While many general dentists may be capable of providing orthodontic services, choosing an orthodontist to provide your orthodontic care ensures that you have a specialist giving you the best care possible. An average number of years to become an orthodontist is 10 to 11 years after high school graduation. That would be 4 years of undergraduate, 4 years of dental school and another 2 to 3 years of an ort h odo nt i c gr ad uat e program. It is difficult to gain acce pt anc e i nto an ort h odo nt i c gr ad uat e training program. Some dental schools will admit 40 to 50 students per year into dental school, whereas an orthodontic graduate a n O r t h o d o n t i s t ? program may only take 3 s t u d e n t s p e r year. Therefore the competition is high for each open slot. Because of all of this extensive education in orthodontics comes the most important benefit to treating patients: Expertise. You trust your heart to a cardiologist, your skin to a dermatologist, your knees to an orthopedist. Like these specialists who study their specialty areas after their general medical education, orthodontists devote additional years of study to orthodontics after they graduate from dental school. And like their medical counterparts, orthodontists limit their practices to their specialty area. Orthodontists have indepth experience in orthodontic care. They use their knowledge and advanced skills to help you get the best results possible. Your bite is a complex biologic system. Its components include up to 32 teeth, upper and lower jaws, gums and facial muscles. Your healthy bite is the orthodontist’s goal. The goal is met by making sure the separate elements are positioned for optimal performance so that you can enjoy the ability to bite, chew and speak well. You may see six crooked front teeth but an orthodontist sees the cause of crooked teeth in three dimensions. Orthodontists use their education, experience and expertise to delve deep to discover the root of your orthodontic problem. Armed with a diagnosis that takes all factors into account, orthodontists can plan your solution—one that delivers a healthy, attractive smile and a lasting result. P a g e Y a n g 2 O r t h o d o n t i c s Springtime with Braces Spring and summer months bring an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of kids damaging their faces, mouths or pearly whites. involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. YANG’S BRACES-FRIENDLY RECIPE CORNER SOFT CREPES We can’t think of a better pair than seasonal fruits and the soft, warm goodness of crepes. If you’ve never tried crepes before, there is no better time than the present! INGREDIENTS 4 EGGS 1 CUP MILK 1 CUP WATER 2 CUPS ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR 1/2 TEASPOOON SALT If you feel adventurous, try adding your favorite jelly, 1/4 CUP BUTTER, MELTED spread or Nutella for an extra dash of deliciousness! Or, you can also try savory crepes by adding soft cheeses, thinly sliced meats and cooked vegetables. DIRECTIONS In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk and water until frothy. Slowly stir in flour and salt, then beat in the butter until batter is very smooth. Heat a lightly oiled 7-inch frying pan at just above medium heat. Scoop about 1/4 cup of batter onto the pan. Swirl the batter immediately to coat the bottom of the pan. Cook the crepe for one-and-a-half minutes, then carefully flip it and cook the other side for one minute. You may need to turn the heat down a little after the first few crepes are done. You can stack them or roll them individually, too. Makes about 16 crepes. Have fun and bon appétit! S p o t l i g h t : We are very excited to introduce our wonderful patient, Robert, who recently got his braces off! What would you say to someone who is hesitant to get braces? If you’re hesitant to get braces I would say just do it, because a couple years of not smiling is worth the many years that you will boast your corrected smile. Robert is well-known around our office for being an exceptional patient and lots of fun to be around. We always look forward to seeing him because he manages to make us smile every time with his funny stories and jokes. Also, we want to be sure to mention that it was Robert’s brilliant suggestion to create this section which features our wonderful patients! Thank you, Robert! Robert was nice enough to share some of his thoughts about braces with us: What is the first thing you did when you got your braces off? The first thing I did after getting the metal out of my mouth was tooth whitening. R o b e r t How will you look back on your experience with having braces? I suppose I won't look back at the years that I had braces because the metal seemed to interfere with my long term memory capabilities. :) CONGRATULATIONS, ROBERT! What advice do you have for other people who are currently in braces? For people currently in braces I would just say to wear your rubber bands to speed up the process and don't eat apples. Are you glad you had braces? I'm glad I had braces because… even your smile can affect your outcome in a job interview. What did you like best about being treated at Yang Orthodontics? My favorite thing about being treated at Yang Orthodontics was the amiable receptionist.
