cut class- You forfeit the opportunity to make up any missing work, tests, quizzes, etc. 3. As per Interboro’s policy, you are not permitted to use iPods or cell phones during class unless given permission. a. First offense- verbal warning b. Second offense- the phone will be taken and returned at the end of the class period c. Third offense- the phone will be taken to the main office for parent pick up My Personal Expectations 1. Be respectful of each other and the classroom that you are in 2. Be considerate: keep bags and belongings out of the rows, DO NOT PACK UP- I will let you know when to do so 3. Be in your seat when the bell rings 4. Come to class prepared and ready to learn 5. Come to me if you need extra help! Be proactive…don’t wait until it is too late!
