Royal Decree
The Institute of Applied Technology was founded in
2005 through a Royal decree of His Highness Sheikh
Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United
Arab Emirates, as a corporate body with full financial
and administrative independence.
The establishment of the Institute was an initiative
of General Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan,
Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. His Highness envisioned
IAT as a world class Technical-Careers Education
system that would produce the scientists, engineers
and technicians needed by the UAE to build a
knowledge-based economy.

Message from the Managing Director
Fatima College of Health Sciences (FCHS) is an educational entity
governed by the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT). Founded in
2006, FCHS has become established as a leading health education
provider in the UAE.
The College has a number of valuable international agreements to
ensure the quality of its educational programs. Moreover, the programs
offered by FCHS are accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and
Scientific Research.
IAT educational system is mandated to develop the knowledge and
skills that will help the workforce become more flexible and responsive
to the needs of local workforce markets, while enabling the UAE
economy to compete globally. IAT's additional contractual obligation is
to young Emiratis, every student attending our learning campuses will
be afforded the opportunity to prepare for their future career by
participating in a personalized work-integrated learning process and
programs that are student-centered, surrounded by supportive
services, and is driven by intellectual rigor.
As the Institute of Applied Technology continues to grow the UAE’s

An entity of the Institute of Applied Technology
Established in 2006, the Fatima College of Health Sciences (FCHS) aims
to meet the United Arab Emirates growing need for skilled healthcare
professionals. The college started by offering the BSc. in Nursing
program in 2006 and has, since then expanded to offer more than 10
degree programs at BSc. and Diploma levels in Health Sciences. The
nursing program is operated in collaboration with Griffith University in
Australia.
In addition to the Bachelor Degree, the school of nursing offers a
bridging program for diploma-holding practitioner nurses. The
program was designed to graduate local students in the nursing field
and to upgrade the education of the diploma holder nurses already in
the health sector.
The college has a mandate to help the health sector in Abu Dhabi and
UAE in general to satisfy its needs by graduating well educated and
trained nurses.

Accrediting Body & Partners
The health professions are occupations that work together as a team with
physicians, dentists or primary health care specialists to deliver quality health care.
Based on the demand for such specialties in the UAE, and in order to strengthen
the newly launched Health Sciences Programs (BSc. & Diploma in, Pharmacy,
Physiotherapy, Radiography & Medical Imaging and Health Emergency
(Paramedic). FCHS has signed an agreement with Monash University that aims to
establish, develop and deliver first class, innovative Health Sciences Programs in
FCHS which will be sanctioned by local and international agencies to grant
globally recognized graduate degree programs in health sciences, focusing on
higher diplomas and bachelor degrees. Graduates from these programs are
eligible for licensing by Health Authority Abu Dhabi.
The Health Sciences programs prepare graduates with the knowledge, skills, and
values to advance in the health profession; to meet the health care delivery
demands and work in a variety of settings with diverse patients, families and
communities.
Graduates are prepared to assume supervisory, managerial and/or educational
positions. In addition, successful completions of these programs allow students to
pursue graduate education in the health care field.

Why study at FCHS?
Fatima College of Health Sciences offers different Health Sciences Programs in two main campuses
Abu Dhabi and Al Ain with the intention of expanding to Al Gharbia campus. Currently there are
approximately 600 students enrolled in these programs taught by more than 30 faculty members.

Careers in Health Care
Nursing
Nurses graduating with a BSc in Nursing will provide holistic, nursing and practice to patients and
their families. Contemporary nursing careers offer a wealth of opportunities to contribute to the
health and wellbeing of society in primary, secondary and tertiary settings.
Pharmacy
Pharmacists are healthcare professionals who practice pharmacy, the field of health sciences
focusing on the effect of medications and their safe use. Pharmacists undergo college-level
education to understand biochemical mechanisms of action of drugs, drug uses and therapeutic
roles, side effects, potential interactions, and monitoring parameters. Professional interpretation
and communication of this specialized knowledge to patients, physicians, and other health care
providers are functions which pharmacists provide, and are central to the provision of safe and
effective drug therapy.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy or Physical Therapy, often abbreviated PT, is a health care profession. Physical
therapy is concerned with identifying and maximizing quality of life and movement potential
within the spheres of promotion, prevention, diagnosis, treatment/intervention, and rehabilitation.
This encompasses physical, psychological, emotional, and social wellbeing.

Radiography & Medical Imaging
A Radiographer & Radiologic Technologist, also known as Medical Imaging Specialist (MIS),
performs imaging of the human body for diagnosis medical problems. Radiographers work in
hospitals, clinics, and private practice. Although many graduates pursue a career in general
radiography and computed tomography, opportunities exist to specialize in ultrasound, magnetic
resonance imaging, mammography, management, research and in industry as medical
applications' specialists.
Health Emergency (Paramedic)
Paramedics are an integral part of the health care system. They provide unscheduled health care
for individuals experiencing a health emergency. Paramedics initiate care and determine
appropriate referral of patients to enable continuing care needs. A paramedic is also required to
work with other emergency services to respond to mass casualty incidents in a range of situations.
Medical Services
Graduates from the “Medical Services” Programs are prepared to work in a range of occupational
fields in the medical and health care sector. Graduates work in hospitals, clinics, health centers and
other institutions providing medical care. In addition, they work in healthcare related institutions
and organizations.

