Prof Fong Kok Yong

Professor Fong Kok Yong was appointed Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer (Regional
Health and Medical), SingHealth from 1 October 2015. He is concurrently the Chairman,
Medical Board (CMB) of Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and Senior Consultant,
Department of Rheumatology and Immunology at SGH. As CMB, he is responsible for
setting standards and maintaining clinical quality as part of good clinical governance.
Prof Fong is also the Chairman of the Residency Advisory Committee for Rheumatology
(Ministry of Health) and Member of the Residency Advisory Committee for Internal
Medicine (Ministry of Health) since 2012. He is also the Associate Editor for APLAR
Journal of Rheumatology since 2006 and for Singapore Medical Journal since 2008.
He is a Fellow of Academy Medicine, Singapore in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology
and Royal College of Edinburgh, UK. Prof Fong has over 100 peer-reviewed publications
to date. He serves as the Senior Associate Dean for the Duke-NUS Graduate School of
Medicine and a faculty member of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National
University of Singapore.

Associate Professor Premarani Kannusamy

A/Prof Premarani Kannusamy is from the Ministry of Health, Singapore. She is currently
seconded to the SingHealth Regional Health System as their Deputy Director (Strategy
Planning). She is an Associate Professor of Nursing at the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing
Studies at National University of Singapore, and the founding President of Upsilon Eta
Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau International. Prema was a World Health Organisation Scholar
and holds a PhD (major in management) from Australia. Not only does Prema have a
wealth of management experience, she has been actively involved in education for the
last 30 years. She is an international speaker and has a passion for research and
evidence-based practice. Prema has also received several international and national
awards.

Dr Shawn Vasoo
Consultant, Institute of Infectious Diseases & Epidemiology, Tan Tock
Seng Hospital
Dr Shawn Vasoo is a Consultant in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Institute
of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology (IIDE), Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He graduated
from the National University of Singapore in 2001. He completed his Internal Medicine
residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship at Rush University Medical Centre in
Chicago, with further subspecialty training in Clinical Microbiology and Orthopaedic
Infectious Diseases at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Returning to Singapore in
2014 to be back at TTSH, he is core faculty in the Infectious Diseases Residency Programs
and co-leads the Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory. He is also the chair of the
Outbreak Training Subcommittee at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, equipping staff to be
prepared for outbreaks via drills and simulation training.

Ms Tan Soh Chin
Chief Nursing Officer, Ministry of Health, Singapore
The Ministry of Health (MOH) appointed Ms Tan Soh Chin as the nation’s Chief Nursing
Officer (CNO) in Jan 2015. Her office is responsible for overseeing the strategic
development of nurses in Singapore in evaluating nursing policies and standards as well
as provide professional input to the Ministry on all nursing policy matters.
Concurrent with her appointment as CNO, Soh Chin is also the Registrar of the Singapore
Nursing Board, which regulates nursing registration and education.
Prior to assuming the CNO’s role, she was the Deputy Group Director, Nursing for
Singapore Health Services (SingHealth) and concurrent Director, Nursing for KK Women’s
and Children’s Hospital.
Soh Chin holds a Master of Science in Health Services and Nursing Management from
South Bank University, United Kingdom. Presently, she shares her nursing knowledge and
expertise as a guest lecturer for the Advanced Diploma and Masters programmes with
Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and NUS-Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies (ALCNS)
respectively.

Prof Kerlyn Carville

Keryln has extensive clinical experience and is committed to research and education
within the domains of wound and ostomy care. She was appointed a Fellow of the
Australian Wound Management Association (now Wounds Australia) in 2006. She is Chair
of the Australian Pressure Injury Advisory Panel and Chair Pan Pacific Pressure Injury
Alliance, Chair of the Wounds Australia Wound Standards Committee and sits on the
International Wound Infection Institute Committee. Keryln was awarded the WA Health
Life Time Achievement Award for Nursing in 2010 and Life Membership of the Australian
Association of Stomal Therapy Nurses in 2015.

