Passing grade for practical examinations is 80%. o Practical exams are graded according to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) EMT-Basic Psychomotor Skills Sheets. Students shall adhere to EVIT School Policy. Responsibility to obtain any missed work. See the Student Handbook for further information about attendance. Accumulation of excessive absences will result in the student not being eligible to take the final, practical or national certification exams. • Students must be registered for the class in order to attend. • Students who fail to attend the first class meeting must contact the instructor regarding the absence before the class meeting and may, at the option of the instructor, be withdrawn. • According to Arizona law, all students are expected to attend at least 90% of class time in order to receive credit. • Students are expected to attend all class and clinical experiences. • Students bear the responsibility of notifying the Counselor when they discontinue studies in a course. On-Time Performance: Teaching employability skills is an integral part of this class. It is essential to be in class, and on time. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain any work they missed due to a tardy. See the EVIT Student Handbook for further information about procedures and consequences for class tardiness. • Tardiness at the clinical site demonstrates unacceptable professional behavior. Therefore, students are not permitted to arrive at the clinical site late or leave early during the scheduled clinical hours without previous arrangements made with your instructor. Reading: Frequent reading assignments target improved reading comprehension. Writing: You will be expected to write reports including research reports. Communication Skills: You will gain skills and practice oral, non-verbal, and written communication skills. Employability skills: You will create a job portfolio including a resume and cover letter, complete a job application form, practice interviewing skills, and learn how to dress for success. Computer Skills: You will use the Internet; create PowerPoint presentations, and wordprocessed documents. Instructional Procedures • • • Lecture – 40% Skills Work and Activities – 51% Computer Lab – 9% Grading and Evaluation: The following grade point system is utilized: A 92 – 100% B 83 – 91% C 75 – 82% F 75% or less PARENTS PLEASE READ READ • • A student whose overall grade falls below a 75% will not pass this course. A student whose overall grade falls below an 80% will be counseled and possibly not be eligible for state or national testing. Testing • Quizzes and written tests are given throughout the week to assess knowledge. There is a final exam given at the end of the first semester (covering only the information from the first semester). The final exam given at the end of the second semester will be the course completion final (covering all from the first and second semester). • All make up tests are to be done the day the student returns to class. Assignments (Policy) • Make-up: Students missing class are responsible for getting any assignments missed from the instructor • Homework: Homework will very rarely be assigned; however, any work not completed in class will become homework. • Late Work: Late work will be accepted with a 50% deduction from the final grade PARENTS earned. (In other words the best you can get on a late assignment is 50%). After the PLEASE test has been given for a unit, work that is late for that unit will not be accepted (in READ other words students have until the day of the unit test to turn in any late work for that unit). Page 4 G:\Curriculum\Medical\Syllabus\EMT\EMT Syllabus 2016 2017.doc Emergency Medical Technician Handbook/Syllabus/Disclosure Partnership with Chandler-Gilbert Community College The EVIT EMT Program has an agreement in place with Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) to provide credit by evaluation. Once a student successfully completes the EMT program at EVIT and receives certification from the State of Arizona, they can contact the chairperson of CGCC Fire Science and EMT Department to make a formal request to receive credit for the EMT104 program offered at CGCC. EMT104 is currently an 8 credit hour program and may be a degree requirement in Fire Science. If interested in this option, please talk to your EVIT EMT Instructor first. Course Completion Requirements A. Program requirements, includes attendance at all class sessions, passing written and practical skills examinations, clinical rotation requirements, all of which must be completed to be eligible for graduation and application for Arizona certification. B. It is the responsibility of the student to complete the EMT-Basic Training program course, including final written and skills testing, and all clinical requirements within six months of the official course completion date to be eligible for application for Arizona certification. 1. Complete the EMT Program Final Exam with a passing grade of 75%. A student is allowed a maximum of three (3) attempts to pass the final written comprehensive examination. If the student does not attain a minimum passing grade on the third attempt, that student shall be considered ineligible to complete the program. 