Animation of Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery Through a
Lateral Thoracotomy (ThoraCAB)

Featuring:
Valluvan Jeevanandam, MD
Professor and Chief, Section of Cardiac & Thoracic Surgery
Unlike traditional open-heart surgery in which the sternum is cut and spread open, in a ThoraCAB
minimally-invasive procedure, we a make small incision at the side of the chest to gain access to the
heart to perform the surgery. We use the da Vinci Surgical System to obtain internal mammary
arteries for bypass graphs. The initial incision is extended to a total length of 3 to 5 inches. We
then use a rib retractor and operate directly on the heart.
