Proposition 11.10. A mapping f : X → Y between topological spaces
(X , T ) and (Y , S) is continuous if and only if for any subset O ∈ S, its
inverse image under f , f −1 (O) ∈ T .
Proof. Suppose f is continuous. Let O ∈ S. By Proposition 11.1, to
show that f −1 (O) is open it suffices to show that each point in f −1 (O)
has a neighborhood that is contained in f −1 (O). Let x ∈ f −1 (O).

Proof. Suppose f is continuous. Let O ∈ S. By Proposition 11.1, to
show that f −1 (O) is open it suffices to show that each point in f −1 (O)