2. Complete all NREMT cumulative practical skills examinations with a passing grade of 80% for each skill. Meeting any of the critical criteria listed on the testing form shall result in automatic failure of that station, regardless of the total points accumulated. 3. The student is allowed a maximum of three (3) attempts to pass the practical skills examinations if the student does not attain a minimum passing grade on the third attempt, that student shall be considered ineligible to complete the program and will be issued a “F” grade. 4. In the event of course failure, the ineligible student shall reapply for acceptance and successfully complete an entire initial provider training program. 5. If a student does not successfully complete National Registry Examination Testing within 6 months of the official course completion date, he or she may have to enroll in an EMT-Basic Refresher course before faculty or staff of this program will sign the NREMT application form attesting to successful skills testing. No form with be postdated by anyone in this Department. 6. The student must be 18 years of age in order to become certified in the State of Arizona. Students will be permitted to take the state and national certification exams under the age of 18 but Arizona DHS BEMS will not issue an EMCT certification until age 18. Be advised there is an additional $40 fee with NREMT to convert results if the test was completed under the age of 18. At course completion, a printed certificate, and a completion of course will be available. Legal Limitations for Emergency Medical Technician Program: Admission or Completion from EVIT’s EMT program DOES NOT guarantee obtaining an Arizona EMT Certification and National Registry of EMT Certificate. Certification requirements and the subsequent procedures are the exclusive right and responsibility of the Arizona Department of Health - Bureau of Emergency Medical Services & Trauma System (http://www.azdhs.gov/preparedness/emergency-medical-services-trauma-system). Students will schedule themselves with NREMT ($80 included fee) I. Pass NREMT test (75% or better) J. Must be 18 years of age in order to become certified in the State of Arizona. Instructor Communication: Instructors can be contacted during regular school hours 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM. Note that during instructional time 7:30 – 10:35 AM and 12:05 – 2:35 PM the instructor is unavailable to answer the telephone. You may leave a message and the instructor will return your call. If there is an emergency you may call the receptionist at 480-461-4001 or 480-461-4000 and a message will be brought to the instructor’s class. General Information: • • • • Arizona DHS BEMS does not regulate or insure the financial viability of the program. If a student is exposed to a possible communicable disease during clinical/vehicular rotations, it is the student’s responsibility to pay for the screening exams. The Medical Director is responsible for the medical direction, final student evaluation and approval for certification testing by the Arizona Department of Health Services. Physical Agility: The EMT-Basic course is very active and physically demanding. In order to complete all the course competencies, skills testing and be eligible for certification, The student will need dexterity and range of motion to adequately accomplish application and removal of stabilization devices and the ability to lift up to 125lbs from the floor to waist-high; 250lbs with assistance. Inability to perform these activities may disqualify the applicant from both graduation and from the BLS training program and state certification. Current Arizona DHS BEMS requirements for the EMT-Basic certification are referenced and available in the Arizona Administrative code, Title 9 and are available for viewing. Page 6 G:\Curriculum\Medical\Syllabus\EMT\EMT Syllabus 2016 2017.doc Emergency Medical Technician Handbook/Syllabus/Disclosure Clinical/Vehicular Rotations: In addition to regular class attendance, each student must complete a minimum of 10 hours of clinical/vehicular assignments at an assigned hospital/agency. Student may elect to ask for an additional assignment clinical/vehicular at the discretion of the instructor. Students must meet the required objectives which include interview and assessment of a minimum of 10 patients; the document must be signed by the preceptor. A signed, satisfactory evaluation and all related documents must be presented to your EVIT EMT Instructor at the completion of the rotation. The student is responsible for collecting all signatures and returning all paperwork. This is a USDOT and Arizona DHS BEMS requirement. PARENTS PLEASE READ For the student’s protection and in compliance with hospital/agency agreement, the following must be completed prior to application and verified prior to clinical/vehicular rotations: 1. Completion of all immunization requirements 2. Negative urine drug screen Confirmation of positive result by a medical review officer will disqualify