General Services Administration Heartland Region ENERGY STAR Validations The United States Environmental Protection Agencies ENERGY STAR program for commercial buildings is national energy performance rating system that provides a 1-100 scale that helps organizations assess how efficiently their buildings use energy relative to similar buildings nationwide. The buildings physical characteristics and energy consumption are entered into ENERGY STAR’s Portfolio Manager and a score is generated based upon energy use for the particular building type. A building that scores a rating of 75 or higher is eligible for the ENERGY STAR label. In order to apply for the US EPA's ENERGY STAR certification, a Professional Engineer must visit the site and verify the building operation in accordance with ASHRAE and IESNA Standards. While visiting the site, Engineer verifies that the information provided in the building’s ENERGY STAR’s Portfolio account is correct. The engineer also ensures that the building occupants comfortable with lighting levels, thermal comfort, and/or adequate ventilation and that occupant comfort is not being sacrificed with the facility’s desire for improved energy efficiency. FEA provided this verification service to 12 federal facilities in the GSA Heartland Region with a total building area of 3,940,707 square feet and an average building area of 328,392 square feet. All of the facilities have earned the ENERGY STAR label with the lowest at a score of 75, the highest at a score 94 and an average score of 84.
