Algebra 1 Mathematics Vocabulary – Based on High School Mathematics Standards, August 2008, 0SPI approximate - To obtain a number close to an exact amount. arithmetic sequence - A set of numbers in which the difference between any two consecutive numbers is the same. binomial – A polynomial with two terms. completing the square - A method used to solve a quadratic equation when factoring is possible, but the factors are not immediately obvious. consecutive - In order, with none missing. constant - A quantity that always stays the same. correlation, negative - A relationship between two sets of numerical data in which one set generally increases as the other decreases. correlation, positive - Two sets of data where the numbers in one set tend to increase, then the numbers in the other set tend to increase. correlation, strong - A regular pattern emerges when looking for a relationship between two set of data. correlation, weak - No regular pattern emerges when looking for a relationship between two set of data. cube (exponent) - The third power. cube root - A number whose cube is equal to a given number. direct proportion/ directly proportional - Two quantities that always have the same ratio. In y=kx where k is a constant, y is directly proportional to x. direct variation - Direct proportion/ directly proportional. domain - In a function, f(x), the possible values for x in the given situation. exponential equation - The equation y=ax for a(greater than 0 but not equal to 1) and exponent, x. frequency - The number of times something occurs in an interval or set of data. geometric sequence - A sequence of terms in which each term is created by multiplying the previous term by a constant. intersection - To meet or cross. inverse proportion/ inversely proportional - Two variables whose products are always the same. xy=2 inverse variation - Where two variables are inversely proportional. line that fits the data - A line, segment, or ray drawn on a scatter plot to estimate the relationship between two sets of data. line, point-slope form - The equation of a line in the form y-y1=m(x-x1) where m represents the slope of the line and (x1 y1) is a known point on the line. line, slope-intercept form - y=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the yintercept. line, standard form - ax+bx+c = 0, where a, b, and c are integers and a > 0. monomial - the product of constants and variables (26r3s4). nonnegative - A number that is positive or zero. nonzero - Not zero, a number that is positive or negative. precision - An indication of how finely a measurement was made; related to the unit of measurement and the calibration of the tool. polynomial - The sum of monomials. quadrant - One of the four sections of a coordinate grid that are separated by axes. quadratic equation - A polynomial equation containing one or more terms in which the variable is raised to be the second power but no higher. quadratic formula - Formula used to solve any quadratic equation: If ax2 + bx + c = 0 and a = 0, then quadratic function - A function with a second degree variable. radical - A symbol that indicates the root to be taken ( ). range - The possible values for y in an equation. rate of change - The ratio of change in one quantity to the corresponding change in another quantity. real number - The combined set of the rational and irrational numbers. recursive (sequence, series) - Each term is determined by application of a formula to preceding terms. region- A part of plane. root - The inverse of a power (In ax=b, a is the xth root of b). sequence - An order set of objects or numbers. solution set - The set of values that make an equation or inequality true. square (exponent) - The second power. system - Two or more related linear equations (or inequalities) for which you seek a common solution. term - Parts of an expression or series separated by a plus or minus, or parts of a sequence when separated by commas. trinomial - A polynomial with three terms. valid - true variable, dependent - A variable thatdepends on one or more other variables. For equations such as y=3x-2, the dependent variable is y. variable, independent - A variable in an equation that may have its value freely chosen without considering values of any other variable.