the student form the clinical/vehicular rotation and thus withdrawal from the course. Clinical/vehicular objectives: A. Only under the direct supervision of a preceptor, the EMT Basic student is expected to complete a minimum of ten (10) full patient assessments with a signature attesting to the validity of the documentation completed by the clinical preceptor. This is a USDOT and Arizona DHS BEMS requirement. If student does not attend a minimum of 10 hours clinical rotation, the student will not be eligible to test for certification and will not complete the course. If the opportunity presents itself and under the direct supervision of a preceptor, the EMTBasic student should be able to: 1. Perform one or two person CPR for adult and pediatric patients 2. Perform infant resuscitation 3. Assists with bag-valve-mask ventilation 4. Perform adult, pediatric, and infant foreign body airway obstruction techniques 5. Assist with initial assessment procedures 6. Assist with blood glucose monitoring 7. Assist with monitoring peripheral intravenous infusions 8. Assist with automatic or semiautomatic defibrillation 9. Remove the pneumatic anti-shock garment under the direction and supervision of a physician 10. Assist with facilitation of patient medications Student shall not: 1. Do any documentation on any hospital document. 2. Perform any other skills other than those listed above. B. During completion of this requirement, the following rules must be adhered to or the student may be withdrawn from the training program. 1. Act in a professional manner and do not behave in such a way as to bring discredit upon the student, the program or EVIT. 2. Do not interfere with routine of the Hospital/Agency. The student will follow the guidelines outlines by the hospital/agency staff maintaining availability to help as directed by the hospital/agency staff. 3. Dress appropriately, School uniform required with closed heel and toe shoes and socks. The hospital/agency staff may ask the student to leave and return at their discretion of they believe your mode of dress is inappropriate and/or safe for the patient care environment. 5. Bring only the following with you • School Verification Forms • School Photo ID • Pen • Stethoscope marked with your name • Watch with a second hand C. At the completion of the assigned observation time, a summary evaluation will be sent to your EVIT EMT Instructor. If the evaluation is unsatisfactory, the student will be required to reschedule through your EVIT EMT Instructor. The student cannot pass the course without the successful evaluation. All forms must be turned into your EVIT EMT Instructor or the student will receive a failing grade. D. The student has the responsibility of delivering all required clinical documents to your EVIT EMT Instructor as soon as each assignment is completed. Clinical observation records will be collected by EVIT/your instructor and will become part of the student’s permanent record. This course requirement is not negotiable. Under no circumstances is the student to contact the hospital regarding rescheduling. Classroom Procedures: Students are expected to follow the rules of behavior outlined in the EVIT Student Handbook in addition to those below: Classroom Climate: • Act professional at all times. Mature behavior is expected of all students. • Be in class on time every day and be productive. Learning Preparation: • You should enter the classroom prepared to learn every day. This means get enough rest and nourishment to function at peak capacity every day. • You will be assigned a seat in class and the seating arrangement can change at the discretion of the instructor. • Leave your desk and surrounding area clean for the next student who will sit there. • You must have with you every day: 1. Black/Blue pen 2. No. 2 pencil 3. Lined paper 4. 3 inch 3-ring binder 5. Note cards 6. Student Workbook 7. Wearing complete and correct uniform Food and Beverages • Food and beverages other than water are NOT allowed in any building on this campus. Water must be in a clear water bottle with a lid. You may also be subject to disciplinary action. Uniform • Closed toed shoes (white or black) • Red short sleeve or long sleeve EVIT “EMT Student” t-shirt • Navy Blue Pants/Shorts o NO jeans o Shorts must reach mid-thigh level o Both must look professional • 2 uniform shirts and 2 pairs of uniform pants are provided in fees paid. Professional Appearance: We are very proud of the image of the EVIT EMT Program, particularly in the area of personal appearance. The following guidelines have been established to meet the dress requirements of the EMT Program. • Students are to wear the official EMT program uniform in all academic and clinical settings. • The EMT student uniform must be clean and neat, use an iron to remove obvious wrinkles. Do not wear colored undergarments that are visible under the uniform. • Hair must be clean, worn off collar, and back from face while in uniform. • No jewelry is to be worn with the uniform except wedding rings, engagement rings, and wristwatch. • One pair of small plain posts may be worn in pierced ears. No body piercing jewelry