Tan Ban Hock
Senior Consultant, Infectious Diseases, Singapore General
Hospital
Dr Tan Ban Hock graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1989. He trained
in Infectious Diseases in Singapore and Boston. His main interest is the
immunocompromised patient, in particular, the transplant recipient. He is a member of
the Specialist Training Committee in Infectious Diseases, and sits on the editorial board
of the journal Transplant Infectious Disease.
Research Interests:
Infections in immunocompromised host and CMV infections.
Peter Lim
Group Chief Risk Officer, SingHealth
Dept. of Rehabilitation Medicine, Singapore General Hospital
Dr Peter Lim is the Group Chief Risk Officer for SingHealth and is in charge of Enterprise
Risk Management within the cluster. He is also a senior consultant rehabilitation
physician and former founding Head of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at
Singapore General Hospital. Dr Lim did his postgraduate medical training at the
Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago and
is American board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with subspecialty
certification in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine.
Dr Lim played a major role in the development of Rehabilitation Medicine as a medical
specialty in Singapore, and has been involved for many years with rehabilitation
physician training in the US, Malaysia, as well as a number of other countries in the
region. He is an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, on the International Advisory Board of the Annals of Rehabilitation
Medicine, and is peer reviewer for various medical journals.
His academic appointments include Clinical Professor, Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Adjunct Professor, Medical Faculty
University of Malaya, and Adjunct Associate Professor, Duke-NUS Medical School,
Singapore.
Ho Le Onn
Assistant Director
Patient Safety and Clinical Standards, Singapore General Hospital
Dr Ho Le Onn is presently Assistant Director at the Patient Safety and Clinical Standards
Unit (PSCSU) in SGH. He completed his MBBS at the University of Melbourne and also
holds a Master Degree in Industrial and Organisational Psychology. He has worked to
setup the clinical governance framework at SGH and continues to develop it in line with
driving the patient safety, risk management, quality assurance and quality improvement
programs in the hospital. Dr Ho is actively involved in Joint Commission International
accreditation process of the hospital and further coordinates with the Ministry of Health
with regards to patient safety and quality improvement initiatives in SGH.
Dr Ho has also been actively involved in the various Patient Safety teaching and training
programs for medical staff at SGH and SingHealth as well as teaching Patient Safety at
the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.
Dr Rosalind Siah Chiew Jiat
Lecturer, Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, NUS
Dr. Rosalind Siah is a Lecturer with the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies at the
National University of Singapore (NUS) in Year 2014. She received her Doctor of
Philosophy study on surgical wound care management in year 2016, Master in Health
Science (Management) and Advanced Diploma in Gerontology in year 2006. Her areas of
expertise were specific to signs and symptoms of surgical wound infection as well as the
latest technology of wound dressing management and nursing education pedagogy.
Dr Emily Ho Tse Lin
Senior Consultant, Endocrinology, Singapore General Hospital
Dr Emily Ho is a Senior Consultant in the Department of Endocrinology, Singapore
General Hospital. She is concurrently Clinical Director, Regional Health System SingHealth
overseeing efforts in primary care partnerships and networks. She is actively involved in
shaping initiatives in the SingHealth community and targeted screening programs and coleads the Diabetes Screening Workgroup under the Singhealth Diabetes Action
Taskforce. Dr Ho has a keen interest in new models of chronic disease care delivery. She
is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and is Clinical
Senior Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.
Dr Shanker Pasupathy
Visiting Consultant
Dept. of Upper Gastrointestinal/Bariatric Surgery, Singapore General
Hospital
Dr Shanker Pasupathy graduated from NUS in 1995 and obtained both FRCS (Glasgow)
and FRCS (Edinburgh) in 1999. After general and vascular surgery training in Singapore,
UK and Germany, he completed a 1-year fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and robotic
surgery in France.
Dr Shanker has a special interest in keyhole surgery for gastro-esophageal conditions,
gallbladder and abdominal hernia. He was formerly the Director of the LIFE Centre and
Chief of the Metabolic-Bariatric Surgery service at SGH. He is past president of the
Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore (OMSSS) and the Endoscopic and
Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA Singapore Chapter).

