The five themes of ancient
civilizations

Sumer /
Mesopotamia
Location
 The absolute location of their capital of ur
was 31˚N and 48˚E
 It was between the Tigris and Euphrates
river because of this it was given the name
the land between to rivers
Human environment
interaction
 For this very old civilization the physical
characteristics are the Tigris and Euphrates rivers
 The growing seasons for Sumer / Mesopotamia
where the growing season and planting season and
the seasons where very hot
 As a result of this extreme hotness they whore lots
of clothing that was very light.
Economics / Movement
 The goods and products where all produced by
hand
 A big good that as produced was corn and another
was grain
 The goods where exchanged by boat and by cart
 They did not use money they had just used trading
Political Science /
Government
 They where governed by military leaders
 There leaders where only temporary leader
during times of war until the fighting
stopped then they had became king
 Their leaders where the military chiefs
during the time of war
 They did have laws however they followed
the laws of Hammarabies code
Knowledge, Education and
The Arts
 We know early on they used pictures to
communicate for trade but later on they
started to use cuneiform
 What we could learn from there printing,
sculptures ect… is how they where
compared to other civilizations
Religion and Philosophy
 They had believed that there was a god for
pretty much everything
 They also thought if they would bring
offerings to these certain “gods” it will keep
away bad things such as illnesses
 They would also pray and attend religious
ceremonies a lot
Sociology
 They almost always lived in families but when the kids got
older they would have to take care of their parents and still
listen to them as well
 They would have slaves and if you where a slave it would
be very hard to get out of slavery
 Many times there where divisions between social classes
the lowest class (slaves) would probably interact with
people around their class such as farmers
 Their daily live included mostly working and worshiping
their gods
Ancient Egypt
Location
 Their capital Cairo was 30˙E and 30˙N
 Upper Egypt was just north of Nubia and
also upper Egypt was right next to the
Arabian desert

Human Environment Interaction
 The physical characteristics for Ancient
Egypt was it was mostly all desert but they
also had the Nile cataracts and oasis's
 The biggest natural resources was the Nile
 During the growing season the Nile was at
high tide and as always it is very hot
 To adapt to this hot climate they would wear
many layers of light clothing
Economics/ Movement
 Their goods where hand made
 The goods that where produced where gold
and also cotton
 In Ancient Egypt they did not use money
they had only used trade
 They where transported by he Nile which
means they where often transported by boat
Political Science/ Government
 They where governed by the pharaohs in
Ancient Egypt
 Their leaders are of course the pharaohs and
officials
 The pharaohs where selected by royal blood
only
 In Ancient Egypt there where also laws
Knowledge Education and the
Arts
 They had a writing system all their own call
hieroglyphs
 From their music arts printing ect… we can
learn about their culture and their jobs and
many other things
Religion and Philosophy
 They had believed that their was more than one
god and their was a god for almost everything
 They would believe that if you did good deeds on
earth when you would die your heart will be as
light as a feather and you will go to back to earth
and live in the after life forever but if you did bad
things then your heart would be heavier than a
feather and you would go to the underworld
 This affected their daily life very much because as
a result everything they did involved there gods
Sociology
 In Egypt they did often live in family's
 There where also slaves that the family’s
had owned
 There are divisions between social classes
and as well
 Their daily lives mostly consisted of
working and worshiping their gods
Israelites
Location
 The absolute location for their capital
Jerusalem is 32˙N and 35˙E
 It borders the Mediterranean sea
 Inside it it holds the Dead Sea

Interaction
 The characteristics for the Israelites where
where fertile plains, grassy slopes, rock hills
and desserts
 The natural resources where the Jordan
river and the Dead Sea
 Their growing seasons where very hot
 They wore many layers of light clothing
Economics / Movement
 They mostly traded for their things besides
farming so by hand
 The goods they produced where goats sheep and
cattle
 They had lived in a trading place so they did not
have to transport their goods
 They did not use money they only used trading
 They where transported by foot

 They where governed by kings and the ten
commandments
 Their leader where their kings and Moses
 They selected kings by bloodline
 The laws they had where the ten
commandments
Knowledge, Education and the
Arts
 From them we get monotheism
 What we can learn from their printing ect…
is about their religion

 They believed in one all powerful god
 They believed in the ten commandments
 Their belief made them travel a lot
Sociology
 They lived in families
 They did not have slaves
 Yes their where divisions between their
classes
 Their daily lives consisted mostly of
worshiping god