is to be visible. • Hair color should be a natural color. • Makeup should be subtle and in good taste. Neatly trimmed beards and mustaches are permitted. Sideburns are permissible to lower earlobe, non-flared. • Students will maintain personal hygiene. Students will bathe daily and use deodorant. No offensive body odor or cigarette smell. • Cologne, after-shave, or perfumes are not permitted in the clinical agency. • Picture ID badge is worn upper left side of uniform at all times while in the clinical agency. • White/Black socks must be worn with the uniform. • Black/white closed toe shoes or boots. No clogs or sandals. • Fingernails must be clean, short with no polish. Artificial nails, nail wraps or extenders are not permitted when providing patient care. • No chewing gum while in uniform. • Teacher approved sweatshirt may be worn over the uniform. • Cell phones will not be allowed during class or the clinical experiences. Any necessary, emergency contacts may be given the number of the clinical instructor. Replace all textbooks, workbooks, folders and equipment to the proper storage area. Trash and recyclable items will be placed in the appropriate receptacle provided. Computer Use: • • Use of the computers is a privilege and granted to students as long as he/she understands and complies with the rules of use. Altering a computer’s standard configuration or operation is prohibited. Students are required to use the Internet for research projects, and homework assignments. Access to Internet is available in our computer labs. See the Student Handbook for further information about computer use. Health and Safety Guidelines A. Health Declaration It is essential that EMT students be able to perform a number of physical activities in the clinical portion of the program. At a minimum, students will be required to lift patients, stand for several hours at a time and perform bending activities. Students who have a chronic illness or condition that necessitates ongoing treatment must be able to meet all program objectives/expectations relative to direct patient care. The clinical nursing experience places students under considerable mental and emotional stress as they undertake responsibilities and duties impacting patients’ lives. Students must be able to demonstrate rational and appropriate behavior under stressful conditions. Individuals should give careful consideration to the mental and physical demands of the program prior to making application. B. Immunization Requirements 1. All students entering the EMT course must meet all immunization requirements to be enrollment in the clinical portion of the course. Students will meet these requirements by providing a completed immunization record with documentation of MMR, DPT, a chicken pox (Varicella) titer from your doctor showing immunity or a chicken pox vaccination, a TB test (annual), Hepatitis B vaccination, or signed declination form, and annual flu vaccination. The annual TB test and flu vaccination must remain current throughout the clinical experience. Clinical sites are now requiring the flu vaccination or a waiver. If waiver is preferred, student will have to wear a mask during the clinical rotation. 2. Students unable or unwilling to provide documentation of compliance with the immunization requirements will be withdrawn from all nursing courses. EXEMPTIONS for any reason are not accepted. C. Illness and/or Disabilities Students are expected to participate fully in activities required by the program. This includes, but is not limited to, lifting patients, standing for several hours a time and bending. Students must also exhibit stable mental processes by being able to function appropriately under stressful conditions. • Any student having a temporary medical condition inhibiting/restricting their activities must supply a written explanation from their physician. Should a student become unable to participate fully in the program’s activities, they may be withdrawn. • Should the student require any type of special accommodation, the student must notify the instructor before clinical arrangements are made. Individual faculty will not provide extra time, different environments, or dictionaries during testing without official documentation of disability. D. Pregnancy Pregnant students may want to take special precautions due to the physical requirements and possible exposure to harmful diseases or substances. A letter will be required from the attending physician regarding any limits on participation due to pregnancy. Students will be expected to meet all program objectives/expectations. Accommodations will be made if reasonable and possible. Following delivery, return to the program will require physician clearance. E. Insurance The student should carry health care insurance while participating in any academic or clinical learning experience. Student accident insurance, which covers the student while in school, is available for purchase if you have no primary insurance. • If a student is injured during clinical, the student should notify the instructor, fill out an incident form at the clinical site, and also one at EVIT, located in