Dr Alvin Chua Wen Choong
Senior Principal Med Lab Scientist/Deputy Head (Skin Bank Unit), Plastic
Surgery, Singapore General Hospital
Dr Alvin Chua is currently the Senior Principal Medical Laboratory Scientist and Deputy
Head at the Singapore General Hospital’s Skin Bank and Culture Laboratory. In addition,
he is Assistant Director of - Transplant Tissue Centre, Singhealth - responsible for the
operations, quality assurance and research of the comprehensive tissue banking services
for skin, cardiovascular tissues and iliac vessels. He teaches Biomaterials and Tissue
Engineering at Nanyang Polytechnic and is an external Consultant to CellResearch
Corporation Pte Ltd, a successful Singapore biotechnology company specializing in cord
lining tissues and stem cells for therapeutic applications. Dr Chua has more than 15 years
of tissue banking and cellular skin culture experience, having previously trained in the
USA, Australia and Switzerland. As Principal Investigator, Dr Chua is currently leading two
major projects which involve stem cell application for enhanced healing in burns and
chronic wounds. In May 2016, he was awarded the Distinguished Team Award as part of
the SGH Burns Team at the Singhealth Excellence Awards ceremony and in November
2016, he received the Best Abstract Award at The 7th Annual Meeting of Asian Cellular
Therapy Organization in Beijing for his work on using cord lining cells on wounds of large
animal model.

Mr Luther Yiew

Luther Yiew is a Senior Staff Nurse of Children’s Emergency, KKH. The Children’s
Emergency sees typical more than 500 children per day. His daily role varies from triaging
pediatric patients according to the severity, implementing his specific role during a
resuscitation and assessing the improvement or deterioration of patients’ conditions in
the observation room. His research interests include understanding burnout in staff,
understanding reasons for non-urgent emergency visits, and improving the assessibility
of accurate healthcare understanding to parents and caregivers. He hopes to empower
nurses to make critical clinical decisions that allow parents to make more informed
choices in seeking paediatric emergency care.
Luther graduated from the National Univeristy of Singapore in 2013 with a BSc (Nursing).
He completed his AdvDip in Nursing (Emergency) from Nanyang Polytechnic in 2016. He
aspires to practice clinical paediatrics as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
Tham Lai Peng

Dr Tham Lai Peng is a Senior Consultant with the Department of Emergency Medicine of
KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Singapore. She is also an Adjunct Assistant
Professor in Paediatrics for the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Ling School of
Medicine, and the Duke-NUS Medical School.
She is the Associate Program Director of the Singhealth Pediatric Residency Program and
a Physician Faculty of the Singhealth Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Since
2012, she is a member of the Emergency Medicine Examination Committee.
She graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore in 1991,
and obtained her Master in Medicine (Paediatrics) in 1997. She completed her specialist

Candice Chan

Candice Chan is an infectious diseases physician at Singapore General Hospital. She
completed her basic medical training from University of Edinburgh (Scotland).

Maureen Spencer, RN, M.Ed. is board certified in infection control and is an Infection
Prevention Consultant, Boston, MA. She was previously the Corporate Director,
Infection Prevention for Universal Health Services in King of Prussia, PA, Infection Control
(IC) Manager at New England Baptist Hospital, Director Infection Control Unit at Mass
General Hospital and Infection Control Nurse at VA Medical Center, West Roxbury and
Carney Hospital in Boston, MA.
As one of the early pioneers in infection control, she was awarded the APIC National
Carole DeMille Award in 1990 and was selected as one of the APIC Heroes of Infection
Prevention in 2007 for her work in establishing a MRSA and Staph aureus Elimination
Program at New England Baptist. Maureen was one of the contributing authors in
Comprehensive Perioperative Nursing Textbook and has published numerous scientific
papers and presents at many national and international conferences.
Hoe Nam LEONG (Dr)

