Download the Correct Version of Java for Microsoft Windows
UNT currently recommends Java version 6, Update 31 (JRE 1.6.0_31)
for Windows user with Blackboard.
For Mac users, the latest version of Java for Mac 10.5 & 10.6 are supported.
Test your Java to see what version of Java you are currently using
If you are at a computer that requires you to have "Administrator Rights" and you do not have
these rights, you can contact the network manager for your department and request that your
Java be made compatible with Vista. Click this link for a list of departmental network manage.
There have been numerous customers using Blackboard reporting issues when they have
multiple versions of Java installed on the same computer. For step-by-step instructions on how
to find out if you have multiple versions of Java installed and how to correct this problem,
follow the steps below. You may wish to download and print the Adobe pdf instructions so that
you can follow along:
Uninstalling Additional Versions of Java

Click on "Start" and then "Control Panel".
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
Locate all versions of Sun Java, JRE, or JVM
Click on each version of Java listed, one at a time. (see “Example of several versions of Java listed
under Add/Remove” below for an example of some of the versions you may see in your list).
5. Click "Remove" and follow the onscreen instructions to uninstall all versions of Java.
Installing the recommended version of Java - Java 1.6.0_31 for
Windows
1. Click on this link for Java 1.6 update .
2. Click on the JRE Download link under the Java SE 6 Update 31 section.
3. In order to download the free version you will need to click the radio button to the right of the
Accept License Agreement option.
4. Choose platform Windows (example: Windows x86 (32-bit) Online).
5. Click link to the right of Offline Installation or Online Installation to download installation file.
6. Save file to your computer.
7. Run the executable and install Java (example: jre-6u31-windows-i586-iftw.exe).
8. To test that Java is installed and working properly on your computer, run this test applet from the
Sun Java web site: Test your Java. This will prompt you to update your Java to the newest
version (currently Update 31) but it is important that you disregard the notice.
9. ***IMPORTANT*** In order for these steps to work correctly and address your problem, you will
need to make sure you have followed the previous step above (Uninstalling Additional Versions
of Java) and the step below to Disable Auto-Updates. If you have any questions or problems,
please contact the appropriate Blackboard Helpdesk.
Installing an older version of Java - Windows
1. Click on this link for Archive: Java[tm] Technology Products Download.
2. From the web browser page that opens, Archive: Java[tm] Technology Products Download,
go to the section under "Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE)". Click on the drop-down
arrow to the right of JDK/JRE - 6 and choose to download Java "6 Update 24" or "6 Update 31"
and then click the "Go" button.
3. Click on the Download JRE link
4. Choose the Platform (e.g. Windows) from the drop-down list, click on the check box next to I
agree to accept the license agreement and click Continue
5. Select the appropriate download for Windows. Pick either Windows Offline Installation or
Windows Online Installation) and choose to Save File.
6. To test that Java is installed and working properly on your computer, run this test applet from the
Sun Java web site: Test your Java. This will prompt you to update your Java to the newest
version (currently Update 31) but it is important that you disregard the notice.
7. ***IMPORTANT*** In order for these steps to work correctly and address your problem, you will
need to make sure you have followed the previous step above (Uninstalling Additional Versions
of Java) and the step below to Disable Auto-Updates. If you have any questions or problems,

Installing Java for Mac 10.5 and 10.6
For Mac users, the latest version of Java for Mac is supported. Since Java is part of the Mac's operating
system, you should not need to update this unless you have updates turned off.
Disabling Auto-Update
To ensure that you continue to run 1.6.0_31 for Blackboard Vista, it is important to disable automatic
Java updates.
1. After your computer comes back up click on “Start” and then “Control Panel”.
2. Double click on the “Java” icon.
3. Click on the “Update” tab and uncheck the “Check for Updates Automatically” to disable the
Auto-Update feature and then click “Apply” button and close. This step is very important.
To check and see which version of Java you currently have installed on your PC, following steps 1
through 3 below to check your computer. You can also go to this external link at Oracle's site to Test
your Java to see what version of Java you are currently using.
1. Click on “Start”, then “Control Panel”
2. Double click on the “Java” icon if you already have Java installed.
3. Click on the “About” tab and look for the “Version” number like “1.6.0_31”.