the nurses office or the campus instructor’s office. F. Emergency Contacts It is essential for students to complete the proper forms with up-to-date emergency contact information i.e. parent’s full name, place of work and telephone numbers, home telephone number, home address, cell phone number, and who to contact if a parent can’t be reached. Standard of Conduct: Students are expected to follow the Guidelines for Student Behavior in the EVIT Student Handbook. In addition: • Proper behavior is a job skill practiced by all industries. EVIT is not an exception. • Health care students/workers are expected to have excellent work ethics, be able to work as a team player, and demonstrate an empathetic attitude for their patients. • Respect one another’s right to be recognized. To speak during classroom time, always raise your hand and wait to be acknowledged by the instructor. Otherwise please remain silent during announcements, presentations, lectures, or demonstrations. • Respect each other. Refer to others by their proper name. • Respect EVIT staff. Refer to staff members as Mr., Mrs., or Ms., whichever is appropriate. • Respect the property of others, Mrs. Plough, Mr. Lisonbee, and the school. • Students are required to stay on task, be organized, and practice time management during class time. • All safety rules must be adhered to when working with equipment. • Student’s heads must be in an upright position at all times. If your head is down, it appears that you are sleeping and not interested in class. • No horseplay will be tolerated at any time. We will conduct school in a safe environment. • Students may not leave the building during class time. Students may not leave the classroom without a written permission in the form of a pass from the teacher. • Students are responsible for the care of equipment (including desks) used and textbooks. • Violence has no place at EVIT. Violent behavior (physical or verbal) will result in immediate removal from the program. Second-time: A phone call will be made to your parent or guardian for corrective action. Third-time: You will be referred to an administrator for corrective action. A phone call home will also be made. Disciplinary Action Guidelines: When an EMT student is in violation of any requirement contained in this Student Handbook, he/she is subject to disciplinary action or immediate dismissal. All students should carefully review the EVIT Student Handbook. Dismissals and suspensions for reasons based on academic misconduct and student discipline, as well as reasons based on the EMT Student Handbook, will proceed according to the Judicial Policies section of the Student Discipline Code. See the Student Due Process section in the EVIT Student Handbook. Zero Tolerance Policy: The East Valley Institute of Technology supports a Zero Tolerance Policy for the following behaviors: • Intentionally or recklessly causing physical harm to any person on the campus or at a clinical site, or intentionally or recklessly causing reasonable apprehension of such harm. • Unauthorized use or possession of any weapon or explosive device on the campus or at a clinical site. • Unauthorized use, distribution, or possession for purposes of distribution of any controlled substance or illegal drug on the campus or at a clinical site. • EVIT has a zero tolerance for bullying including cyber bullying (ie Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat). An EMT Program student engaging in this misconduct is subject to immediate dismissal from EMT classes and disciplinary action as described in the EVIT Student Handbook. Academic Misconduct/Cheating: Cheating on an examination, laboratory work, written work (plagiarism); falsifying, forging or altering school records. Cheating may result in dismissal from the program. Cheating, includes, but is not limited to: • Copying from others during an examination. • Communicating exam answers with another student during an examination. • Offering another person’s work as one’s own (plagiarism). Taking an examination for another student or having someone take an examination for you. • Sharing answers for a take-home examination or assignment unless specifically authorized by the instructor. • Tampering with an examination after it has been corrected, then returning it for more credit. Acquires, without permission, tests or other academic material belonging to a member of the school faculty or staff. Removing tests from the classroom, duplicates, writes down, or copies questions or answers on another piece of paper during test review sessions. Any student who knowingly or intentionally helps another student perform any of the above acts of cheating or plagiarism is subject to discipline for academic dishonesty. Any preparation of written material that is fraudulent and/or untruthful. Plagiarism - includes, but is not limited to, the use of paraphrase or direct quotation of the published or unpublished work of another person without full and clear acknowledgment. It also includes the unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic materials. Unsafe or Unethical Clinical Conduct: The following is a partial list of