Novena Specialist Centre
Dr Leong Hoe Nam is an Infectious Diseases Physician. He graduated from NUS in 1996,
and obtained his MRCP and M Med in 2001. Thereafter, he began his advanced specialist
training in infectious diseases. Dr Leong further pursued his interest in virology at the
Royal Free and University College Medical School, London under a fellowship awarded by
the National Medical Research Council. In 2008 he was awarded a second research
fellowship to train at the University of Columbia, New York, on emerging pathogens.
Dr Leong was previously a consultant in the Department of Infectious Disease in SGH.
Having left Singapore General Hospital, he continued his practice in Infectious Diseases at
the private Raffles Hospital before setting up his own clinic at Mount Elizabeth Hospital
at Novena. He has been directly involved in the care of transplant patients, individuals
with multi-drug resistant organisms, tuberculosis, HIV, AIDS, surgical complications, viral
infections, fungal infections including aspergillosis, cryptococcosis and mucormycosis,
and complex medical problems. He had first-hand experience in managing outbreak
situations including SARS and H1N1 pandemic infection. He has also published several
research papers on virology.
Dr Leong has been frequently interviewed by live tv, radio presenters and various print
journalists. He is frequently sought for an opinion on various infectious diseases.
Dr Leong was a clinical tutor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He was a faculty
member at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and still maintains his adjunct
position as assistant professor while working at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. He
remains a visiting consultant at the Singapore General Hospital, the National Cancer
Centre Singapore, and the Dover Park Hospice Hospital.

Dr Christopher Khor Jen Lock
Senior Consultant Head, Dept of Gastroenterology and Hepatology,
Director, SGH Endoscopy
Dr Christopher J L Khor attended medical school at the National
University of Singapore, and completed clinical fellowships in ERCP and
in Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) at the Medical University of South
Carolina and Indiana University Medical Center respectively. More
recently, he trained in Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection in
Japan. His main practice areas are in pancreato-biliary disease (ERCP
and EUS), endoscopic resection and general gastroenterology. Dr Khor
has more than 30 peer-reviewed papers to his name, and is a reviewer
for a number of endoscopy and GI journals.
He has a keen interest in endoscopic quality and education, and in
promoting cross-border co-operation among the regional endoscopic
community. His regional work includes regular faculty invitations to
demonstrate and teach endoscopy. On the home front, Dr Khor led the
project team building his hospital's new Ambulatory Endoscopy Centre,
a state-of-the-art facility. He currently co-chairs an Asia-Pacific group
focused on EUS education. He was Vice-President of Asian-Pacific
Digestive Week 2011 in Singapore, for which he directed Endoscopy
programming, and is a past President of the Gastroenterological Society
of Singapore.

Dr Khoo Poh Choo

Dr Khoo has been working in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital since 1997, upon her
return from the UK, where she did her Paediatric training. She has been a Senior
Consultant in the Department of Neonatology, KK Women’s and Children’s hospital since
November 2006, Head of Service of the Neonatal Ambulatory Team since August 2012
and since January 2017 is current Deputy Head of the Department of Neonatology at
KKH.
Dr Khoo is currently in charge of KKH’s premature infants follow-up Programme as well
as the current Director of the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) Programme
in KKH.
She is an active member of the Paediatric Fraternity and is currently an executive
committee member of the Singapore Paediatric Society as well as Council Member of the
College of Paediatrics and Child Health (CPHCS).
She is currently Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Yong Loo Lin Medical School as well as
on the AGCME Physician Faculty.
Dr Khoo received a HSDP grant in 2014 for the project: Multidisciplinary Development
Follow-Up for High Risk Infants.
Li Shao-Tzu
Genetic Counsellor
Cancer Genetics Service/National Cancer Centre Singapore
Ms. Li Shao-Tzu is a genetic counsellor at the Cancer Genetics Service (CGS), National
Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS). She obtained her Master of Science in Genetic
Counselling at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and achieved her professional
certification by the American Board of Genetic Counselling. She works as part of a
dynamic team at the CGS, comprising of a Medical Oncologist/Cancer Geneticist, genetic
counsellors and research scientists. As a genetic counsellor, Ms. Li works closely with
cancer patients and their families to provide support and education in the context of
hereditary cancer syndromes. Additionally, Ms. Li has been actively involved in research
and was recently the lead author on a paper investigating the impact of subsidies on
genetic testing at the CGS, NCCS.
Ms Lee Hwei Ling
Nurse Clinician, Speciality Nursing
Hwei Ling has 16 years of Liver Transplant experience with NUH and SGH and currently is
a Nurse Clinician with SGH, Specialty Nursing, as a Hepatology Nurse. Her role includes:

