Welcome back! GEP CURRICULUM The first through fourth grade gifted education classes at Jacob G. Smith Elementary School will be using the William and Mary gifted curriculum and Prufrock Press curriculum. Both curriculums offer the rigor necessary to challenge gifted students. Fifth grade students are served in their classroom using the Advanced Content model. Hands on Equations (3-4) and Math Solve It (1-2) along with affective domain lessons will be used to further strengthen their logical, creative problemsolving and critical thinking skills. In addition to the district gifted curriculum, each gifted specialist will incorporate other topics of study & competitions that are of special interest to students and also support the Gifted Standards, Georgia Standards of Excellence, and the Core Knowledge Curriculum. 1st grade units: Gifts: Classic, quality literature will be used to learn the difference between gifts and presents. Students will identify their personal gifts as well as the gifts of others. Primarily Plants: Students explore plant growth; seeds, spores and more; plant needs; and plant parts. 4th grade units: PARENTS/GUARDIANS: Europe in the Middle Ages: Building on their knowledge of systems and life in ancient times, students will continue to research the life and the contributions during this time period. Acid, Acid Everywhere: Exploring Chemical, Ecological, and Transportation Systems Figurative Language: Students will “play” An excellent resource that will benefit your child is Khan Academy. http://www.khanacademy.org/about You may access this from home or the Live Oak Public Libraries. with language through various writing activities, expressing their personal ideas on a variety of topics. 2nd grade units: Ancient China: The Middle Kingdom- Systems and their importance to life begin this study of Ancient China. Students research the contributions of Ancient China and create personal artifacts Where is the Beach?: Examining Coastal Erosion Kim Harris Lead Gifted Specialist 1st/5th Cynthia Holmen Gifted Specialist 3 rd grade units: Ancient Egypt: Gifts of the Nile- Study of systems will continue as students research contributions of Ancient Egypt to our world today.