actions that constitute Unsafe or Unethical Clinical Conduct and may become the basis for withdrawal from the EMT course(s): • Unsatisfactory clinical evaluations. • Lack of adequate theoretical knowledge for application to patient care. • Violation of principles of confidentiality. • Lack of preparation for clinical practice. • Failing to respect client rights and dignity. • Soliciting, borrowing, or removing property or money from a client or client’s family. • Assuming client care tasks for which the EMT student lacks the education or competence to perform. • Removing drugs, supplies, equipment, or medical records from the clinical setting. • Abandonment: Leaving clinical agency or patient assignment without notification. When any performance occurs which could jeopardize life, impede recovery, or interfere with the maintenance of the patient’s current health status, a conference will be held as soon as possible with the EMT student, EMT instructor, and other Administrative persons. Drug Screening Guidelines All students are required to submit to a random urine drug screening during the fall semester as a condition of continued enrollment, and clinical placement, in the EMT program. 1. Students will submit a permission form signed by the parents. 2. Any Lab Test Now (contracted outside vendor) will conduct the screening and will mail negative results to the EVIT Health Director/Assistant Principal. If a student tests positive, the lab will contact the Health Director/Assistant Principal who will check for prescription drug use on the Emergency Medical Card on file. The Instructor and/or Health Director/Assistant Principal will contact the student and parent to discuss the results and consequences of the positive result. 3. Only students receiving negative drug screens as reported by Any Lab Test Now may be permitted to remain enrolled in nursing courses. Students testing positive for drugs that are illegal substances, non-prescribed legal substances, or deemed unsafe for the clinical setting by the Instructor and/or Health Director/Assistant Principal will not be permitted to attend the EMT courses including the required clinical rotation. Students will not be allowed to use previous drug screens requested by any person or agency outside the East Valley Institute of Technology. Any student who is absent on the day the drug screening is conducted will have 24 hours to have this screening performed. The student must contact the following clinic for this test. Drug Screening - “For Cause” Testing: This policy refers to the use/misuse of, or being under the influence of: alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs or drugs which impair judgment while on duty in any health care facility, school, institution or other work location as a representative of the EMT Program. A. When a faculty/clinical instructor perceives the odor of alcohol or observes behaviors such as, but not limited to, slurred speech, unsteady gait, or confusion, and these behaviors cause the faculty or clinical instructor to suspect the student is impaired by alcohol or drugs, the following steps are taken: 1. The instructor will remove the student from the patient care or assigned work area and notify the clinical agency supervising personnel. This also includes the classroom environment and skills labs. 2. Student’s parent or guardian will be called to pick up the student (or a responsible adult listed as an emergency contact for an adult student) and transport them immediately to Any Lab Test Now for a drug screen. This must be accomplished within 1 1/2 hours from initial call. If no parent or guardian is available, the security guard from EVIT will be called to transport the student. This additional testing will be done at the student’s/parents expense. 3. The student is to use their EVIT student picture ID for identification at the drug testing faculty. 4. The EVIT Health Director/Assistant Principal will be informed of the student’s actions. 5. If the student admits to alcohol or drug use, he/she will still require drug screening. B. If the results of the test(s) are negative for drugs, alcohol, or other illegal substances, or for non-prescribed legal substances, the student shall meet with the instructor and/or Health Director/Assistant Principal within 24 hours of the test results to discuss the circumstances surrounding the impaired clinical behavior. • If the indicator was the odor of alcohol, the student will be mandated to discontinue the use of whatever may have caused the alcohol-like odor before being allowed to return to the clinical setting. • If the indicator was behavioral, consideration must be given to a possible medical condition being responsible for the symptoms. A medical referral for evaluation may be indicated. • Based on the information provided in this meeting and further medical evaluations, if warranted, the Lead Instructor will make a decision regarding return to the clinical setting. If the results of the test(s) are positive for alcohol or other illegal substances or for nonprescribed legal substances, the instructor will withdraw the student from the EMT program. The student