complications and self-monitoring of symptoms.
Being a resource person to Doctors looking after this group of patients.
Collaborating with Allied Health colleagues such as Pharmacists, Medical Social
Workers, Dietician and Physiotherapist to improve the care rendered to this
group of patients.
While in Liver Transplant, Hwei Ling is here to share with us the Journey that a patient
will need to go through before, during and after transplant. As this journey is a life-long
venture, it is important that the journey is smooth, strong and sustainable.
Xu Yi
Nurse Clinician (Patient Navigator)
Xu Yi has joined Singapore General Hospital (SGH) since she graduated in 2000. She has
obtained Advanced Diploma in Oncology from Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore and
Bachelor in Health Science (Nursing) from University of Sydney. In 2007, she was offered
a HMDP Fellowship to the USA at Moffitt Cancer Centre for Geriatric Oncology in
Nursing. She has actively collaborated with oncology and palliative nurses for researches
focused on advanced tumor wound management and end of life care. She has received
18th SGH Annual Scientific Meeting Young Investigator’s Award (Nursing) in 2009. As a
dedicated oncology nurse, Xu Yi has been awarded with Novartis Oncology Nursing
Excellence Award, Singhealth-Lee Foundation Nursing Excellence Award, Singhealth
Outstanding Transplant Nurses’ Award, and Ministry of Health Nurses Merit Award.
Xu Yi joined the pioneer batch of Patient Navigators of Singhealth in 2014. Her role is to
ensure that patients receive appropriate transitional care and psychosocial support
timely through well-orchestrated interdisciplinary effort. She collaborated with SGH
Patient Navigators and Nursing Research Team on the publication of “Case series
proceeding: Navigating the healthcare system: a patient navigator role” and qualitative
research on “Identifying patients with high risk of readmission from the patient
navigators' perspectives”. Currently she co-leads the patient navigator team under the
SingHealth Regional Health System (RHS) to streamline the work process and ensure
smooth transit of patient from hospital to home.

Seng Hong has been in Nursing for more than 49 years. He has worked in various
hospitals, longest being in Institute of Mental Health. In 1991, he did his training on
Behavioural Psychotherapy at Institute of Psychiatry, London, under HMDP scholarship.
Trained as Emergency Behaviour Officer and was involved in many disasters
management like providing on-site support to next of kin in Silkair disaster in 1997 and
SQ006. He is also a facilitator in training of disaster management.
Trained as a stress buster and is a trainer for Corporate Consultancy Service, Institue of
Mental Health. He has been regularly invited to deliver lectures for the Advance Diploma
Nursing course (Mental Health, Community and Gerontological nursing) at Nanyang
Polytechnic. He has volunteered himself in voluntary welfare orginsation like SAMH
(BOard Member), and Psychiatric Outreach Programme. He has presented papers in
International Conference as well as articles in journal.
He was national award winner for 3M-ICN (International Council of Nursing) in 1981. He
was also awarded Efficiency Medal (National Day) in 2000, and May Day Model
Partnership Award 2015. He was recently awarded NHG Teaching Award for Nursing
Preceptors- Award Winner 2016. Was the Head of Community Psychiatric Nursing and
was actively involved in the revamping Community Mental Health team.
Choo Su Pin

Dr Choo is a Senior Consultant and Chief of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Department in
the Division of Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS). She is
also the Chair of the Clinical Trials Steering Committee at NCCS and Adjunct Principal
Investigator at the Singhealth Investigational Medicine Unit. She holds the position of
Adjunct Associate Professor, Singhealth Duke-NUS Oncology Academic Clinic Programme,
Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore and Adjunct Assistant Professor,
Department of Medicine, Yong Loo Lin Medical School, National University of Singapore.
Dr Choo received her Medical Degree from the University of Nottingham in the United
Kingdom. She trained in Gastrointestinal Oncology at NCCS and completed a one year
fellowship at UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr Choo’s primary specialty is in medical oncology, with sub-specialties in colorectal,
hepato-pancreato-biliary, upper gastrointestinal, and peritoneal-based malignancies.
Areas of particular interest include hepatobiliary cancers and early phase trials, as well as
emerging research in immuno-oncology approaches in hepato-biliary cancers.
Esther Lim

