Made famous by Darwin’s Voyage of the Beagle of 1831 onwards, the Galapagos
Islandsarecollectively,agiantNationalParkandaUNESCOandWorldHeritageSite.
ThewordGalapagosisnamedaftera‘gianttortoise’andrelatestotheProvinceof
GalapagosintheArchipelago,WestofEcuadorandinthePacificOcean,comprising
18majorislands.
Biologically unique as a confluence of currents, the islands are renowned for their
diversemarineecosystem,tamewildlifeandabundanceofit,albeithighlyprotected.
Marineandlandiguanaspatroltheshores,alongwiththeSallyLightfootCraband
otherendemicorindigenousspecies;notablytheGiantTortoise,whichiscommonly
knowntostoptrafficwhilstcrossingthe‘road’.AricharrayofSharkspeciesinhabit
theshallows,hiddenwithinthelowlevelmangroves.Overheadtheskyisinvariably
bedeckedwithnumerousunusualseabirds,suchasthevocalWavedAlbatross,neoPrehistoric Magnificent Frigate Bird, and comical Blue Footed Booby and Brown
Noddy.