will pay for all costs associated with the for-cause drug-screening test. D. If a Student refuses “for Cause” Testing: • The instructor will remove the student from the clinical setting pending a full investigation. • The instructor will contact parents to request that the student be transported home (a responsible adult listed as an emergency contact for an adult student). If a responsible adult cannot arrive in an expedient time frame, the student will be provided security at the facility until the parent or responsible adult can arrive for transport home. The impaired person will not be allowed to drive. • Failure to comply with any aspect of this policy will result in withdrawal from the program. Guidelines Regarding Exposure to Body Fluids All healthcare personnel and students are professionally and ethically obligated to provide client care with compassion and respect for human dignity. Hence, they may not ethically refuse to care for clients solely because the client is at risk of contracting, or has, an infectious disease such as HIV, AIDS, or HBV. All rules of confidentiality are followed when working with clients. 1. Standard Precautions All blood and body fluids are considered potentially infectious and are treated as if known to be infectious for HIV, HBV, and other blood-borne pathogens. A. Contaminated sharps shall not be bent, recapped, or removed. Shearing or breaking of contaminated needles is prohibited. B. Contaminated sharps must be placed in an appropriate disposal container as soon as possible. C. Eating, drinking, smoking, applying cosmetics or lip balm, and handling contact lenses are prohibited in the work area where there is a likelihood of occupational exposure. Mouth pipetting/suctioning of blood or other potentially infectious materials is prohibited. D. When exposure is possible, personal protective equipment shall be used. Personal protective equipment includes: • Gloves shall be worn when it can be reasonably anticipated that the individual may have hand contact with blood, other potentially infectious materials, mucous membranes, and non-intact skin, when performing vascular access procedures, and when touching contaminated items or surfaces. • Masks, eye protection, and face shields shall be worn whenever splashes, spray, splatter, or droplets of blood or other potentially infectious materials may be generated and eye, nose, or mouth contamination can be reasonably anticipated. • Gowns, aprons, and other protective body clothing shall be worn in occupational exposure situations and will depend upon the task and the degree of exposure anticipated. • Surgical caps or hoods and shoe covers shall be worn in instances when gross contamination can be reasonably anticipated. • Hands shall be washed immediately after removal of gloves or other personal protective equipment and before and after contact with all patients. Exposure Guidelines (Excerpts from OSHA Blood-borne Pathogens Section 1910.1030) A. Students must wear appropriate protective clothing/equipment when performing any task(s) that may involve exposure to body fluids. B. Any direct exposure to body fluids occurring while functioning as a nursing student must be reported immediately to the clinical instructor. C. Students exposed to body fluids shall follow this protocol: 1) Wash the area immediately with a disinfectant agent; for eye splashes rinse the area with clean water. 2) Report the incident to the clinical instructor. 3) The clinical instructor and student will notify the agency department supervisor. 4) The student will complete an agency site incident report; the agency will complete testing on the source patient. 5) The student will complete the EVIT accident report. 3. Students are highly encouraged to report to the nearest Concentra location for post exposure testing, counseling and follow up treatment. Students are responsible for the cost of testing at the time of treatment. They may use private insurance or self-pay. Students may elect to see their personal physician. 4. Blood tests prices (subject to change) are: HIV Screen - $124.00 ALT - $115.00 HEP B & C Profile - $151.00 (All three tests will be needed) 5. Instructors will complete a Concentra Authorization for Examination or Treatment form for the student to take with them to Concentra. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) All verbal, electronic, and written information relating to patients/clients and contracted agencies is considered confidential and is not to be copied or discussed with anyone. Information may be disclosed only as defined in HIPAA guidelines for educational purposes. A breach of confidentiality will result in disciplinary action, up to and including possible dismissal from the program and/or course. Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO) • HOSA Future Health Professionals is a student non-profit organization that teaches leadership and career development skills. • HOSA competitions are available regionally, state wide, and nationally for possible student participation. • Students are required to participate in the annual HOSA service project, other participation is voluntary.