Esther joined SGH in 1995. She is a registered social worker and family therapist.
Esther was Head of Medical Social Services from 2009 to 2016. During her term, Esther
steers the professional development of medical social workers (MSWs) in the areas of
administration, clinical, research and education. In her current appointment with the
Regional Health System, she is part of the strategic planning management team to develop
community partnerships and new care integration initiatives. She leads a team to champion
the adaptation of Esther Network in Singapore to promote person-centred care.
At the national level, she partners MOH and IHiS to co-lead a cross-cluster workgroup to
streamline financial application and case management processes. Since 2013, Esther has
been the chairperson of the Chief MSW Healthcare Group, formed by Chief MSWs of
Public Health Institutions (PHIs) to advance the profession, improve care delivery and
build durable networks.
In the education arena, Esther is a consultant trainer with ASIST (Applied Suicide
Intervention Skills Training) and a crisis trainer with ICISF (International Critical Incident
Stress Foundation). Her research areas include patients’ experience with clinical care,
determinants of financial applications and patients’ hopes in integrated care.
For her contributions, Esther was the recipient of the National Day Award –
Commendation Medal in 2013. She was also conferred the Outstanding Social Worker
Award for achievements in social work leadership and management in 2012.

Koh Hong Yi

Brenda Lim

Ms Brenda Lim graduated as a registered nurse in 1985, and completed her post basic
training in paediatric and neonatal nursing in 1992, and diabetes care in 1998. In 2013
Ms Lim completed master of nursing in management at La Trobe University and clinical
dermatology nursing attachments under the HMDP grants at Guy’s and St. Thomas’
Hospital and Liverpool Hospital in London, Dermatology Treatment Centre in Yorkshire
and Dundee Hospital in Scotland , and recent team-based dermatology nursing at Bristol
Community Service.
Ms Lim is presently Head of Nursing at National Skin Centre, and under NHG, she is
appointed as Clinical Board Members, Assessor of NHG Standards and Accreditation
Resource Unit (SARU), faculty member of Clinical Instructor Course, Pre-Professional
Committee, and LKC School of Medicine Multiple Mini Interviewer. Ms Lim serves as a
chair in Dermatology Nurses Association under Singapore Nurses Association and a vice
president for special projects under Association of Diabetes Educators of Singapore
(ADES) after served as President of ADES for the past 10 years.
In 2016, Ms Lim was awarded Long Service Medal under the National Day Award for her
dedicated service in healthcare. In 2013, she received the NHG Excellence in Action
Awards for Leadership Award in recognition for her leadership in administration of

Dr Tan did his training in interventional nephrology in Massachusetts General Hospital.
Upon his return, he set up the multi-disciplinary interventional nephrology suite in
Singapore General Hospital. The interventional nephrology service is led by APN Michelle
Ng.
Dr Tan has a special interest in endovascular therapies for maintenance of hemodialysis
vascular accesses. His recent research evaluated the use of colour digital subtraction
angiography for dialysis access intervention and the use of drug eluting balloons to
improve the patency of dialysis accesses. He is the PI of the National Kidney Foundation
grant to develop stents for dialysis access and has published papers and book chapters in
the field.
Tan Chun Ju

I started my career as Physiotherapist in April 2009 after graduating from Nanyang
Polytechnic with a Diploma in Physiotherapy. I was given the opportunity to explore the
various specialties of physiotherapy – rotating around wards that cared for patients with
acute medical issues, post-surgery, burns and trauma. During this period, I completed my
degree (conversion) with Queen Margaret University (Edinburgh, Scotland) and started
supervising undergraduate students during their clinical placement. After deciding my
area of specialisation, I went on to complete the advanced certification in
cardiopulmonary physiotherapy and my Masters in Respiratory Physiotherapy with
Trinity College Dublin. I have a special interest in the management of surgical oncology
and trauma patients – providing the necessary rehabilitation to get them on their feet
and get moving.
Benita Tan

