The Attic Myth
The myth of how Athens came to be. In Attic myth, the father of the Athenian
race was the son of the Attic earth. During his reign the gods divided up the earth amongst
themselves. Athena and Poseidon both laid claims on Athens. The Athenians were to decide
who was going to be the patron deity of their city. They decided the one who offered the
best gift would be the patron deity. Posiedon struck the Acropolis rock with his triton and
produced a huge stream of gushing seawater. He promised the civilians great success with
trade over seas. The Greeks were tired of all the warfare at sea and Poseidon’s gift
reminded them of war too much. They anxiously awaited to see Athena’s gift. Athena then
struck her staff on the Acropolis rock and an olive tree grew. The Greeks were impressed
by her gift because it symbolized growth and prosperity. In turn Athena was the honored
deity for Athens but without neglect the Geeks honored and respected Poseidon. The
Erectheion is a temple that is devoted to both of these god figures.
