11/19/12 Ancient Mesopotamia 1. What is the "fertile crescent"? The Fertile Crescent is a land region that Ancient Mesopotamia is in. 2. What modern countries are included in the Fertile Crescent? The modern countries in the Fertile Crescent are Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus, Jordan, Palestine, Kuwait, The Sinai Peninsula, and Northern Mesopotamia. 3. Where was ancient Mesopotamia located? Ancient Mesopotamia was located in Southern Iraq. 4. Define the word "Mesopotamia". In Greek the word Mesopotamia means “the land between two rivers.” 5. Why might someone want to live in Mesopotamia? People would want to live in Mesopotamia because in Northern Mesopotamia the land is fertile and there is plenty of rain. In Southern Mesopotamia the land is flat and it can get hot. There is not that much rain. 6. How did people survive so well there? People survived well because people settled down between two rivers. That gave plenty of natural vegetation and wildlife. The rivers provided fresh drinking water and a place to bathe. Then they invented a system of irrigation and began to farm. 9. What is the main idea of "The Story of Gilgamesh"? The main idea of The Story of Gilgamesh is that Gilgamesh and his friend Enkidu set off to the forest for cedar wood and then a powerful demon stood in their way but Gilgamesh killed the demon and brought back the cedar wood
