Which was greater: Athenian or Roman Citizenship-?
( Remember, only one “grabber”)

-Imagine 40,000 citizens, all completely equal, none higher in status than another with the
right to speak and vote on every issue facing society. That is true democracy( Doc D, “ The
Athenian Assembly”)
No two cities of the ancient world have made a greater contribution to the modern
political concepts of representative government and democracy than Athens and Rome. Yet
their views towards the concept of “citizenship” were quite different. For purposes of this
essay we will refer to “citizenship” as the following: the state of being vested with the rights,
privileges, and duties of a citizen or member of society. After reviewing several primary
source documents ( Athens/Rome ) is obviously the better place to have been a citizen.