Dr Benita Tan is a senior consultant in the Singhealth Duke-NUS Breast Centre practicing
in Singapore General Hospital and National Cancer Centre, Singapore. Her clinical
practice is largely on breast diseases, managing a range of benign and malignant breast
diseases. She performs wide range of breast procedures including breast biopsies
including vacuum assisted biopsies (VAB) and breast cancer surgeries, from breast
conserving cancer surgery, including oncoplastic techniques, to mastectomies including
skin-sparing surgery for breast reconstruction.
Dr Tan enjoys teaching and mentorship and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Yong Loo
Lin School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. She is also a Clinical
Physician Faculty for the SingHealth General Surgery and Family Medicine Residency
Programmes, the Assistant Programme Director (General Surgery) for Transitional Year
Residency Programme and teaches in the Resident Nursing Training Programme.
Dr Tan has an interest is in breast cancer research, a strong believer of collaborative
efforts, with joint projects with local partners from Singhealth Research, Genomic
Institute of Singapore, Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology and the other local
hospitals; as well as internationally with the Karolinska Institutet, Universiti Malaya, Sun
Yat-Sen Cancer Center and the Cancer Genome Project in Wellcome Trust Sanger

Ng Gaik Nai

Gaik Nai is currently the Chief Nurse of KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH). She
also holds the portfolio as Deputy Group Chief Nurse, SingHealth Group Nursing. She
graduated as Registered Nurse in 1986 and subsequently obtained post-basic in Critical
Care and Master's degree in Health Services Management in 2004.
In 2012, she was awarded with 6 week HMDP scholarship attachment with University of
California Irvine Medical Center and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital to study
the development of Nursing Informatics. She is currently the chairman of Nursing
Informatics Chapter under Singapore Nursing Association. Her contributions toward the
field of Nursing Informatics include the development of Nursing Informatics Unit in KKH,
successful implementation of Closed-Loop Medication Management (CLMM),
Knowledge-Based Medication Administration and electronic nurse-charting.
She served in several committees at SingHealth and hospital level which include Chair for
College in Clinical Nursing, Chair for SingHealth Nurses Uniform Committee, Co-Chair for
SingHealth Nursing-HR Taskforce and IT and Data Committee in KKH. She has been
leading and participating in the development of Paediatric Resident Nurse Programme

Gaik Nai received several awards which include Singapore Model Healthcare Worker,
Excellence Service Star Award, National Day Efficiency Medal and National Day
Commendation Award.
Chia Yen-Yen

Dr Chia Yen Yen is the Deputy Director in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital,
overseeing Nursing Education and Research. She joined the hospital more than 20 years
ago, one year before the new hospital came into operation in 1997. In 2000, she joined
the Nurses Development Unit as a Nurse Educator. In 2011, she assumed her current
position and took on the dual portfolio. Dr Chia obtained her Bachelor of Nursing Studies
with honours from the University of Surrey, England in 1992; Masters of Evidence-based
Healthcare from Oxford University, England in 2004; and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing
from the University of Sydney, Australia in 2009. She also has a Graduate Diploma in
Training and Education from the Civil Service College obtained in 1997, and the Advanced
Diploma in Nursing (Paediatrics) in 1999 from Nanyang Polytechnic. Dr Chia received the
2012 SingHealth-Duke NUS Golden Apples Award for Outstanding Creative Educator
(Nursing Category); 2005 National Day Efficiency Medal; and 2003 Ministry of Health
Nurses Merit Award. In her capacity as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator
respectively, she is a recipient of research grants from the KKH Health Endowment Fund
and the Singapore Cancer Society Research Grant 2015.
Karen Koh

Karen graduated with Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) from University of Manchester. She
became interested in intensive nursing care and further pursued Masters in Nursing at
University of Pennsylvania (Acute Care Nursing Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist).
She is one of the pioneer APNs in Singapore to be certified in 2007. She is active in the
development of APNs both in National University Hospital and nationally. She is heavily
involved in enhancement of internship process for APN interns and is the chairperson for
the APN exam committee. She is also a board member of Singapore Nursing Board.
