HEALTH ISSUES
Immunizations and PPD



Students must maintain immunizations, PPD testing, and other requirements as stipulated by
Student Employee Health. These requirements are risk management efforts to promote health
maintenance and prevent health problems. It provides protection for you and for the patients for
whom you care.
The student is required to submit a photocopy of his/her immunization record to the receptionist in
NU 122 before admission to the first semester nursing courses.
Failure to maintain these standards will result in your being check-listed by the University and
excluded from clinical practice by the School of Nursing and by hospital policy. Clinical facilities
may also have specific immunization requirements which must be met.
CPR Requirements for Students



Students are required to have completed CPR certification/recertification (American Heart
Association – Level C; or its equivalent) before admission to the first semester nursing courses.
Certification must remain current throughout enrollment and it is the student’s responsibility to
meet this requirement. If certification expires during a semester, it must be renewed prior to the
expiration date.
Failure to meet this requirement will result in the student’s lack of progression in or graduation
from the program.
PROCEDURE:
1. The student is required to submit a photocopy of his/her current CPR card to the receptionist in NU 122
before the first day of clinical in the first semester of the nursing major and immediately following
recertification during enrollment in the nursing major.
2. Names of students who are out of compliance with the guidelines will be submitted to course leaders at
the beginning of the semester. Those students will not be able to participate in clinical experiences until a
copy of a valid CPR card is given to the receptionist in NU 122.
3. This procedure only applies to IUPUI students, not IUPUI/C students.
Training in Standard Precautions (Universal Precautions)
TARGET GROUP: IUPUI School of Nursing full-time and part-time students admitted to a degree
program and planning to enroll in a clinical course.
OBJECTIVE: To ensure that universal precautions are observed in order to prevent contact with blood
or other potentially infectious materials.
3. POLICY: School of Nursing students who might be exposed to blood or other potentially
Infectious materials while enrolled in the School of Nursing will be trained in Standard Precautions at the
time they begin clinical or laboratory study, whichever is first, and at least annually thereafter. This
training must be in compliance with the OSHA Standard 29 CFR Part 1910.1030. And the Center for
Disease Control’s February, 1997, Guidelines for isolation precautions in hospitals. American Journal of

PROCEDURES: Students will be expected to complete the OSHA online training
CERTIFICATION: Verification of student compliance with this policy will be conducted by the Office of
Educational Services prior to the beginning of each semester or summer session.
