Abnormal Psychology Presentation
This assignment is designed to prepare you for your upcoming IB exam. By
becoming an expert on a specific disorder, you will be able to address many
of the questions (learning outcomes: see below). Note that you may be
asked to address 2 disorders in an IB exam question, so watching and
preparing for others’ presentations is extremely important as well. Your ppt.
presentation will be focusing on diagnosing, explaining and treating human
suffering from the psychological disorder of your choice. Although there are
numerous psychological disorders, this presentation focuses on the following
three groups of disorders as found in your text:
• anxiety (for example, OCD, agoraphobia)
• affective (for example, depression)
• eating (for example, bulimia).
Instructions for your Powerpoint…
1.
Your ppt. must be 15-20 minutes long. Although it is recommended
that you include a video, it will not be included in the time frame. Your
ppt. should contain visuals and very specific content.
2.
Begin your presentation with a case study of an individual who is
suffering from your disorder.
3.
Symptoms and Prevalence: ABCS (symptoms) and % of individuals in
a population who are affected. Any culture and gender variation?
4.
Assumptions: Explain the assumptions behind your disorder in terms
of bio, cognitive, and/or sociocultural factors.
5.
Causes: Analyze in terms of bio, cognitive and/or sociocultural factors
6.
Treatment: Describe and evaluate the various therapeutic approaches
to treating disorders which may be broadly organized into three
groups:
• biomedical therapies (e.g. drug therapy)
• individual psychological therapies (e.g. systematic desensitization,
cognitive restructuring therapy)
• group psychological therapies (e.g. encounter groups, family therapy,
community-based therapy).
Note that therapies from each of these approaches involve the use of specific
techniques that need to be applied appropriately. These approaches should
reflect a considerable degree of efficacy and ethical appropriateness to the
specific disorder.
a) Do they work? Which one is most effective and on whom?
b) Is it accessible by everyone? Is it effective on everyone?
c) Ethical issues?
7.
Discuss the relationship between etiology and therapeutic approach in
relation to your disorder.
8.