Nursing Program
This is a full time 4 year program that leads to the award of Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The
Program comprises theoretical and clinical courses in addition to clinical placements within a
variety of health care settings.
Nursing Bridging Program
This program is available to nurses who hold a Diploma in Nursing. This “Bridging” program is
offered full-time (2 years) and part-time (4 years).
The nursing degree has main areas of study including;

Bachelor of Pharmacy
Pharmacists are health professionals with the skills and knowledge to manage a patient's
understanding and utilisation of medications, in order to optimise medicines-related health
outcomes. The degree has four streams of study:
• enabling sciences
• applied pharmaceutical sciences
• clinical and therapeutic sciences
• pharmacy practice sciences
During third and fourth year, students undertake work placements in hospitals and community
pharmacies through the professional experience placement program. The program provides an
understanding of the processes involved in, for example, providing primary health care, drug
information, and clinical pharmacy services in different practice environments.
Major areas of study
• Enabling knowledge: includes various aspects of chemistry, physiology, biochemistry,
microbiology and pharmacology.
• Drug delivery: focuses on formulation of medicines, pharmacokinetics and various dose-forms.
• Integrated therapeutics stream: deals with major disease states, epidemiology, their diagnosis,
the chemistry and pharmacology of medicines used to treat these conditions and the clinical
practice aspects of treating the whole patient.
• Pharmacy Practice: the clinical application of the science outlined above and includes
experiential placements

Bachelor of Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists are health care professionals who focus on prevention, assessment and treatment
of physical disorders and the promotion of movement and health.
The degree has five themes of study:
• Personal and professional development
• Population, society and health
• Fundamental knowledge of health science
• Applied practice & Research
The Physiotherapy Degree is based on a fully integrated curriculum and includes interdisciplinary
studies. In Year 1, the curriculum is structured around patient centred learning. Conditions for
which people typically seek physiotherapy, provide the context for integrating learning about
biomedical sciences and physiotherapy skills. In the later years of the course, the focus moves from
campus based patient scenarios and observational visits, to learning in a clinical environment.
Graduates develop a skill set and are well-equipped to continue learning.

Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging
Radiographers are health professionals who work in collaboration with radiologists and other
specialist medical practitioners to provide patients with a range of diagnostic examinations.
Radiographers more specifically facilitate patient diagnosis and management through the creation
of medical images using a variety of medical imaging modalities including traditional x-ray
radiographic imaging; digital fluoroscopy and digital vascular imaging; computed tomography,
mammography, bone mineral densitometry, medical ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging.
Radiographers play a pivotal role in selecting and implementing the most appropriate examination
protocols which will answer the clinical questions.
This program provides a professional education in general radiography, computed tomography,
general medical ultrasound, digital vascular imaging and magnetic resonance imaging to facilitate
entry into the radiography profession. Throughout the course, the physical and biomedical
sciences are closely integrated with radiographic and medical imaging science and methods.
Students will develop an understanding of scientific research in general and its application within
radiographic practice. Under supervision, students will develop a range of professional skills in
relation to the assessment and management of patients and implement radiographic and medical
imaging techniques from an evidence based perspective. In final year, students will extend their
radiographic knowledge into magnetic resonance imaging, pediatric imaging, digital subtraction
angiography, functional imaging and bone mineral densitometry.

Bachelor of Emergency Health (Paramedic)
The Bachelor of Emergency Health (Paramedic) BEH(P) degree provides the graduate with the
practical skills and knowledge required of an Emergency Medical Technician Advanced
(Paramedic) at a beginning practitioner level.
The second year aims to provide students with the adequate preparatory coursework to enter the
professional phase of the Degree. All units in first year provide an introduction to the generic
competencies expected of university studies, eg. accessing information, critical analysis and essay
preparation, etc. In year one, students will also be introduced to biomedical sciences, social
sciences, human development and biological concepts that underpin clinical paramedic practice.
The third year is the first of the two-year professional phase. Students study concepts of
professionalism and core clinical skills, including clinical problem-solving and decision-making. In
this year students will begin to explore common emergency medical conditions and conditions
related to trauma.
In the fourth year students study the paramedic management of patients with conditions affecting
mental health and health conditions at various life stages. Students begin to explore the concepts
of leadership and clinical mentoring, research and evaluation, and the broader scope of emergency
preparedness and multi-casualty situations.
A Thematic Approach
There are five themes within the BEH(P) Degree which provide a continuity of approach across
units and serve to link these units to professional practice. They are the following:

Admission Requirements
Health Sciences Programs
1. A secondary high school certificate or its equivalent,
obtained within the last three years of the application
submission deadline, attested by Ministry of Education.
2. IAT secondary certificate or a high school with a
minimum percentage of 70%* for science stream; and
may consider high school certificates in other streams
with a minimum percentage of 80%**, for admission to
Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Physiotherapy,
Bachelor of Radiography & Medical Imaging, or Bachelor
of Emergency Health (Paramedic). Bachelor of Pharmacy
(Science stream 80%, other streams 85%) programs.
3. IELTS score > 5.0 (Academic) or equivalent; UAE national
applicants with a lower score may join the Foundation
Program.
4. Applicants should not be older than 23 years.
5. Medical Clearance is required for admission.
6. Females only.

• Nursing Diploma from an accredited institute.
• Academic IELTS with Band 6.0.
• Valid UAE Nursing licensure.
• Only UAE National students may transfer credits to
Fatima College.
