Before going into battle Emperor Constantine said a prayer to God for protection. Although the Roman Empire covered much land, most of the people could be found near the major cities. In Greece the Olympics were so important that major wars stopped to make time for the games. Slaves could be found in Greece, Rome and Egypt. The ancient Egyptians use hieroglyphics to tell stories of past leaders, as well as recording the flood patterns of the Nile River. Hammurabi was a Babylonian leader who wrote down the laws in order to create order in his society. Alexander the Great would wear the clothes of people that he conquered to make them think that he was one of them and not an enemy. Ancient Athens created the world's first democracy, where the people had a say in how the government was run. Mesopotamia and Egypt both had scribes whose only job was to write down events that happened during an emperor's rule. The geography of Greece made it very easy to grow many grapes and olives. Most of the people in Mesopotamia stayed in close distance to the rivers. Most of the territory over which the Egyptians ruled was desert, so most people lived near the major cities. The Egyptians had many gods who were responsible for ruling over different parts of the world. The Egyptian pharaohs were buried in tombs with their riches, their pets and sometimes even their slaves. The people of Mesopotamia were able to produce surplus crops by using irrigation systems. The Laws of the Twelve Tables were established so that all people would know what the rules of Rome were. The land that the Ancient Greeks occupied was very mountainous, so most people lived near the major city-states. In Ancient Egypt, the pharaoh was thought to be the son of a god. The mountains in Greece isolated the individual citystates, which often lead to wars. Even though Ancient Greece was a democracy, there were still rich and poor people, as well as slaves.
